Anthocharis cardamines - male.
Ce papillon m'a procuré une belle émotion, lorsque, posé sur une primevère, il a ouvert ses ailes dans les premiers rayons du soleil. A chaque fois qu'il ouvrait ses ailes pour se réchauffer entre deux nuages, c'était une surprise et un émerveillement.
This butterfly gave me a very beautiful emotion, when, placed on a primrose, it opened its wings in the first rays of the sun. Every time he opened his wings to warm himself between two clouds, it was to me like a surprise and a wonder.
The Lesser Purple Emperor Apatura ilia has an 'eye' on the upper side of the upper wing, a less defined pattern on the underside, and bright yellow antennae tips; its look-alike the Purple Emperor Apatura iris does not

Babenhausen 28AUG2019 – Lesser Purple Emperor Butterfly:
This male Apatura ilia form clytie butterfly flew onto my shoe! And as if that were not amazing enough, as it turned, its color changed from 42 shades of ordinary brown to become iridescent blue!
Billions of tiny scales – in 2 types – on the dorsal wing overlap like roof tiles and cover the membrane surface, to the naked eye appearing as dust, producing a brilliant color due to multilayer photonic crystal micro- and nanostructure, transforming a plain brownish hue to a stunning violet-blue, a phenomenon used to attract mates, camouflage, and startle predators: wingtop color changes in the wake of the variation of the incident light angle.
Even though this is the first time I've identified it, the Lesser Purple Emperor butterfly's range, the Palearctic [Palaearctic] (first identified in the 19th century and still used as the basis for zoogeographic classification), is the largest of the eight biogeographic realms on the Earth's surface, stretching across Europe, Asia north of the Himalayan foothills, North Africa, and northern and central parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

Three days before leaving, I got my schedule rearranged to free up time for Joe & me to spend two weeks in and around Babenhausen!
Buff-tip moth, Phalera bucephala. 24 May 2026. Photographed in my garden. Ealing, London, England, UK.
It relies on camouflage to avoid predators and looks for all the world like a twig from a birch tree.

A male Orange-tip on Bluebells. Obviously not from this year, but won't be long before we see these beauties on the wing again!
One of Britain's lovelies t and easy to spot butterflies, the Orange-tip will feed on Cow Parsley, Nettles and many other common wild plants in the UK.
I’m getting ready for some off-road adventuring and I want to take a “solid” doll to play in the mud so I’ve been holding “auditions.” I was playing around doing a few tests to see how quickly I can pose some dolls while getting them to stand and balance on their own without aid. Finally get Both dolls standing on their own AND almost touching each other... and CAT!
I have no idea how she didn’t knock those dolls down, they even stayed standing after she left!
Setting them up if I even BREATHED near the desk one or the other would start to tip over.

Using a cameraphone to view negatives ...
I've been meaning to write this trick up as a mini tutorial, but for now this little example will have to do.
Occassionally I'll be looking at a negative and want to get a quick feel for what it looks like. In the case of the image here, it was brought in by a visitor to the Who Do You Think You Are? Live show where I was working dating old photographs.
The trick is simple: on your cameraphone (or on most 'point and shoot' digital cameras) put the camera in 'negative' mode. This is often found in the 'options' or 'effects' menu. You'll see that the hand and all background objects (including the white sheet of paper it is being viewed against) now look odd, but the image itself is good enough for viewing.
