Toadstool Geologic Park in the Nebraska panhandle is a mini badlands area filled with these geological formations resembling, well... toadstools.
The big storm on the horizon passed through this area earlier in the afternoon as my wife and I set up camp... good times...
Anyway, after a bit of a break, I should be back to sharing new work a little more regularly again.
This toadstool is commonly known as the ‘fly agaric' or 'fly amanita’ and is found throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It has been unintentionally introduced to many countries in the Southern Hemisphere generally in pine and birch plantations and is now a true cosmopolitan species. This toadstool is classified as poisonous reports of human deaths resulting from its ingestion are extremely rare.
Spotted this toadstool and could just see a face in it so I thought I'd enhance the face for Sliders Sunday.

A night of time lapse and panorama was worth coming back for. After a brief RECON of this area in the day, I decided to return after shooting at Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell. When I arrived at the Toadstools at 2030hrs, the sky was clear, but soon the clouds appeared, and the moon light followed with it. Thus, I got some time lapse of the rolling clouds and panoramas, and created this composite.
Autumn is here and there are lots of Fungi about. This Fly Agaric had, as ever been nibbled but was fairly untouched. The white spots are called warts and are the remnants of the veil which originally enshrouds the emerging Amanita and the distinctive skirt [half way down the stem] is to protect the gills when the young mushroom is more ball shaped. Toadstool is a name used for inedible or poisonous varieties of mushrooms Amanita muscaria have psychoactive compounds [Muscimol and Ibotenic acid] which make them hazardous. Fungi are more closely related to us than to plants as they do not photosynthesise but grow into their food which they ingest using enzymes. They form their own unique kingdom of life along with Yeasts and Molds. Many form symbiotic relationships with trees and other plants, they are crucial to the recycling of organic matter.
I noticed a collection of these small, dainty looking fungi amongst some leaf litter at work. I opted for a shallow depth of field to make sure the subject stood out from the otherwise cluttered backdrop. The dull conditions worked perfectly in accentuating the colours of the fallen leaves.

A week of high temperatures followed by a week of steady rain has finished off the flowers in my area but these came up in a pot during the rain. All I can offer for "flora" this week! The weekend
task will be to replace all the potting mix and bag this for dumping.
Toadstools are just mushrooms which have a bad reputation. Often regarded as poisonous, they were linked to Witchcraft and given a wide berth. Fly Agaric {Amanita muscaria] are probably the ones most people would recognise but few ever see. The white spots can get washed off by rain and the "skirt" visible on the stem of the larger one is distinctive of this family which includes toxic varieties such as the Death Cap and Destroying Angel which are deadly. Others, such as these and the Panther Cap, will cause sickness and hallucinations.
