Not long after sunset, five SY class locos putter about in a section of the massive opencast coal pit at Jalainur, near the Chinese border with Russia.
Spoil trains were pulled out tender first with the loco at the 'left' end of the train as seen here - two loaded trains pushing/pulling uphill, while an empty moves downhill. The fourth train from left looks like a work train with a crane, repositioning tracksets. Coal loads like the train at right had the loco at the 'right' end of the train which is largely hidden behind the foreground hill.
The coldest temp we saw here was minus 36 degrees C (minus 33 F), before the wind...

The big electric excavator is pressed into action due to the blue loader being out of action - as it often is - for repairs.
The old tracksets and trucks in the far-right distance are evidence of the ongoing decline in rail working at the open cast mine.

Today was a splendid day to try a trail we had never skied before - mild temperatures, little wind, and endless sun. The Bill Milne Trail connects the Ribbon Creek area with Wedge Pond, a very scenic route.
A perfect day! The temperature was just right, in the single-digit minus temperatures (Celsius), hardly a breath of wind, not a cloud to be seen, and plenty of snow. The track-set on the trail was reasonably good, considering how remote the trail is. We skied more than 15 km's return distance, and gained, with the many ups and downs, 425 m's, well more than 2 Calgary Towers! Uphill! On skies! No chair lift!
We saw this cutie on the way to the trailhead.

Our last adventure for 2012. With a minus 20 C start, it was a bit chilling at the beginning. It was our first outing on cross country skis this season, so we kept it short.

We haven't done much cross country skiing this year, so we thought Moraine Lake Road would be a good one. The views are stunning, and the track has no surprises - not the easiest but no surprises.

The wind was up in the Bow River Valley, so we opted for a cross country ski outing to a location just outside the Banff townsite. It lies just beyond the historic Cave and Basin facility, which was the birthplace of the Canadian national park system.

We're rebuilding road 4 siding - which was put in temporarily to accommodate Cyclops. Two tracksets were pulled up to allow truck and crane access to the workshop. Recently we moved bogies, wheels and boilers - road vehicle access shifted to the east

Sat 16th February we put together a trackset just inside the rail vehicle shed and connected to road two. Hugh, John and Peter stand alongside the frames of Wb 299 during the move inside.
