This bug was sitting on a red tip photinia leaf.
Shot with pentax 28mm @ f/16 reverse mounted to a Canon 300D, 1/250, iso 400, 580ex flash at full (1/1) with stoffen omnibounce and home made macro diffuser (side of plastic 1 gal milk jug - extending from lens to above flash head).

The title of this set is the same as the title of one of my abstract paintings I produced about 27 years ago when I was somewhat landlocked in West Texas and the Beach was not a significant or regular part of my life. But the title was both insightful and prophetic, and now I'm happy to share with you some of my photographs of the days in my life...at the Beach.

This black tip shark was caught on a hook that already had a smaller sharpnose shark on it (notice the small shark in its mouth). This clearly shows that sharks will often prey on other sharks. Sharks of this size are very strong and require focus, strength, and cooperation to safely handle on deck.

Tipping over the summit and down into the town of Tehachapi the Northbound Coast Starlight slows for its journey down the 2.2% grade into California's San Joaquin Valley. Bridge work at the coast has forced Amtrak to detour over the valley and by March 2011 this had become almost a yearly thing.
This male is looking a little worn around the edges. There's a wealth of symbolism attached to butterflies and I'm often taken by just how short their lives are in this stage of the life cycle. Makes you think, well is does me. Again I was thinking to myself how good this would have been if the O-tip had been "perfect" - I wonder where the imperfection lies.
Added this as a comparison to the previous image. I think I prefer this one due to the near straight edge of the forewings.
