"Traders Bank of Canada savings bank, 1891
The Toronto-based Traders Bank was strongly rooted in rural Ontario. In 1891 its inspector, Aemilius Jarvis, developed an ingenious cast-metal savings bank modeled after the bank's head office. The savings bank was left at farm homes where savers deposited coins in slots along its roofline. Compartments inside could be designated for specific savings purposes. Once a month, bank officials visited the farm to unlock the roof and "deposit" the savings."
Original building by David B. Dick. See entry for Traders Bank Block in Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Canada:
TRADER'S BANK BLOCK, Yonge Street at Colborne Street, for S.F. MacKinnon, 1889; demol. 1910 (Toronto World, 2 May 1889, 1; Globe [Toronto], 16 Dec. 1889, 8, descrip.; Horwood Coll. 297; 298)
Our re-route through Texas included a stop at the Traders Village Flea Markets, next to the campground we chose along Rt. 20, between Dallas and Fort Worth.
Acadia Traders
New France hamlet, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA
The Acadia Traders gift shop opened in winter 2016, featuring a selection of Canada-based merchandise and a wine tasting bar. The building was originally used as The Country Store Candle Shop, a store selling hand-carved candles that opened with the park in May 1975. It became The Bitter Root Company Store in 1984, though it appears that the candle carver still occupied a smaller portion of the salesfloor. The entire building became candle carver space again in the early 2010s when it was converted to The Village Candle Carver, which was relocated here in winter 2016.
After 3 weeks of "slumming" it around Burma, we end up in some free 5 star accommodation thanks to my dad!
