The wind was up in the Bow River Valley, so we opted for a cross country ski outing to a location just outside the Banff townsite. It lies just beyond the historic Cave and Basin facility, which was the birthplace of the Canadian national park.
We haven't done much cross country skiing this year, so we thought Moraine Lake Road would be a good one. The views are stunning, and the track has no surprises - not the easiest but no surprises.
A perfect day! The temperature was just right, in the single-digit minus temperatures (Celsius), hardly a breath of wind, not a cloud to be seen, and plenty of snow. The track-set on the trail was reasonably good, considering how remote the trail is. We skied more than 15 km's return distance, and gained, with the many ups and downs, 425 m's, well more than 2 Calgary Towers! Uphill! On skies! No chair lift!
While New Year's Day started cloudy in Calgary, the sun was ablaze in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country, giving perfect conditions for cross country skiing.
Winching carvan AL2044 yesterday started with the car running on two short tracksets, that were coupled up in short time!

A long overdue track upgrade has been attacked with vigour in the last year or so, with the attainment of 70 and 91 pound tracksets to replace a lot of the 40 and 55 pound track that was in place. In the process, a reconfigured yard and main layout is also taking shape. Ocean Beach Railway, 31st August 2014

This is the two tracksets throught the crossing that we have built. Next step is to form the surface with sleepers.

The Watridge Lake freeway, errr, trail at Mt. Shark. Nicely groomed to whisk people more capable than I into the back country. This trail is a jumping off point for Assiniboine and on into B.C.
