My family has owned a waterfront cabin along Torch Lake (in Northern Michigan) for more than three generations. Myself, I make a yearly trip from the West Coast back to Michigan every summer so that I can see friends and family.
Naturally, I have my camera with me when I make these visits back East, and this photo was taken during my most recent trip to Michigan (2006).
Obviously, this is a long exposure, taken quite a bit after the sun had set.
Aside from a bit of saturation tweaking, there's been very little Photoshop work to this image.

Note: I'm trying to get in the habit of always telling folks about the great people and companies I do business with. Even though its totally against my nature to tell anyone where I get my clothes. I'm going to start doing it because its important to publicly support the companies that publicly support us. Especially designers and retailers who make fabulous clothes that actually fits us!
Norwegian flames. I fooled with the white balance when converting from RAW, but apart from that and the crop, this is a straight shot.

Antorcha de la Amistad (Spanish for "The Torch of Friendship") is a monumental abstract sculpture by Mexican sculptor Sebastián, installed in Downtown San Antonio, in the U.S. state of Texas. The work was commissioned by a group of Mexican businessmen living in the United States and friends of Mexico, and presented as a gift from the Mexican government to the City of San Antonio in 2002. It was unveiled on June 27, 2002, by the artist, Mayor Edward D. Garza, and then–Secretary of Foreign Affairs for Mexico and political analyst Jorge Castañeda Gutman

- Kniphofia uvaria 'Traffic Lights'
- Kniphofia, also called tritoma, red hot poker, torch lily, or poker plant, is native to Africa.
Evergreen species have strap-shaped foliage up to 1.5 m (5 ft) long. All plants produce spikes of upright, brightly coloured flowers well above the foliage, in shades of red, orange and yellow, often bicoloured.
The flowers produce copious nectar while blooming and are attractive to bees. In the New World they may attract sap-suckers such as hummingbirds and New World orioles.
Kniphofia uvaria originates from the Cape Province of South Africa, and has been introduced into many parts of the world as a garden plant. It is hardy in zones 5-10.
One of the objectives of our roadtrip was to visit the migrant schools in the town of Mae Sot on the border with Myanmar. My daughter had gathered together a heap of donated clothes, toys and bric a brac as well as raising money from within our own school community to help the Burmese teachers who work at the schools teaching migrant workers' children. The teachers and families live in often desperate conditions and their lives are incredibly difficult.
This man is the headmaster at one of the rural schools. Recently the entire school had to move because the original landlord didn't want them any more. Him and his wife have had to rebuild the school themselves as they are not allowed to use any of the teachers or parents to help out because of employment law (jobs like this must be done by Thais). Given that there is no electricity here the gift of a torch was greeted with the hugest of smiles.
In all the pictures from Maesot I have deliberately withheld names and locations to protect those depicted.
This origami torch is basically the same model as Ice Cream (flic.kr/p/2iWkQgZ), just with different colors and shaping.
