Hercule combattant Achéloüs métamorphosé en serpent (Hercules Battling Achelous Transformed into a Serpent), on display in Cour Puget of the Richelieu Wing, was completed in 1824 by French sculptor François-Joseph Bosio and cast in bronze by Auguste Carbonneaux. This large-scale bronze group depicts a moment from Greek mythology in which Hercules wrestles the river god Achelous, who has transformed into a serpent to avoid defeat in their contest for the hand of Deianira. The muscular figure of Hercules pins the coiled serpent beneath him in a taut, diagonally composed struggle. First exhibited at the Salon of 1824, the work was commissioned in 1822 by the Maison du Roi following Bosio’s successful plaster version shown in 1814. Initially installed in the Tuileries Garden near the palace, it was relocated several times before entering the Louvre collection in 1992.
The Louvre is the world’s most visited museum and one of its largest, housing over 35,000 works of art from prehistory to the 19th century. Originally built as a fortress under Philippe Auguste in the late 12th century, it was transformed into a royal palace and later into a public museum during the French Revolution in 1793. Its collections span eight departments, including Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman art, Islamic art, sculpture, decorative arts, paintings, prints, and drawings. The museum is organized across three wings—Denon, Sully, and Richelieu—surrounding the Cour Napoléon. The modern glass Pyramid entrance, designed by architect I. M. Pei and inaugurated in 1989, unifies the historic palace complex while serving as a symbol of the museum’s global identity.
