I popped down Loch Eilt to a location where I could look across at the Fort William to Mallaig line. Quickly I saw I hadn't got the right day. I need the waters to be flat calm to get a nice reflection. And some nice light on the hills would help. The train, the Jacobite, was only slightly late but when it came, horror of horrors it was an old diesel relic pulling the train, and not a famous Black Five.........todays' train, no steam or smolke, definitely couldn't be called the Hogwart's Express. I tried imagining how many passengers would be disappointed the steam engine had been replaced with a diesel: it's just not the same.
So I had decided on a two frame stitched pano shot but that went wrong too! I seem to have cut off the end of the train in 'merging' the images. So with a steam train, streaming smoke and steam against the mountains, reflected on still waters it might have looked something, but...not today! At least I don't have to travel far for another try, but I can't predict what the conditions are like on the other side of the mountains from home!

I 62,56 km di binari che collegano le stazioni di Villefranche - Vernet-les-Bains e Latour-de-Carol - Enveitg sono tra i più spettacolari di Francia e di tutt’Europa.
Il servizio, gestito da SNCF, è assicurato dalle mitiche elettromotrici Z100 (più volte rimaneggiate e revampizzate, sono in servizio dal 1908/1912) trainanti varie vetture e, nella bassa stagione, dalle Z151 e 152 (due GTW 2/6 Stadler, in servizio dal 2004).
Non sono solo il materiale rotabile e il paesaggio a essere particolari: la ferrovia, a scartamento metrico, presenta pendenze del 60‰ e l’alimentazione è assicurata da una terza rotaia elettrificata a 850 V CC.

There were many people here. We caused quite the traffic jam. Many people asked what was happening. The answer we gave was, "train's coming". The cows were pretty cool too.

Did I say bullet? well... not so much! I took this picture in one of the most historical areas of Athens, Thisio. The "not so bullet" train here belongs to Athens' oldest urban transit system which started its operations back in 1869. Originally the line was connecting Thisio with Athens' main port, Pireaus. It's definitely not world's best or most modern subway, however as you ride the train you get to pass by some very historical buildings like the one in the background. This is Temple of Hephaestus, built between 449-415 BC, dedicated to Hephaestus, god of Fire, Metal working and Craftsmanship. Hephesteion follows the doric order, it is located at the north-west side of the Agora of Athens, on top of the Agoraios Kolonos hill and from the 7th century until 1834 it was used as an Orthodox church. If you ever find yourself in Athens as a tourist don't miss the chance to take the train from Pireaus to Athens downtown and for a little while feel like you took a bullet train and traveled through the ages.
