. . . I put my tennis racket and beach volleyball away a few years ago, but soon I will pay the price for 20+ years of playing each sport!

I will have to cut back on my photography for the rest of the summer (very sad face) due to a total knee replacement scheduled for early next week.

Hoping to be the bionic man soon, and prayers are always appreciated!

Hints for a successful recovery - self-discipline. You must do your physical therapy every day. Force yourself to get up out of bed as early as possible after surgery, even when it hurts.

The person in this photo was without crutches within 7 weeks (with his physicians' approval).

Finally back SCUBA diving after seven weeks and two days of being stuck on land! It felt so good to be back in the water again! I was able to don/doff gear without difficulty. Also was able to climb the ladder in full gear, including weights, with no problem.

In addition to Dr. Kuczynski, I'd really like to thank the staff at Therapydia Kona who provided excellent physical therapy and helped me to achieve the goals I'd set for myself.

Also many thanks to the staff of Kona Diving Company, particularly Daniel, for making my transition back to diving fun and easy!

I suffer from osteoarthritis, especially in my knees, and this Wednesday I had my second total knee replacement this year. My right knee was done in April & I was done early enough to be sent home the same day. This time I had to remain overnight. Post surgery nurse had a great sense of humor & when he helped me into my room I didn't have my glasses with me & I pointed out that the sign looked like it said "chocolate" when it said "ambulate". He left me, returned immediately with a marker & changed "ambulate" to "chocolate". Then he changed "void" on the next line to "wine". Needless to say I had a good laugh. I will be moving slowly for a while, but have taken some photos earlier this month to get by for a while. I will be back to checking out your lovely shots a bit at a time! Cheers!😍😍😍

3 weeks ago I had my right knee joint replaced. Fun stuff (NOT!). This pic pretty much sums up my activities for the last 3 weeks. Except for when the physical terrorists came by to torture me! This week I graduated to going in to a real rehab place 3 times a week. Fewer sessions, but each session is a lot harder, though. I'm still using a walker right now, but I think soon I'll get to start using a cane.

Had a post-op appointment with my orthopedic surgeon today. Everything is looking good, and PT is going well. Still having some pain and trouble sleeping, but getting better. Diving still seems a long way off.

yup - that's me alrighty, with a 7-inch incision and 27 - count 'em - metal staples to pull it together over my new titanium knee. 3 nights in the hospital, followed by 11 in rehab (I said no, no, no, but went anyway).

I was in a facility in Millville, NJ, where the personal care was awesome and the food was awful. But I am home now and going back to work on Monday Dec 8 - almost exactly one month (or 8 weeks earlier than predicted) from the date of my surgery.

So far, I'll say it seems to have been worth every penny of the $59,200 !

UPDATE: Just got the rehab bill, the total is over $65,000 now !

Another update: More bills came thru -- I am up to $74,500 now! Thank the Good Lord for Health Insurance and Union Benefits!

A fairly crude illustration of my progress in therapy. Last Thursday, I could only bend my knee to 86 degrees. I was cautioned by the therapist not to backslide over the weekend. Today when I returned to therapy, I had not only not regressed, I had gained a very respectable 12 degrees! Now at 98 degrees, and my goal is 120 degrees. I think I may get there!

That's the theme in We're Here!: "Eeeeeww..." so I took a macro HD shot of my new scar. I named him Dr. Hfuhruhurr. He's itchy now and when I wear jeans, the fabric bothers him to the point of insanity. But I love him and he's beautiful!

Today, I put on a pair of jeans and left the house like a real goddamn person!

Normally, I sit around here, doing my usual boring stuff, wearing a pair of men's basketball shorts with one of my pairs of Dr. Martens boots. I look ridiculous but I don't even care.

But today- jeans! They're a size too big now and the fabric rubbing on my new scar makes it hurt and itch, but I left the house to go to the store and honestly, I'm tired of being the fat chick in the scooter-cart wearing sweatpants.

Soon I'll be able to wear jeans like a normal person because my scar will heal up and stop bugging me!

Here's a lovely mobile phone photo of my knee replacement scar. Gregg and Beefy are there because they're always there! (apparently, it is their duty to keep as close as possible to my leg).

Here's today's 365. A phone macro shot of my staples. Today was a "light" day- I'm a little more swollen than I was yesterday (or recently), so I took it a little easy with the exercises & iced a little more. The ink is slowly wearing off (since I can't actually scrub the damned thing).

An orthopedic surgeon at Boston's Mass General Hospital studies the x rays of a 68-year-old patient whose broken-down knees he had replaced with new titanium ones two years before. "I have to tell you," the patient said, "I have been pushing it with these new knees. I'm playing singles tennis and running flat out for balls. Am I going to wear these out? Do you see any wear and tear.?"

"Nothing," the surgeon replied. "They look perfect."

"Isn't this great outcome unusual?"

"No. It's typical."

"So how long will these knees last?"

"Maybe twenty years."

Then the surgeon gave the happy patient a copy of the x-ray. He wrote on it, "Good luck, may your knees last a 100 years!"

Man, the times we live in!

My view from the recumbent bike at therapy this morning. The recumbent bike is where I get to warm up before the acts of terrorism begin. I have to admit, though, that all the torture is getting results. I started at 84 degrees last Wednesday, and today I'm at 110 degrees! Only 10 more degrees to go. I've pretty much graduated to the cane also. I'm still a little uncoordinated with it, and it limits what I can carry around, too. I will be glad when all this is over and I can walk at least somewhat normally.

My other knee is in pretty bad shape too, but I think I'll be waiting until it's really hurting before I agree to have that one fixed. This has been waaaay harder than I expected, for sure.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone! Sorry I was such a wuss this time - I almost skipped it, but then decided I'd feel very left out if I did. OH, and this run marks the beginning of my 4th year of 7 Days! I've not missed a single day since I started!

See you all next time!

...I WILL spend my afternoon with you!

I finished season 1 of "True Detective", did my PT, had lunch, did some laps, and then settled in with my ice pack and "Blow Dry" on Netflix.

In the alphabet for February's Alphabet Fun 2017, today is the letter X... and I went the easy route.

The photo on my phone is a diptych of my right knee's X-rays. I named the new metal joint "Chappie". The first one (my left knee) is named "Steve Austin". Chappie's scar is named Dr. Hfuhruhurr and Austin's scar is Dr. Fronkensteen.

Well, here it is- New Year's Day. I'm not going to give in to the complaints of 2016 because you've all heard them. A bunch of my friends on Facebook were doing the status updates asking for "all the good things" that happened to us in our lives instead of the dreadful things.

My year started off with two hand surgeries- two weeks apart. I had the open carpal tunnel surgery done on my left, then right, hands. They told me that my nerves were so far shot that I might not get the feeling back in my fingers, but the surgery would slow (or stop) the progression. Well, I did get the feeling back! I got all the sensation back in all of my previously numb fingers, except for the very tip of my right index finger. That could still come back, but I'm okay if it doesn't. Now, as you can see from Dr. Hfuhruhurr in this photo- I scar ugly. I scar ugly and big and I usually have residual numbness in and around my scars. But, I only have some loss of sensation in the left hand scar from the carpal tunnel release surgeries.

Not a bad outcome!

A couple months later, I ended up having to get another total knee replacement. My first was eight years ago and it was hell to get through. Recovery was slow, my progress had just as many setbacks as it did forward momentum. It was amazing that I made it through (it took over a year). But this time? I had the surgery seven weeks before Bristol's opening weekend. I decided that I wasn't going to miss Bristol and would drag myself around with my walker if I had to... and, I made it! I used a cane for the first six weeks, on the seventh week, I carried my cane but didn't use it. On the eighth week, I left it in my vehicle. I had a few setbacks, but they were minor and did nothing to stop the forward momentum of my recovery. Here I am, just two weeks shy of eight full months and I'm at least 90% recovered. I still have some swelling now and then and I still have some stiffness issues (which is probably related more to the fibro now), but I can now get up and walk away from my seat without hesitation. I did that for the first time a week ago.

The first knee replacement, it took me over eight months to reach that point. But last week (seven months), I stood up and walked to the kitchen and when I realized I didn't have to wait till my leg caught up to my intentions before I took a step, I giggled maniacally and kept doing it with grand, sweeping gestures to draw attention to it. (nobody else cared, but I kept doing it).

I had a lot of positives in 2016. And because my recovery is swimming along and my fibro is getting itself back to "normal" (normal for me). I look forward to what 2017 brings to me... as it is now, I'm SO DONE having surgeries! I think three in a five month period is plenty.

This time - my left knee replacement - the surgery was more extensive , so the incision is about 5 inches longer than the one on my right leg. This shot - 12 days post-surgery - shows just a portion of the thirty staples used. The orangey tone on my skin is betadine, not a fake tan...

OUCH! Don't let anyone tell you these things don't sting... and really start to itch and aggravate if they stay in more than a week or so. I thought my doctor was dragging the removal process out too long, so I pulled out the final 10 all by myself. I had run out of patience with the itching and tenderness....

Now I am back at work and in therapy 3xweek... painful, but productive.

So...that's it, folks, I am officially outta real knees. Now I just have to hang onto my hips!

A total knee replacement involves replacing the damaged bone and cartilage of the knee joint, which provides articulating surfaces. The total procedure takes approximately an hour to hour and a half to perform and recovery time varies between patients. Correct rehabilitation following surgery significantly improves outcomes.

The Disabled Guy brought Beefy to see me today and at first, she wanted nothing to do with me. It took her about a half hour to get over herself and then she wouldn't leave my lap. She even followed behind me like she normally does (all while being cautious of my walker without being terrified of it).

my mom had a total knee replacement, and here are the staples keeping her shut. It is so horrible to look at- I can't even count them - to mention how many there are...

This is my new scar, Doctor Hfuhruhurr. He has 34 #staples in him & he's a glorious beast!

My staples come out on Thursday. Till then, I can't even put lotion on the scar. Honestly, I can't wait to see how Dr. Hfuhruhurr turns out. Fronkensteen turned out glorious. (what? I named my scars... Is that weird?).

When you have a major surgery like a joint replacement, little things become a big deal. Like, showering. Now, I don't need help showering, I just needed someone nearby in case I fell or has a problem. Last time, I had a shower chair and this time I don't. That makes showers very tiring.

I get tired of feeling gross and I can't get the Disabled Guy to come out here till later in the afternoon. Today, I said "Fuck this". I texted my daughter (who is at work) that I was taking a shower & I'd text her when I got out. (my son-in-law is a paramedic in the town where I am right now). My shower was uneventful and I had to rest (20 minutes!) before I got dressed... But here's the thing, I got dressed all by myself- nobody was here to help me with my shoes! But I managed to get them on anyway.

I got showered and dressed all by myself today!

So, I'm home now and I have been properly coated in the appropriate amount of dog hair.

The design of the high flex implants closely replicate normal knee. Rotating knee replacement implants can swing backward and forward giving the knee flexibility to move forward and outward.

High flexion gives patient the freedom to the extend that the patient can even squat , cross leg and sit on the floor.

And I got my life back. Eventually.

Here's a link to a diptych I did last year with my scar photo.

~Clicky-click~

I was doing some leg raises that are part of my PT routine and I realized the swelling in my knee was VERY visible. So, I took a photo. I can even see the three little marks made by the arthroscopic surgery I had back in the mid-90s.

At the beginning of this month (May 07), my Dad got his knee cut open, tendons and muscles disconnected, and a bunch of dead bone removed. Then, a fancy metal knee was inserted and connected, and they stapled him closed. He'll be able to return to work Monday. The secret, apparently, if you ever need a total knee replacement, is to do EVERY exercise your doctor and/or physical therapist suggest.
