Lagan towpath at sunset. Thought it was time to have a go at HDR again. Can never tell where to draw the line with processing though, any comments?!

Along the Slackwater section of the towpath, there are survey markers set every 200 feet or so. There seems to be some slight order in that marker 881 follow marker 880, but then the next marker is 852. If one thought that someone had mistakenly put a 5 instead of an 8 they would be wrong because 882 is 4 markers further downstream. I waypointed all of the markers with my GPS and seeing them all lined up in sequence doesn't make them any easier to understand.

While most of the destroyed area of the slackwater towpath is still it's original 5 to 6 feet above the Potomac's normal pool, with the retaining wall gone, the towpath has narrowed from erosion. The remaining trail occasionally runs close to the 40 foot high rock wall that runs for most of the mile below McMahon's Mill.

Not much of a picture but I had to share this unusual shot of an unconcerned swan on its nest.

It's been a few years since we visited Llangollen, but my brother was passing through North Wales and it seemed like a good place to meet.

I liked the bag and bright colours of the table and chairs.

There are several of these elegant towpath bridges over disused arms of the canal. These arms were formed by straightening the route of the main canal by building embankments and digging cuttings. The old winding route of the canal was then left for access to so they could still transport goods to and from some of the villages. Over time these arms have become disused.

It had recently rained a lot and this is the reason for the milky sort of colour of the water. It was welcome extra water for the canal which had been suffering a water shortage.

Here, the foundation of the towpath was cut from living rock and has not been washed away.

Looking upstream from the first washout, one can see the debris pile that marks the end of the towpath wall and the 5 or 6 foot drop down to the river's surface. In the distance you can see the intact towpath wall and the detour sign at McMahon's Mill.
