At this month's Open MAKE: Tools event, visitors were invited to explore their own creativity with our four Featured Makers from around the Bay Area, who shared their art, ingenuity, and techniques.

Guests made needle-felted creatures with Moxie, created three-dimensional shapes by sewing sheets of fabric together with Judy Castro, fused plastic with clothes irons, used sewing needles and conductive thread to make circuits embedded in bracelets and badges, and used motors and other tools to take Light Painting to a whole new level.

"Carpenter's Shop

Most early pioneers were skilled in carpentry, since homes, barns, and workshops were usually wooden.

Many days were spent in the forest using hand saws and axes to cut large trees for walls, boards, and shingles. Strong horses with ropes could be used to drag the large trimmed logs to the building site.

At the building site, tools of precision were used, such as the broad axe to hew out logs for walls, the froe to split shingles or shakes for the roofs, and the auger, used to drill holes for pegs, which essentially help hold the structure together.

More experienced carpenters had shops for their business, displaying expertise in making the finer wooden products. A farmer could trade livestock or fresh vegetables for basic furnishings such as doors, tables, and chairs. Using precision tools such as a hand plane or chisel, more admirable pieces like walnut hutches, chestnut mantles, or spinning wheels were fashioned."

Thomas James Rodoni was born in 1882 at Hotham East, Victoria, to Swiss and Irish parents. While living in Sydney in August 1914 as a man of 31, Rodoni joined the first Australian Imperial Force that would engage in the

Great War: the Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force.

A week after enlisting, Rodoni’s company embarked on the HMAS Berrima and sailed

to German New Guinea among a fleet with orders to seize two wireless stations and to disable the German colonies there.

Rodoni’s unofficial photographs – many of them “candid” shots, captured in the moment – are a rare glimpse of this pivotal moment in Australia’s

history. He has documented the energetic atmosphere of prewar Sydney and its surrounds, from civilian and military marches to battleships docked in Sydney Harbour, with accompanying crowds of people brought together for these special events. His camera voyaged with him on the expedition to

the Pacific region, taking images both from the ship’s deck and then again on dry land after disembarking.

Rodoni was stationed in New Guinea for five months with the AN&MEF after the successful capture of territory from the German forces. His striking

images are testament to his ease with the camera, and the ease of his fellow servicemen around this avid amateur photographer. He used his camera to record daily events and significant moments in the expedition, and made several group portraits of the officers and soldiers in his company. Yet his images also suggest a genuine curiosity for the foreign people and places where he was stationed, and a love of the photographic medium in which

he practiced during this early period of the war.

After leaving New Guinea with the AN&MEF and returning home to Australia in January 1915, Rodoni left the force to work in a Small Arms Factory

manufacturing munitions for the war. He soon married and settled in Newcastle with his wife, Catherine Annie Wilson, and had four children:

Thomas, Mary, Jim and William (Bill).

The wider collection of glass plate negatives – over 600 in total and with many views of Newcastle and its surrounds is an incredible legacy to Thomas Rodoni and his family.

Rodoni died in 1956 as a result of a car accident in Waratah, Newcastle.

The original negatives are held in Cultural Collections at the Auchmuty Library, University of Newcastle (Australia).

This tool was so sexy I had to have it when I saw it on sale at Tandy Leather's for $20. And it turned out to be useful to shoemaking. It cuts strips of leather off a large piece. Here shown with the 1/2" strip already cut.

Today I went to a talk about what to do if you find Aboriginal artifacts on your land and how they were made and what uses they had for various ones. I apologise ahead of time for the photos that are out of focus. You can still see the worked edges.

The talk was arranged because some worked stones were found recently on the land opposite the local hall. This is the first such talk that has been given in this area. There was a lot of interest and a large audience.

BIG5 Elephant. Kruger National Park. South Africa. Jul-Aug/2021

Elephant

Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Three species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), the African forest elephant (L. cyclotis), and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Elephantidae is the only surviving family of the order Proboscidea; other, now extinct, members of the order include deinotheres, gomphotheres, mammoths, and mastodons.

All elephants have several distinctive features, the most notable of which is a long trunk (also called a proboscis), used for many purposes, particularly breathing, lifting water, and grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which can serve as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. Elephants' large ear flaps help to control their body temperature. Their pillar-like legs can carry their great weight. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs while Asian elephants have smaller ears and convex or level backs.

Elephants are herbivorous and can be found in different habitats including savannahs, forests, deserts, and marshes. They prefer to stay near water. They are considered to be a keystone species due to their impact on their environments. Other animals tend to keep their distance from elephants while predators, such as lions, tigers, hyenas, and any wild dogs, usually target only young elephants (or "calves"). Elephants have a fission–fusion society in which multiple family groups come together to socialise. Females ("cows") tend to live in family groups, which can consist of one female with her calves or several related females with offspring. The groups are led by an individual known as the matriarch, often the oldest cow.

Males ("bulls") leave their family groups when they reach puberty and may live alone or with other males. Adult bulls mostly interact with family groups when looking for a mate and enter a state of increased testosterone and aggression known as musth, which helps them gain dominance and reproductive success. Calves are the centre of attention in their family groups and rely on their mothers for as long as three years. Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild. They communicate by touch, sight, smell, and sound; elephants use infrasound, and seismic communication over long distances. Elephant intelligence has been compared with that of primates and cetaceans. They appear to have self-awareness and show empathyfor dying or dead individuals of their kind.

Elefante

Plumbing Hints You Need To Hear Today

When you employ a plumber, it can cost a lot of cash for even a very easy repair that you might have done yourself. Read on for a few tips on solving your own personal plumbing problems with tools you have at home.

There is never an unsolvable problem when it comes to plumbing. You must try to take a break from that which you are working on, if you believe yourself becoming frustrated with all the job. The greatest errors start to occur when you walk outside , so take a rest and then become inpatient and angry.

Professionals should only do plumbing in the event that you do not comprehend plumbing or if you have a major difficulty. A lot of the huge problems that plumbers deal with, really have solutions that are simple. The plumber should be called in the end, anyhow.

There are simple methods to test your toilet for leaks that could finally result in great cost savings in the future. The most easy way to do that is always to pour a small amount of food dye into the holding tank of your toilet. In the early hours, if you have any color in the basin then you realize you’ve got a leak that needs some focus.

A proven way to avoid pipes from freezing during the winter will be to keep cupboard doors in your house which contain the conduits open. This can ensure that they get sufficient heat to maintain warm. Be sure additionally, to unhook and kind of hose outside and run a little water to clear any remaining water going outside’s conduits.

When it comes to plumbing an ounce of prevention is the best thing to stop things from going haywire. To be able to prevent clogging avoid doing things that might clog drains. Do not pour oil down the kitchen sink, and install hair catching filters in all your tubs. This can prevent lots of unneeded clogs.

Make sure you let a slow drip within the night time when you experience the chilliest of winter weather. A general rule is, when there is snow on the ground, make the water dripping. This reduces your own risk of waking up to frozen pipes that may cause an excellent deal and keeps a steady flow.

Hope isn’t lost in the event you drop a little thing or earring right into a sink drain. You can probably retrieve the thing, by carefully removing the U shaped trap underneath the sink. Bear in mind that the trap will soon be full of water, however, so have something to catch the spills.

As you read in the beginning of the particular article. Professional-plumbing services are expensive, and many plumbing problems can be solved by anyone who knows what must be achieved. Ideally , this short article has provided you the knowledge to prevent an expensive call to a professional plumbing service later on.

My husband bought a great big rolling tool box for the shop a couple of weeks ago. It is very pretty. I have stolen it for my kitchen because it is too wonderful for the nasty auto shop and needs to be where it can be appreciated.
