Doodleday /// 1/28/09

Here's a peek at what I bring to class. I carry it all in a very sophisticated case, namely, a gallon-sized freezer bag.

We keep our clay at the studio, and the water buckets and wheels (of course) are provided.

I like to think of them as "spinning doom slayers" but I think these are just tools for the lathes or milling machines. Industrial looking stuff like this is great though. I need to take more of these.

Jigsaw puzzle cutting die, and puzzle cut with the die.

New tool testing!! think it needs a bit of work!!. Didn't manage to get out till gone 10 tonight so was only able to get an hour down the beach!! But it was nice to spend a bit of time winding down before work. ha ha!!

Coffee and tobacco were essential tools of mining, made evident by the fact that you find remnants of both in just about every mine shack. The Velvet tobacco can in remarkable shape helped out by the dry climate of Dos Cabezas in southeastern Arizona.

This baby was a major find! (Next to my 110lb anvil and 12" Diacro Bench Shear...photos coming soon) A woman approached me at state fair and mentioned that her grandfather had had some tools for metalworking and might I be interested in something like this.

Might I?! I had been looking for a rolling mill for a good long time. I am still in the process of finding a stand or a way to mount this so it can be used but it is a beautiful piece of machinery and I can't wait to give it a whirl.

Some tools used by my grandfather in his dental practice in the 1920s and 1930s. Mother of Pearl handles, on all but one which is Ivory.

Built by the Carriage House at Cylburn Arboretum with help from friend and classmate Fernando Guerra. This simple rustic structure is a component of my final project for the Maryland Master Naturalist program, an educational & volunteer opportunity created by the University of Maryland Extension Program.

For my project, I utilized my scenic design and set building skills to create a semi-permanent modular play area in which children can experiment with and discover natural building techniques and materials. It is intended to be offered alongside conversational curriculum about and physical examples of animal and bird nests and how they are an expression of the ecosystem.

We were given three posts of about six feet in length, a spade shovel and post-hole digger as our basic components to work with. I also bought a roll of sisal twine for this project, and local bamboo was harvested. Other supplemental tools used included a pruning saw intended for outdoor work, a Japanese-style pull saw (probably intended for indoor use, but which cut through bamboo much faster and more precisely than the pruning saw) and a Makita Lithium-Ion screw gun, and a pocket knife by Kershaw to cut twine. Crocs to shuffle around in while moving stuff around in the Rubbermaid cart. The man would not be able to garden without these.

Challenge #2 - 02/25/07

This week's challenge has a HANDS theme. You are to take the following photos:

1. "Winner" and "Loser" self portraits. Make a "W" with your hands on against your forehead for "Winner". Make an "L" with your hand against your forehead for "Loser". Bonus points if your "L" is backwards. That takes a real loser!!

2. someone (you or anyone) doing "the claw".

3. a stranger making a Vulcan sign with their hand. Extra points for telling them to live long and prosper when they leave. We're just gonna have to take your word on that one.

4. someone (you or anyone) using sign language to make the first letter of their (or your) name.

5. someone holding a tool

Tool my chiropractor is using to try to break up scar tissue on nerves in my back. After a lubricant is applied to my back, the longer, curved edges of this tool are used to vigorously scrape along the nerves that run alongside the spine, and then cross over to my hip.

I've been able to feel a lumpy, bumpyness to those areas for several years, and just thought the bumps were bone spurs. But apparently, they're built up scar tissue, which is impeding the proper circulation of blood around my nerves.
