Bethesda Maryland, July 24 2023. What a day! A little past 12 noon County Executive Marc Elrich signed into law Rent Stabllization as passed 7-4 by the County Council last week. The bill was championed by Council Members Kristin Mink and Will Jawando with Elrich an enthusiastic supporter. The bill offers an overall cap of 6% to most of MoCo's renters with some exceptions. This is much needed relief for the over 130,000 County residents who live in rental housing and pay over 30% of their income to keep a roof over their heads.

As soon as the signing Ceremony was over Jawando rushed down to Sala Thai restaurant in Bethesda and was later joined by Mink and Elrich to support One Fair Wage for tipped workers. Currently MoCo tipped workers are paid just under $4 an hour. The One Fair Wage plan is to start a glide path sooner rather than later to pay all workers including tipsters the County minimum wage of around $15 an hour while still allowing them to receive tips.

Mink, Jawando and Erich joined MoCo Delegates Love, Korman and Charkoudian as waiters for the event. I counted around 60 attendees total, quite a turn out for a mid day work week event.

On the mic Saru Jayaraman, author of One Fair Wage.

Praise

“It is hard to believe that some American workers are legally paid as little as $2.13 an hour. In this passionate cry for justice Saru Jayaraman introduces us to some of those workers as they struggle to make ends meet. Reading this book there were times when I got so angry I had to stop and throw the book across the room.”

—Ruth Reichl, author of My Kitchen Year

“One Fair Wage powerfully reveals the history of the racist, sexist subminimum wage and offers a wake-up call—challenging us to see how the subminimum wage continues to cause needless suffering in the lives of millions of people today, including incarcerated people and disabled workers who are often relegated to the margins of wage and labor debates. This book is not to be missed if you care about economic justice in America.”

—Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow

“One Fair Wage shines a bright light on the complex and cruel web of systematic wage inequity in America—while also outlining the straightforward, concrete solutions necessary to overcome this crisis. Saru Jayaraman is a vital leader fighting for economic justice across our country, and her voice and vision are a road map for all of us.”

—Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal

“A clearly argued . . . case for bringing economic justice to a growing segment of the workforce.”

—Kirkus Reviews

What a dynamic speaker! As I prepare for the upcoming fight over One Fair Wage I'll be reading her book and sharing it with friends.

BlackBerry is pretty much alive and kicking in its battle against Samsung, Apple, and other Chinese makers. This is all thanks to the decision of adopting Android OS. After its DTEK series, it seems the Canadian smartphone maker is working on another all-touchscreen smartphone.

Thanks to serial tipster Evan Blass, we have an idea about how the purported BlackBerry smartphone might look like. Through his Twitter account, Blass has shared an image of what is likely to be called as BlackBerry ‘Motion’. It had been rumored in the past that the company was working on a phone called BlackBerry ‘Krypton,’ and as per Blass, it is the same phone which has now been renamed.

Whether it will be eventually called Krypton or Motion is something we need to keep our patience for, but some specifications of the upcoming phone have been leaked in the past. A CrackBerry report states that the smartphone is likely to feature a full HD (1920x1080p) display. It is speculated to be powered by either Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 or 626 SoC with 4GB of RAM, suggesting it will be an affordable device.

Based on the image, the phone sports a regular form factor, but with evident bezels on the top and bottom. There also appears to be a physical home button on the front with the BlackBerry logo on it. The home button could possibly integrate the fingerprint sensor in it. On the right side are the volume, power buttons, and convenience key. It is expected to be powered by a 4,000mAh battery.

Blass has a proven track record of spilling out authentic details about upcoming products. We also have a reason to believe given the smartphone has already showed up in an FCC listing, suggesting imminent launch. However, since the existence of the smartphone is not officially confirmed by BlackBerry, it is advised to take the information with a grain of salt.

As is the case with recent BlackBerry devices, the Motion smartphone is also likely to run one of the newer versions of Android. With the recent emphasis on the need for devices immune to everyday environmental damage, it is expected the BlackBerry Motion will bring some level of rating for water and dust resistance. In the past, TCL’s global head of sales François Mahieu said that the then-unnamed device would launch sometime in October, and hinted that it would likely be certified for water-resistance.

I know that this and the other red-winged blackbird photo from this date are not great pictures. I felt compelled to share them, however, because of the story attached to them. About ten minutes after I took these two pictures a police officer pulled up and asked what I was taking pictures of. He said that an anonymous call had come in concerned that I might have been taking pictures of children at the park. I told him I was taking pictures of red-winged blackbirds. He asked to see them. I was appalled but I did not forget my rights. I asked him if he had a warrant. He asked my name, which I gave even though I did not have to give that either (I guess I wanted to show I wasn't a complete asshole even though I had the right to refuse this request as well). While he was waiting for the background check I explained I have lived in town and taught at the local high school for ten years. I stated plainly that I have the right to photograph anything from a public side walk. I'm not naive enough to dismiss a concerned parent's worries without any thought. But an anonymous "tip" gets no respect from me. Or better yet, if you see me taking pictures stop me and talk to me. With this situation I am only left to wonder what wickedness lurks in the heart of this anonymous "tipster."
