We hopped off the interstate to kill some time in Indianapolis and wound up parking across the street from this church just north of downtown, which operated out of the building that looked like it might have been a bank at one time. But while the bank comparison may seem appropriate for many churches in the modern era and for this specific church in particular, the building has always been a church. According to an article from last September in the Indianapolis Star, this limestone structure was built in 1912 as the home of the Second Church of Christ Scientists. Baptists bought it in 1968, and the Baptists sold it to the Jehovah's Witnesses a decade later. The building's been up for sale since 2012, with a list price of $2.9 million. Late last year, a suburban megachurch based in Whitestown and called Traders Point bought the structure so they could open their third campus, their first in Indianapolis proper. Essentially, the church is franchising, and it's spending a Hell of a lot of money to do it. It plans to open its fourth location at the end of this year, and I'm sure the money will flow.
Stuff like this always makes me think of the story of Jesus cleansing the temple of the merchants and money changers.
