This is a potted history of Fitch Lovell meat division aka West Layton Ltd
It all started in 1950 when Fitch Lovell bought 7 shops called Layton & Burkett, Things seemed to go well even though rationing was on,
So they were approached by Bernard Thompson who went on to be a Smithfield trader he had 10 good shops in North London which they bought.
T M Cox was next with 4 good shops in the East end, Cox,s wife being Miss Cornell of John Best ltd fame,
By 1958 Layton & Burkett had grown to 49 shops with Cox in charge, Boosted by the acquisition of Edgley,s
By now Layton & Burkett were in a strong position so they merged with West Butchers who had built up a good group of 80 shops by Jim Preston which included Parish & Summerfield & Baldwin bros
Other Co,s acquired were Kemsleys,(13) (kent) E W Cripps(1) (sussex) Harts(1) (chichester).Wells bros (1)(guildford) Trotmans (1)of Newbury, Fitzpatricks (1)of Edmonton, John Best 1 at 34 Broadway.
Enter the Gunner side of the business, Started by Bob Gunner he opened butchers & provision shops in equal numbers & by 1960 had 118 shops, He went of to Canada to pursue other interest & sold out to Joseph Richards who had 40 shops which included Chalk & Cox,
Joe suffered with ill health & approached Fitch Lovell to merger which was accepted & the resulting company was called West Gunner some 250 shops.
Although Gunner & West Layton shops ran seperately but used the companys Highland food products for their small goods,
West which by then was the main trading name suffered the might of the Supermarkets in the 70,s & 80,s.
Fitch Lovell sold their West Gunner chain now down to just over a 106 branches to Union International in 1983 (Vestey) Dewhurst for £4.1 million,
This Trader was photographed in Gun Hill Scrapyard about 7 years ago now. It was a petrol powered 2/3 ton tipper, ex local builder in Manningtree. It had sat in that yard about 25 years and the only parts missing of it were the back lights and the bonnet badge. It gave up lots of very useful and extremely hard to obtain spares! The most valuble being a complete set of cab glass!

I would recommend this hotel any day - it was clean and comfortable - and very close to two major places of interest - Orchard Road and the Botanical Gardens. Everywhere else was easily accessible by public transport, or walking.
A trader at the old market in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt (April 2009). The colors and look of this local man intrigued me.

Entitled, Traditional Trades of Little India by Psyfool. Traditional Trades of Little India is a mural woven together by local artist Psyfool. It tells a tale of the parrot astrologers, dhobi (washerman), and the many traders and merchants who settled in the area years ago.
In the past, this was a common sight, too, at Dhoby Ghaut, as the name suggests. It was a place where Indian washermen at the Stamford Canal area converged and congregated.
Dhoby means “washerman” in Hindi, while Ghaut or ghat in Hindi refers to the area along a riverbank used for bathing or washing. In Tamil, Dhoby Ghaut was called Vannan Theruvu or “Street of the Dhobies”.
