Building on the five-year vision of Addressing Europe’s Unfinished Business, Tools For Changemakers strengthens its training component while embarking on a three-year journey of exploration of the link between personal and collective identities in Europe, the rise of populism and nationalism in different European regions, the need to belong for old and new community members, unaddressed collective traumas, and the urgency to work with these issues in order to build more trust and cohesion in Europe.

On 15 December, the European Parliament’s environment committee will cast a decisive vote on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
A week ahead of the vote, on 7 December, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, Carbon Market Watch and WWF organized a media stunt to urge the committee members to vote for a bold reform that would turn the EU ETS into an effective climate protection tool.
So far, the ETS has failed to make the polluting industries pick up the tab for the harm they cause. Instead, they have been given a free-ride, granted low targets, low carbon prices and free pollution permits.
As the Christmas season is starting, polluters were asking Santa Claus for more presents from the ETS. Progressive MEPs (Margrete Auken, Jytte Guteland, Seb Dance, Tiemo Woelken and Jakop Dalunde) were trying to stop them from hoodwinking Santa into receiving more favours. The MEPs received a petition signed by almost 100 000 European citizens in the WeMove.EU community.

Many thanks to Philip North for this picture of the Genco power-tool shop on Parramatta Road in Stanmore, Sydney, taken in 1987. The flat above it had not been re-carpeted since it was built, and there was a cockroach in every corner. This is the place where I read 'Miller's Anatomy of the Dog', and tried to make sense of Biometry, before realising that I would be much happier doing History and Archaeology than Vet Science.
Harry, the old man who lived downstairs, ate nothing but boiled meat and potatoes - or so it seemed, judging by the smells that emanated from beneath his door. He used to lurk behind it like a trapdoor-spider, waiting to pounce on my friends whenever they came to visit. He would thrust his gap-toothed countenance at them, rasping, "Whatter yer doin' in 'ere?", enveloping them in a fug of alcohol. Welcome to Stanmore.
The burglar alarm in the power tool shop was hypersensitive. It used to go off in the middle of the night whenever a cockroach crawled across it - and there were, as I think I mentioned - a lot of cockroaches. Just across the road was the motorcycle shop. It was never open during the day, but at night, there were surreptitious goings-on. The local Mr Whippy van used to back into the yard beside the shop at 2 o’clock every morning. On the side of the van, there was a big sign saying, “Snow Cones”. One night, the police descended in a flurry of blue lights and sirens, and the Mr Whippy van never came again.
In the heat of summer, there was no better place to spend an hour writing poetry - or reading Brautigan, Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti - than the Green Man’s shop. The Green Man kept a traditional Aussie milk-bar, serving milkshakes in tin tumblers. We called him the Green Man because he seemed to spend all his life in the shop, haunting its shadier recesses like Boris Karloff on sabbatical, and his skin was as colourless as a cave-fish, but tinged with green when it caught the artificial light. We would drink our milkshakes, glance in awe at the Green Man, and experiment with disgusting menthol cigarettes.
You could get a meal in the local Mexican restaurant, and cinema tickets thrown in, for less than the price of a bag of shopping. I had tacos and enchiladas, and went to see Peter Weir’s ‘Witness’ until I could recite the whole screenplay. I started dressing like an Amish. Between the flat and the cinema, there was a wide doorway with a concrete floor. An old man slept there every night with his dog, and when winter came, he was shivering in his sleep. We snuck up and covered him with a rolled-up blanket. When we came past the next night, he was still shivering on the cold concrete, but his dog was in a state of bliss, cocooned in layers of wool.
