München Ostbahnhof - Munich East Station

This is the train driver of the magnificent steam loco, the Union of South Africa, that took us down to Weymouth on Sunday.

Union of South Africa is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive built in Doncaster in 1937. It is one of six surviving Gresley A4s, currently operational and mainline certified. It was briefly renamed Osprey during part of the 1980s and 1990s due to political opposition against apartheid South Africa at the time.

We left Trondheim not by boat this time but by train. The journey North to Bodo would take ten hours but as we passed through the most beautiful and varied landscapes the hours flew by.

We had a wonderful train guard who seemed to quite like us and told us a lot about himself and his country. He also said what side of the carriage to be at for the next amazing landscape and one point he said he would tell the traindriver to slow down so I would have a better chance of a good shot. This would not happen in England.

It was about two thirds of the journey when we passed through the Arctic Circle to some excitement

Anyway the shot was taken somewhere North of the Arctic Circle the quality is not great but it was taking through glass but you get an idea

I wonder how many young trainspotters have stood at a spot like this and decided they wanted to be a Train Driver when they grew up?

Primed for the 80-odd mile sprint up to London the Driver of Deltic 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' looks for the 'right-away' signal from the Guard and platform staff at Peterborough. The train is the 8.05am York - Kings Cross (1A08).

This iconic class, once the most powerful diesel locomotive on British Railways, was by now being increasingly displaced from the top-link Anglo-Scottish expresses by the High Speed Trains, with the class destined to eke out their final years on the less salubrious routes of the Eastern Region - for instance Hull to London. It has to be said though this was much to the pleasure of both enthusiasts and passengers alike along these routes, the latter more than happy to enjoy the cascaded Mk2 air-conditioned carriage stock which came with the locomotives.

For this shot, taken almost 42 years ago to the day, I was chuffed when the driver poked his head out of the window. It wasn't entirely unexpected, but even so I didn't hang around crouching down and framing him to include Crescent Bridge in the background. Nice to tick that one off!

I wonder if anyone recognises him....

A rather unusual sight on the railways around the Rhine is this EMU class 420, here seen on the 19th of October 2022 between Linz am Rhein and Erpel.

Greetings back to the traindriver!

Deutsche Bahn ICE (intercity express) train waiting to depart from Cologne Central Station

at Fort William station at the end of the run, candid, unposed shot of John Hunt

A record shot from 1977 captures Bristol allocated class 118 DMU, set B467, waiting at Gloucester station with an unidentified service.

Two years prior this station would have identified as Gloucester Central - this to avoid confusion with Gloucester Eastgate station which lay some 200-300 yards away and to which it was connected by a long enclosed wooden footbridge.

Gloucester Eastgate lay on a loop off the Birmingham to Bristol line, and endured the challenge of crossing a number of busy roads in the city. So, whenever a train passed through, several level crossings had to close simultaneously thus causing traffic disruption. In 1975 Gloucester Eastgate, together with the offending loop, was closed and all services routed via Gloucester Central which was then renamed simply Gloucester. The rationalisation, which made a lot of sense for both railway and community, did come at a price however with those Birmingham - Bristol route trains calling at Gloucester now having to reverse with the locomotive changing ends.

Gloucester station meantime was being re-developed and, in 1977, re-opened with all through services now focused on platform 2, which had been extended to 1,977 feet in length, enough to accommodate two inter-city express trains. What used to be the Up platform (visible on the right in this image) was relegated to parcel trains only use.

In this shot, taken not long after the new facilities had been opened, there's no shortage of mail-bags and parcels likely awaiting conveyance on regular passenger trains. A buffet was also available, although I have no recollection using it. The DMU, a BRC&W-built 3-car suburban unit of early 1960s origin, was likely numbered W51309, W59476, and W51324 (thanks to the ever helpful www.railcar.co.uk website) - scrutiny of the image suggests power car W51309 was nearest the camera. Note the Driver dressed in British Rail's typical uniform of the day, complete with tie and hat.

Although there's a headcode showing, I'm guessing it's a remnant from some time previously when they were still being regularly displayed - possibly a Bristol to Weymouth train, or similar destined for Southern Region metals. Photos from the period show that within a couple of years the now redundant headcode panel on this unit had been given the domino treatment.

Another upload from a Timeline Events / London Camera Exchange event I attended a few days ago at the Didcot Railway Centre. In addition to the opportunity to shoot the steam trains and several re-enactors, there were a couple of models and a rather spectacular fire performer.

It was quite a dull day so these shots were right at the limit given I'm using a ten year old D500, i.e. 3200 ISO, f2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/200th at about 160mm (in 35mm terms). I'm not sure everyone will agree but I think the graininess adds to the atmosphere of the image.

Kyoto made the same mistake like so many other cities and erased the tram (streetcar) lines to create space for individual car traffic. One tram line survived: The 7.2km Randen Arashiyama Main Line (aka Keifuku Line) runs from Shijo Omiya to Arashiyama in the western part of the city.

'Woo Woo' (I just love the child’s expression) There is room for a hole story in this image, the driver is really uncomfortable about political correctness, the child hates trains and was forced by his oblivious mother on the back to go on the train etc.

My husband and I visited the South Coast Annual Model Railway Exhibition held at Sheffield Park Railway, as he has a keen interest in Steam trains and model railways. It was the first time the railway had been open since the Covid lockdown and I thought the day would offer the opportunity to take some interesting photos of the old steam trains, all restored and maintained by a team of over 100 volunteers.

Bluebell Railway was one of the first preserved heritage lines in the UK, resulting in one of the finest collections of vintage steam locomotives and carriages – many of which were preserved straight out of service from British Railways.

This photo was taken from the platform as the 30541 train prepared to leave Sheffield Park for its journey to Horsted Keynes and East Grinstead.

HISTORY OF THE ENGINE: Built as 541 at Eastleigh in 1939 and operated until withdrawn in 1964 and sent to Woodham Brothers in Barry for scrap and remained there until May 1974.

The Q class was the last of Richard Maunsell’s loco designs. The meaning of the Q class was too produce a modern, simple replacement for some elderly pre-grouping locos that were being used for light goods/mixed traffic work. Only 20 were built between 1938/39 and 30541 is the sole survivor.

541 was withdrawn from service in 1964. Sent to Barry scrapyard, like many other locos there it escaped the cutter’s torch and was bought by preservationists in 1973 for £3,250.

In 1974 it was moved to Ashchurch in Gloucestershire where it stayed until 1978 when it moved to the Bluebell Railway.

An overhaul started in 2011 and it returned to service in April 2015, carrying BR livery as 30541.

EUROPORTE 4014 is on its way with a grain train from Bobigny (F) to the port of Antwerp (B) and is seen in front of the monumental station building of Soignies. The station was founded in 1840 and opened on October 31, 1841 - the day when the line between Tubize and Soignies was opened. Soignies was one of the first cities in Belgium with a station building.

The busy junction station of Selzthal features a big depot and a roundhouse where locomotives of all kinds are stored. One of them happens to be ÖBB's class 1144 electric locomotive, which is prepared for the next swift as the driver is heading towards the cab.

A day out exploring the town of Llangollen in 2012 saw us indulge my railway interest and spend an hour at the station, home of the heritage Llangollen Railway.

Aside from the delightfully preserved GWR station it was hard not to admire the superbly restored and elegantly designed two-car DMU stood in the platform, built by D.Wickham & Co. in 1957.

After delving into my early 1960s Combined Volumes, so far as I can make out, only three such sets were built and this is the only surviving one. Motor Brake Second no. E50416 is seen nearest the camera, with Driving Trailer no. E56171 at the far end.

Set on the banks of the River Dee in the heart of town, and with the loading bay and loading gauge just visible towards the far end of the station, what wouldn't you give to be transported back to the 1950s to enjoy the comings and goings of steam traction just here? Well, with a return ticket guaranteed of course!

MICK BRENNAN, the legendary Tasrail driver has drawn stumps. So popular with Tasmanian railfans due to his great attitude and friendly manner towards railfans in addition to his own professional driving skills, which were confirmed by the attendance of the C.E.O. of the company Damien White in the cab of TR11 for his final run.

Here we see Mick ( on right ) after leaving his TR unit at Tea Tree and after

a few impromptu photos between his colleagues and C.E.O. and then he came over and chatted to his railfan followers. Here after signing autographs for Rodney ( on left ), of

whom is an avid fan of Mick is then about to be whisked off back in the company car to Brighton Hub.

Mick is looking forward to playing golf and doing lots of travel in the years to come.

Gotta say we'll all miss you Mick.

Due to the low light and the freehand image, I focused on the outside, creating a cozy atmosphere in the cabin.
