Students and the Zama community recognized Red Ribbon Week, promoted Oct. 23 through Oct. 31, to honor the life of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a former DEA agent who was killed fighting for drug awareness.

Students learned healthy living advice and drug-free awareness from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Oct. 24 during a visit to Camp Zama. This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “the healthy me is drug free.”

Activities began with a commemoration ceremony at Zama American Middle School on Oct. 8.

Other activities include tying red ribbons to trees; red ribbon themed days at the elementary schools, a creative artwork contest, and ASAP volunteers educating students about the dangers of drug abuse.

About

Don’t Walk By (DWB) is an annual outreach in New York City where volunteers walk through each street in Manhattan each winter on a search and rescue mission for the homeless. Volunteers seek to offer every single homeless person or those in need food, warm clothing, a blanket and the opportunity to get off the streets and enter a shelter and residential program.

Our Vision: Through an alliance of influential organizations, volunteers, outreach experts and resource providers, see that every man and woman living on Manhattan’s streets is offered a chance to transform their lives.

Our Mission: In response to Christ’s teaching in the parable of the Good Samaritan, we offer every single street person food, blankets, but most importantly, an opportunity to enter into a holistic residential recovery program that offers them new life in Christ and educational, vocational and housing solutions. This mission is primarily carried out during four Saturdays in typically in February in an outreach called Don’t Walk By.

Don’t Walk By is sponsored and executed through a partnership of faith-based organizations that serve the homeless population of New York City year-round. These partners are The Bowery Mission, Hope For New York, New York City Relief, New York City Rescue Mission, Street LIFE Ministries, and Goodwill Rescue Mission.

"Shifting Structures" is a site-specific project conceived by Brooklyn-based artist Jane South, who has become known internationally for her elaborate sculptural drawings. Using little more than a scalpel and colored inks, she transforms fragile folded paper into structures that appear industrially reinforced.

The exhibition consists of a single, monumental work made up of hundreds of individual drawing components that are re-configured according to the specifics of the KMA’s gallery. South is interested in responding to the unique architectural features of the space as a challenge to construct the work in unexpected ways. In two previous locations, the work assumed a shadowy, solid form, and in another location it appeared bright and open, and even allowed viewers to wander inside. Each is made up of a complex network of sculptural drawings resembling cages, boxed grids, latticed arches, and horizontal ladders—some suspended from tiny paper hooks. All her surfaces are defined in some way with colored marks, outlines and crosshatchings. During the latter stages of the installation, museum audiences will be able to watch South assemble her monumental drawing in the gallery.

Climate change policy - transforming ever-higher targets into growth and competitiveness in the EU Climate policy will be high on the agenda of the EU institutions during the ninth legislative term. The designated European Commission President identified the policy field as one of her key priorities in her political guidelines. Ursula von der Leyen not only promised to set the long-term climate target in law, but also expressed her willingness to increase both the 2030 and the 2050 greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. In the meantime, businesses across Europe face multiple challenges going beyond climate change, such as mounting trade disputes and speedy digitisation. Increasing or at least preserving their competitiveness in this challenging environment remains their top priority. The “Green Deal” should be a good deal for businesses in the EU, which need economically cost-efficient policies much more than ever-higher targets. Carbon leakage leading to a loss of employment in Europe and rising CO2 emissions worldwide is the worst-case scenario that needs to be avoided. The German and Austrian Chamber Organisations, DIHK and WKÖ, jointly with their European umbrella organisation EUROCHAMBRES, would like to discuss the future of the EU’s climate policy with business representatives, Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and many more. This even was hosted by Dr. Markus Pieper, Member of the European Parliament.
