Foto: Retama… tras el incendio vuelve a brotar con más fuerza y aprovecha la luz y los nutrientes del terreno para florecer de nuevo y crear vida y belleza.
Cuando captamos imágenes entregamos nuestra mirada, nuestro tiempo y también dejamos ver parte de nosotros mismos. Por momentos viajamos, iniciamos una pequeña aventura de la mente, compartimos la emoción del que intenta aprehender la belleza que se escapa y que casi nos supera.
Somos espíritus quijotescos luchando con las agujas del tiempo, intentando apoderarnos de la fugaz memoria, intentando parar los minutos que lo transforman todo.
Por momentos somos pintores intentando retener la luz que se amontona caprichosamente aquí y allí, en la piel de las cosas.
Regalamos fotos y una parte nuestra vibra como una cuerda pulsada al aire, mientras se queda dentro un eco que pone música de fondo a estos días en que, de lo contrario, resonaría martilleante el miedo de lo que no se ve.

When we capture images we give our gaze, our time, we also let see part of ourselves. At times we travel, we begin a small adventure of the mind, we share the emotion of one who tries to apprehend the beauty that escapes and that almost surpasses us.
We are quixotic spirits fighting with the needles of time, trying to seize the expired memory, trying to stop the minutes that transform everything.
At times we are painters trying to retain the light that capriciously accumulates here and there, on the skin of things.

La morena gigante es una anguila grande, que alcanza hasta 3 m de largo y 30 kg de peso. Su cuerpo alargado es de color marrón. Mientras que los juveniles son de color canela con grandes manchas negras, los adultos tienen manchas negras que se transforman en manchas parecidas a las de un leopardo detrás de la cabeza.
La morena gigante es carnívora y nocturna, cazando a sus presas dentro del arrecife. Se sabe que participa en la caza cooperativa con el mero coralino errante (Plectropomus pessuliferus). Estas dos especies de peces son cazadores complementarios: mientras la anguila caza en el arrecife, puede asustar a sus presas y sacarlas de sus escondites, dejándolas para que el mero se las coma. These transform unexpectedly as the visitor walks through and around them, creating a dizzying and unforgettable sense of space in motion. The entire gallery is part of the sculptural field: as with his other multi-piece sculptures, the artist purposefully arranges the works to move the viewer through them and the space around them. Esta es la más conocida de las muchas especies y géneros de mariposas llamadas "de alas de cristal", agrupadas en la tribu Ithomiini, caracterizadas por sus alas largas y estrechas y por presentar grandes áreas de las alas carentes de escamas, y por tanto transparentes en mayor o menor grado. Esta especie de "mariposa de cristal" mide de cinco y medio a seis centímetros de envergadura alar. Ambos pares de alas son transparentes iridescentes, salvo un borde castaño rojizo, y una banda del mismo color que penetra en la parte apical de la celda discal del ala anterior, entre esta banda y el borde castaño del ápice hay una gran banda diagonal de color blanco. El reverso es idéntico al anverso aunque con las bandas castañas más anaranjadas. El cuerpo, muy esbelto, es pardo negruzco con bandas color crema en el tórax, con patas y antenas negras muy largas y finas. La oruga es glabra, cilíndrica, sin protuberancias, de color verde pastel con una hilera de manchas amarillo anaranjado en cada flanco y sobre ella otra hilera similar de manchas de color verde casi negro, la cápsula cefálica es verde con dos grandes manchas negras. La crisálida es de color verde claro con un brillo gelatinoso, y tiene una forma muy peculiar, con la cara ventral extremadamente abombada.
Se distribuye por el noroeste de Sudamérica, América Central y el sur de México, y en el norte de su área de distribución es una especie marcadamente migratoria que puede recorrer hasta doce kilómetros al día. Habita en las junglas tropicales lluviosas. Los imagos liban el néctar de todo tipo de flores y suelen posarse casi siempre con las alas cerradas. Las orugas se alimentan de solanáceas, especialmente de Cestrum sp y Solanum sp, cuyas toxinas son aprovechadas por la oruga que se vuelve así venenosa para sus posibles depredadores. Los imagos también son venenosos, pero no por las toxinas acumuladas en la dieta larvaria, sino por las que son absorbidas con el néctar de ciertas flores y en los excrementos de aves. Los machos transforman estas toxinas en feromonas para atraer a las hembras. Algo muy inusual entre los insectos, los machos atraen a las hembras de forma cooperativa formando leks, en los que los machos se agrupan densamente para hacerse más fácilmente detectables para las hembras, y ellas pueden elegir a los mejores machos sin esfuerzo. Es una especie frecuente en cautividad en los mariposarios.

Esta iglesia de El Salvador, cercana al Acueducto, solo conserva del arte románico el atrio del siglo XII.
Su origen es mozárabe, consta de una sola nave y contiene una torre con campanario de diversos estilos artísticos.
Diversas reformas a lo largo de los siglos transforman su estado original, conservando en su interior una bella pila bautismal en estilo gótico; conteniendo decorados barrocos en toda la ornamentación.

Cala Galdana se encuentra dividida en su parte derecha según su orientación al mar, por un pequeño istmo, cuyo final adentrándose en el agua desde su hermosa bahía, es este enorme peñasco.
Un lugar maravilloso y característico que pese a su alta ocupación veraniega, lo transforman en la cala más visitada de Menorca

El pintor y escultor Jean Dubuffet, representante fundamental de las búsquedas "matemáticas" posteriores a la segunda guerra mundial y teórico del art brut, crea una obra inclasificable. Con su serie "legendes", de la que forma parte "La gigue irlandaise", el artista amplia a los personajes el tratamiento que hasta entonces reservaba a los objetos: la reducción a "una especie de magma multicolor" (Dubuffet). Aquí las figuras se transforman en una serie de alvéolos coloreados, presa de un temblor generalizado que hace pensar en una danza endiablada. Before posting more detailed impressions on the results of using the FaceApp to enhance and modify your face, I am sharing the very first filter that we can apply. When you upload a photo to the app, it spends a few seconds identifying faces. If it finds a single face, it proceeds to open the image and it the is more than one it will let you select the face you want to work with. Once a face is opened, the initial screen is displayed (image on the left), giving you several options to work with, including gender.
From my experiments, the first, and maybe only, filter that should be applied to make our face look more feminine, is the gender option. If the app recognized the face as feminine, it will give you a single feminine filter and two masculine filters (center image). The feminine option will enhance your feminine features by changing the shading and some proportions and also lengthening the hair a little (right image). The two masculine options will each turn your face into a masculine equivalent which, in my case, both were very different from my masculine self.
On the other hand, if the app identifies the face as masculine, it will give you a single masculine option and two feminine options; one with long and the other with short hair. I tried both feminine options with my male photo and the results were terrible and nothing like Cristy. However, after making that "woman" younger and applying makeup, the image appeared more feminine but not even close to what I look as Cristy. Needless to say, that I will not show those images here, but must admit that the resulting woman displayed a distant genetic resemblance to the man while not look remotely like the woman that man can turn into.
Of all the photos I have tried so far, and I have tried a lot, only one was identified as male and not as female. I think that my expression might have been too rough in that particular image. Unfortunately, I do not recall which was it, as I deleted it as soon as the results were not as expected. Call it vanity or disappointment! :P
CONCLUSION
I really like how the feminine filter make the original photo look much more feminine without drastic changes. You will notice a wider mouth, larger eyes with more shading and a more luminous face. It also lengthened the hair just a bit and changed the color to a lighter shade. I think that, in reality, similar results could be achieved if I were to spend some time contouring and shading my face and putting more eye shadow and eyeliner to make the eyes look bigger.
From an objective point of view, the original image looks convincingly feminine but still displays masculine proportions and features. The resulting image is, in my opinion, convincingly feminine and could fool most of the people who see it. The way I see it is how would my face could change if I were to take hormones. Tempting as it may be, I will never post a photo that has been enhanced with the app without making it very clear the enhancements that have been applied and will, most likely, post it next to the original for illustrative purposes.
In future postings I will show how age and hair length can be changed and finally how using the only makeup filter that comes with the free app, results in overkill and very fake looking images.
Oh, and nothing I can do about the big nose!

Antes de compartir impresiones más detalladas de los resultados de utilizar la FaceApp para resaltar y modificar el rostro, les comparto el primer filtro que podemos aplicar. Cuando suben una foto a la aplicación, toma unos segundos en lo que identifica rostros. Si encuentra solo un rostro, procede a abrir la imagen y si identifica más pregunta cuál se quiere utilizar. Una vez se tiene el rostro, se muestra la pantalla inicial (imagen izquierda) y da varias opciones para elegir, incluyendo género.
De acuerdo con mis experimentos, el primer, y probablemente único, filtro que deberíamos de aplicar para lucir más femeninas, es el de género. Si la aplicación reconoció la foto como femenina, presentará únicamente un filtro femenino y dos masculinos (imagen central). La opción femenina resaltará las características femeninas, cambiando proporciones, iluminación y sombreado del rostro y alargando el cabello un poquito (imagen derecha). Las dos opciones masculinas transforman tu rostro en un equivalente masculino que, en mi caso, ambos resultaron muy distintos a mi verdadera identidad.
Por el otro lado, si la aplicación identifica el rostro como masculino, el menú presentará una sola opción masculina y dos femeninas; una con cabello corto y la otra con cabello largo. Yo hice la prueba con las dos opciones femeninas utilizando mi foto masculina y los resultados fueron terribles y en nada parecidos a Cristy. Sin embargo, luego de hacer a esa "mujer" más joven, ponerle el cabello largo y maquillaje, el resultado fue más femenino pero sin siquiera acercarse a cómo luzco como Cristy. No compartiré ninguna de esas imágenes aquí pero debo de admitir que la mujer resultante mostraba algún parecido distante al hombre pero ninguna con la mujer en la que ese hombre se transforma en la realidad.
De todas las fotos que he probado hasta ahora, y he probado muchas, solo una fue identificada como hombre y no como mujer. Esto seguramente se debió a que mi expresión en esa foto es muy dura. Desafortunadamente no recuerdo cuál fue esa imagen ya que la borré en cuanto los resultados no fueron los esperados. Llamémoslo vanidad o desilusión :P
CONCLUSIÓN
Me gusta cómo el filtro femenino hace ver la foto original más femenina sin cambios drásticos. Podrán notar una boca más ancha, ojos más grandes y mejor sombreados y un rostro más luminoso. También alarga y aclara el cabello un poquito. Considero que, en la realidad, se pueden obtener resultados similares utilizando maquillaje de contorno y maquillar más los ojos para hacerlos lucir más grandes.
Desde un punto de vista objetivo, la imagen original luce convincentemente femenina pero muestra proporciones y características masculinas. La imagen resultante, en mi opinión, es convincentemente femenina y engañaría a la mayoría de personas que la vieran. Yo lo veo como la manera en que luciría mi rostro si hubiera tomado hormonas. Por tentador que sea, jamás compartiré una foto que ha sido alterada con la aplicación sin mencionar la manera en que la imagen fue manipulada y seguramente la publicaría junto a la imagen original para efectos ilustrativos.
En comentarios posteriores les mostraré los efectos de manipular la edad y longitud del cabello y finalmente como al utilizar el único filtro de maquillaje en la aplicación gratuita, resulta en una imagen que luce demasiado artificial.

La coloración tiene su origen en la meteorización de minerales que contienen sulfuros de metales pesados hallados en los yacimientos a lo largo del río, proceden de los depósitos hidrotermales de rocas de pirita (sulfuro de hierro) y calcopirita (disulfuro de hierro y cobre). El proceso de meteorización se debe a la oxidación microbiológica de estos minerales, causada principalmente por unas bacterias especiales, arqueobacterias, que transforman los iones sulfuros en ácido sulfúrico y liberan metales pesados como cationes en el agua. Esta es la causa tanto del color como del pH muy ácido (entre 1,7 y 2,5). A pesar del alto contenido de metales pesados: hierro,cobre, cadmio, manganeso, etc., hay oxigeno en ellas. La NASA escogió este hábitat para estudiar, por su posible similitud con el ambiente del planeta Marte, confirmando la posibilidad de que determinados tipos de organismos puedan sobrevivir bajo las restrictivas condiciones en Marte.

How real are we?
In this time and age, it is no longer easy to tell reality (truth) from fantasy (illusion). Every day we are bombarded with information that appears to be real but too extreme (for good or for bad) to be true. Social networks and supposedly serious news media, feed us all sorts of biased images, videos and reports that we need to filter to draw our own conclusions. The problem is that we grew up believing that what we saw, heard or read in the media was unquestionably true. Now, some people and institutions use that belief to manipulate our opinion and force us to take sides on every possible issue or event. What is good or true for one group or side is necessarily bad or untrue for the other and there is no room for in-betweens!
As technology allows us to distort reality, it becomes more difficult to come to definite conclusions. Take the movie industry, for example. The time will come in which actors, locations and film will no longer be needed to produce movies. Computer geeks will come up with all sorts of scenarios and characters to do the job with such realism and perfection that we will not be able to notice the difference. Hollywood will be replaced by Silicon Valley and filmmakers by game programmers. The good news is that actors will still have the theater to portray their characters, until androids take their place, in a hopefully very distant future. The question, not now but in some time to come, is if we will still be able to get a crowd together in a large room without fear of getting sick or seen by others. I digress but you get my grip.
In our realm and speaking as a heterosexual CD, fantasy and illusion have always played a key role as we attempt to appear female while being actually male. We rely in all sorts of trickery and gadgets to achieve our goal. In this scenario, is the act of crossdressing deceiving and untruthful or not? In my case, I am a “real” male who happens to be a “real” crossdresser that, when asked while appearing as a female, will always admit to being a male CD. My personification of Cristy might be deceiving but not a lie; lying would be telling someone that I am an actual woman when I am not. In any case, the truth always prevails and will come out; at least until illusion becomes the standard and reality the exception.
The next and more recent modality in our form of illusion is even more artificial yet more tempting and easy to implement. I am talking about those phone apps, advertised in social media all the time, that with one click can take a photo or video of a person and make him look like her, her look like him and all the in-betweens. Are you telling me that without investing money in wigs, makeup, etc. or time and effort in applying them, we can achieve the results we so desperately seek? Even more so; if we go through all the effort of getting dolled up and achieve a decent feminine appearance, there is an app that can turn us from a fairly looking woman into a gorgeous girl 20 years younger! It is hard to resist the temptation, isn’t it? Was not that, along with the proverbial pill that would turn a man into a woman for a few hours, what every CD dreamed of? Would that be cheating or not?
For years I have played with Photoshop producing my “body snatches” some of which turned out pretty believable. However, I have always made it clear that it is my ugly face blended with a gorgeous woman’s body dressed to the nines. By the same token I have not resisted the temptation to modify my own photos to make me look shapelier and more feminine. In both cases there is some time and creativity involved as well as knowledge of the software. I take pride of my virtual work and enjoy doing it. As a matter of fact, I used to do the body snatches years before I started posting my real photos. When I make them, I either kept them to myself (my own fantasy) or, before Flickr imposed the 1K photo limit for free accounts, I posted them in the “Cristy with Vitamin P” (P for Photoshop) page:

In my humble opinion, things have value depending on the time, creativity and effort you invest in them. This is why, tempting as it may be, I have never downloaded any of those apps and have never tried their magic on Cristy. Wait, I am not being totally honest. The main reason I don’t download them is because I don’t have any Cristy stuff in my phone and I like to keep it that way. Yes, I am curious but not enough to get a separate phone for Cristy or pay for the app even if it is not expensive. I’d rather play with my own creativity and possibilities in Photoshop even if it takes some time and, when I do, you can rest assure that, as I have always done, I will let you know the photo was doctored, except when it is too obvious.
I am not saying that those who enjoy playing with face apps and such, without admitting to it, are lying to us because, after all, they are living their fantasies and I respect that. Is it misleading? Yes, but how misleading when, by concept and nature, we already start misleading (men pretending to look like women)? It is either “misleading squared” or maybe “enhanced misleading”. I prefer when someone admits to using apps when posting a photo that has been dramatically enhanced but respect their right to live the illusion. After all, there is no harm done and, like I said, we are all performers of illusions. Come to think of it, even the most beautiful genetic women are using those apps to improve on perfection! By nature, women always want to look better regardless of how beautiful they are and, as “women” we are expected to want it too.
I guess that what makes me nostalgic is the fact that more and more “virtuality” is replacing reality and fear the day in which nothing will be what it appears to be. Hopefully there will never be a time in which “actual reality” will become the unusual experience. After writing this rant, I came across the video I share below that relates to what I was mentioning about Hollywood.

This essay was written not as a critique but rather as a personal analysis and reflection on the times we are living, applied to our realm as gender illusionists.
In this particular case:
I am not a Photoshop guru, but I am a perfectionist and took the time to alter the original photo so that the adjacent surrounding context, like the sofa and chairs, remained the same. It took me about a half an hour to produce the “After” image and another 15 minutes for the “Before”. Making myself fatter and a bit less attractive was easy. However, when it came to the “After before after”, it took me almost two hours to make myself look more feminine, thinner and younger. Did I enjoy it? You bet! It is certainly fun to fantasize about what could be or could have been but would never say that I am the one in the lower left corner. After all, I only get to look like one of the photos a few days a year. I hope it is quite obvious which is the one :P

¿Qué tan reales somos?
En estos dorados tiempos, ya no es tan fácil distinguir lo real (verdadero) de la fantasía (ilusión). Todos los días somos bombardeados con información que parece real pero demasiado extrema (para bien o para mal) para serlo. Las redes sociales y los, supuestamente serios, medios de comunicación nos presentan todo tipo de imágenes, vídeos y reportes tendenciosos y polarizados que debemos filtrar para sacar nuestras propias conclusiones. El problema es que crecimos con la creencia de que lo que veíamos, escuchábamos o leíamos en los medios era verdad irrefutable. Hoy, algunas personas e instituciones utilizan esa creencia para manipular nuestra opinión, obligándonos a tomar partido para cada asunto o evento posible. Lo que es bueno o verdadero para un grupo o lado es necesariamente malo o irreal para el otro sin dejar espacio para posiciones intermedias.
A medida que la tecnología nos permite distorsionar la realidad, se hace más difícil alcanzar conclusiones definitivas. Tomemos como ejemplo la industria filmográfica. Llegará el momento en que ya no será necesario contar con actores, locaciones y cámaras para producir películas. Expertos en programación proveerán todo tipo de escenarios y personajes para sacar la tarea con tal realismo que no seremos capaces de detectar la diferencia. Hollywood será reemplazado por Silicon Valley y los productores de cine por programadores de juegos. La buena noticia es que a los actores todavía les quedará el teatro para representar sus personajes, hasta que sean reemplazados por androides en un futuro que esperemos sea muy lejano. La pregunta, no ahora sino en un futuro, es si todavía podremos reunirnos cantidades grandes de personas sin temor a contagiarnos de algo o de ser vistos por otros. Me salgo del tema, pero espero poder transmitir mi mensaje.
En nuestro contexto y hablando como un CD heterosexual, la fantasía y la ilusión han desempeñado siempre un papel clave en nuestro intento por parecer mujeres, siendo en realidad hombres. Recurrimos a todo tipo de trucos y artilugios para conseguir nuestro objetivo. ¿Será que, en este escenario, el acto de travestirse es un engaño o mentira o no? En mi caso, yo soy un hombre “real” que resulta ser un “CD real” que, cuando le preguntan al estar transformado en mujer, siempre admite que es un hombre CD. Mi presentación como Cristy puede ser engañosa pero no es una mentira; la mentira sería decir que soy una mujer cuando en realidad no lo soy. De cualquier manera, la verdad siempre prevalece y se hace evidente; al menos hasta que la ilusión sea el estándar y la realidad la excepción.
La siguiente y más reciente modalidad en nuestra forma de ilusión es aún más artificial pero más tentadora y fácil de implementar. Me refiero a esas aplicaciones para teléfono que se anuncian por todas partes en las redes sociales que con un clic, transforman la foto de un hombre para hacerlo parecer mujer y viceversa con todos los intermedios imaginables. ¿Me están diciendo que, sin invertir un centavo en pelucas, maquillaje, etc., y el tiempo y esfuerzo necesario, podemos alcanzar los resultados que tanto anhelamos? ¡Es más, si aún así nos tomamos el tiempo de asumir una apariencia femenina, existe una aplicación que hará que esa mujer que parecemos luzca como una verdadera belleza con 20 años menos! ¿Es difícil resistir la tentación, no es así? ¿No era eso, junto con la mágica pastillita que transforma a un hombre en mujer por unas horas, lo que todo CD había soñado? ¿Se consideraría esto, hacer trampa?
Por años he jugado con Photoshop produciendo mis “apropiaciones de cuerpo” logrando resultados bastante buenos en algunas. Sin embargo, siempre he dejado claro que se trata de mi carota puesta sobre cuerpos de mujeres muy bellas y vestidas de manera increíble. De la misma manera, no he resistido la tentación de alterar mis propias fotos para hacerme lucir un cuerpo más delgado y femenino. En ambos casos hay que invertir tiempo y creatividad, así como conocimiento del programa. Siento orgullo de mis creaciones y disfruto mucho haciéndolas. Por cierto, empecé a hacer mis apropiaciones de cuerpo mucho antes de publicar mis fotos reales en Internet. Cuando las hago las guardo para mí (es mi fantasía) o, antes de que Flickr impusiera el límite de mil fotos para las cuentas gratuitas, las subía a la cuenta de “Cristy con vitamina P” (P por Photoshop):

En mi humilde opinión, las cosas tienen valor de acuerdo con el tiempo, creatividad y esfuerzo invertido en ellas. Es por ello que, por tentador que parezca, nunca he bajado alguna de esas aplicaciones y tampoco he probado su magia en alguna foto de Cristy. Esperen, no estoy siendo del todo honesta. La verdadera razón por la que no las bajo es porque no tengo nada de Cristy en mi teléfono y prefiero mantenerlo así. Por supuesto que me da curiosidad, pero no la suficiente para tener un teléfono independiente para Cristy o pagar por la aplicación aunque sea barata. Prefiero jugar con mi propia creatividad e imaginación en Photoshop, aunque tome tiempo. Cuando subo una foto alterada, siempre lo menciono; excepto cuando es demasiado obvio.
No quiero decir que quienes utilizan estas aplicaciones, sin admitirlo, nos mientan pues al final, viven su propia fantasía y lo respeto. ¿Es esto engañoso? Lo es, pero ¿qué tan engañoso cuando, por definición empezamos con engaño (somos hombres aparentando ser mujeres)? Creo que es “engañoso al cuadrado” o “engaño mejorado”. Yo prefiero cuando alguien aclara que la foto que comparte está bastante modificada, pero respeto su derecho de vivir su ilusión. Al final, no se hace daño a nadie y, como he dicho, todos somos ilusionistas. ¡Ahora que lo pienso, hasta las mujeres genéticas más bellas utilizan estas aplicaciones para mejorar su perfección!
Creo que lo que me da nostalgia es el hecho de que cada vez más la virtualidad reemplaza a la realidad y temo que llegue el día en que nada sea lo que pareces ser. Espero que jamás llegue el día en que la “verdadera realidad” sea la experiencia inusual. Este ensayo no fue escrito con el ánimo de criticar sino como una reflexión y análisis personal de los tiempos en que estamos viviendo, aplicado a nuestro ámbito como ilusionistas de género. Por naturaleza, las mujeres siempre quieren lucir más bellas independientemente de que tanto lo sean y, como “mujeres”, es de esperarse que nosotras también lo queramos.
En este caso en particular:
No soy una gurú del Photoshop pero sí me considero una perfeccionista y me tomé el tiempo de alterar la foto original de tal manera que no se modificara el contexto adyacente (sofá y sillas). Me tomó media hora producir la imagen “Before” (Antes) y otros 15 minutos para la “After before” (Después de antes). Hacerme lucir más gorda y un poco menos atractiva fue fácil. Sin embargo, cuando tocó la “After before after” (Antes de después de antes), me tomó casi dos horas para hacerme lucir más femenina, delgada y joven. ¿Qué si lo disfruté? ¡Por supuesto que sí! Por supuesto que es divertido fantasear acerca de lo que pudo o podría ser, pero jamás diría que soy la de la esquina inferior izquierda. Después de todo, puedo lucir como una de las fotos solamente pocos días al año. Espero que sea obvio cuál es esa foto :P
