tool paramount 5/2/06

arrived : February 24, 2010

A few of my mother and grandmother's kitchen tools from the last 100 years. The cookbooks and strainer spoon probably go back the furtherest. Memories - even the ice pick was used by my parents to break up ice cubes for their martini's. Fresh squeezed orange juice manually done - often!

Chucked the camera kit and lighting kit in the boot last night hoping for some startrails.....unfortunately it clouded over pretty quick so I decided on a change of location and another see-thru car type lightpainting shot.

MacPro2,1 next to MacPro5,1.

The Mac Pro on the left is a 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. The Mac Pro on the right is a 2 x 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon with a 512GB Apple SSD, making it the most powerful in our studios when the picture was taken. Core and Accel cards for Pro Tools HD have been switched into the new one. They're a tight fit.

The logic board finished in matt black on the new one is rather swish, though I have no idea what 'BIG FRANK' and 'LITTLE FRANK' do; but they're labelled.

A very precisely sized tool, this one is part of an old TA tool kit. This is perfect for #25 chainring mounting bolts and especially nice for the old TA "domed" bolts. This is cut flush at the opening as opposed to modern sockets which are often tapered for an easier fit over hex bolts or nuts. This means there is much less chance of the tool slipping off and rounding the corners of old TA hex-head bolts... which always seemed to be made of soft steel and were poorly plated.

Every February my antique tool collecting club holds a little consignment auction.

I find it amusing to think that just a few years ago people were writing satirical articles about razors with 5 blades. Anyway, apart from the fact that I think it's harder to slash my face with, I don't think it does as good a job as my Gillette M3 power (which only has a poxy 3 blades ;-) ).

Tools in a carpentry workshop

For chemistry class Junior year, we had to shadow someone who's job involved chemistry. All I could think of was my mother's friend, who owns a funeral home. Since it's illegal for me to watch an actual person being embalmed, he showed me all the tools.

I've always hated cleaning my palette.

Subsequently I changed, quite a while ago, to using a glass palette (a broken, recycled, window pane) , -if I forget to clean it & the paint dries on it, run a razor blade scrapper across it and it's good as new.

Since then I've found a use for defunct CDs/DVDs, they're great, as disposable palettes, for small amounts of paints and a few colors.

Lately I'm trying Glad's, 'Press'n Seal' sealing wrap on my old wooden palette, use it' peel if, toss it. Not bad but I'm not too comfortable with the throwaway culture, will probable stick to glass.

Many of the jeweler's tools are adapted from another profession - for example, dentist's tools are great for jewelry work because they are so precise.

At this month's Open MAKE: Tools event, visitors were invited to explore their own creativity with our four Featured Makers from around the Bay Area, who shared their art, ingenuity, and techniques.

Guests made needle-felted creatures with Moxie, created three-dimensional shapes by sewing sheets of fabric together with Judy Castro, fused plastic with clothes irons, used sewing needles and conductive thread to make circuits embedded in bracelets and badges, and used motors and other tools to take Light Painting to a whole new level.

One day, on a whim, I added a hand hoe to an on-line purchase. I've tried all sorts of hand tools in the garden and have been disappointed almost every time. Like my cobra head weeder, most of them are gathering dust. Little did I know how much I would love this tool and how often I would use it. In fast, it's probably my most used garden hand tool.

I painted the English Wheel frame. It looks a lot better, and won't rust now.
