This photo of the Big Pit and surroundings was on the information board at Furnace Sidings station, just off to right of this view.
You have to have a really good imagination to relate this totally industrial scene to the green and pleasant land in view today! (see below).
The high conical spoil tip at top left overlooks Big Pit. The pit head baths and canteen are just visible to its right. The huge tip in the foreground has been removed completely while the one on the right centre is grassed over.
The ex-LNWR line to Pontypool runs left to right across the view and an industrial tank engine is in steam alongside. This is preserved as the Blaenavon Heritage Railway today.
Friends of mine who look at birds told me about this reserve and that it might have some interesting butterflies, so in the hot sunny weather yesterday I decided to give it a look.
I suspect it will only have common, widespread species from what I saw, though apparently purple hairstreaks are seen there. On my visit there were a few common species around.
These were the most common species seen but it is the first time this year I have photographed them with wings closed showing the beautiful pattern.
This is the first female I have seen this year. It was actually quite windy and not easy to get a clear look at this individual.

Orange Tip - Garden, Hullbridge, Essex. This one or others visited the garden all afternoon. Great to see with the whites as well.
Back Garden - "sods law" - all the days I've spent over the last couple of weeks sitting ready with the camera, only to see these guys fly through without stopping, today I was actually doing something, (I was dismantling an old garden bench for renovation) my hands were covered in WD-40 and rust, when my wife told me an Orange-tip had just landed - a quick dash indoors to wash my hands, and luckily he was still on the dandelion seed head, I managed a couple of shots but as I was moving to a better position he left. Hopefully there will be more chances.
My trip to hopefully see and photograph orange tips was successful even though the sun only remained out for around 40 minutes and there were very few of the cuckoo flowers that are the main attraction at this reserve.
Though not on a flower, I am otherwise very pleased with this photo.
After getting a tip that GU-1 would be taking a big train out of North Grafton, I managed to catch up with them at West Upton yard. After dropping 6 tanks, they continued on to Hopedale with 11 cars. The train is running along Freedom St and will be in the yard soon. The train consisted of 1 covered hopper and 10 spines with containers.

Record id shot was the best we could do for this species. And this was a really difficult shot at that - the kind that makes you drip sweat trying to manage to hold still while aiming into the dark, and between the branches.
And this was the third time we staked out a fresh heliconia flower waiting for the sicklebill. Still, I am grateful that we got a chance to see this very interesting species.

Hydra es animal inmortal de movimientos lentos, pero necesita alimentarse para vivir. Sólo el empleo de un agente inmovilizante y la presencia de algún mecanismo que sujete la presa a los tentáculos, podría conventir en carnívoras a las hidras. La eficacia de las armas de Hydra está probada porque, a pesar de su lentitud, es absolutamente carnívora y puede capturar sin ningún esfuerzo a los pequeños animales que orbitan veloces a su alrededor .
Las sofisticadas armas de Hydra se disparan en un instante, rápidas como un destello. Son los nematocistos. Aparecen dentro de unas estructuras abultadas que se disponen en sus tentáculos. Los nematocistos están constituidos por una cápsula, su contenido amorfo, una tapa y un tubo invertido que puede presentar diferentes formas. Cuando el nematocisto se dispara, el tubo invertido se evagina y el contenido de la cápsula se elimina.
El tubo que se dispara y su extremo, con frecuencia están recubiertos de púas como si se tratase de minúsculos arpones. En este grupo de animales se han descrito hasta 18 tipos de nematocistos diferentes. Los nematocistos aturden, paralizan o matan a las presas o a los enemigos, envuelven el alimento y lo sujetan con los tentáculos, además de realizar otras funciones que no se conocen todavía en detalle, algunos de ellos penetran en la superficie de la presa e inyectan una sustancia tóxica paralizante o mortal para sus víctimas.
Resulta soprendente que los nematocistos parecen tener vida propia, actúan con independencia del sistema nervioso y para ser eficaces deben actuar en el momento oportuno y en la forma más conveniente. Pueden modificar su umbral de respuesta a lo largo de la vida de la Hydra o según cambien las condiciones en su entorno...no es extraño que las hidras tengan ese temperamento pausado y tranquilo, lo confían todo a su armamento, que piensa y decide por ellas, dándoles la vida...armas de Hydra
Hydra es un pólipo solitario, muy conocido en los libros, pero del que existen escasas citas en nuestro país, donde sólo parecen estar presentes dos especies, la de hoy, Hydra vulgaris, que se cita como novedad para el Lago de Sanabria e Hydra viridissima, de menor tamaño y muy característica por su intenso color verde debido a la simbiosis que establece con algas del género Chlorella.
Hydra vulgaris suele estar presente entre las algas, en aguas con carga de materia orgánica. En el Lago de Sanabria su presencia parece estar asociada al deterioro de los fondos, como consecuencia del enriquecimiento en nutrientes por vertidos urbanos, que las administraciones han decidido resolver, persiguiendo y acosando a quienes lo denuncian.
Hydra vulgaris se cita por vez primera para el Lago de Sanabria (Zamora) y ha sido fotografiada a 50 aumentos con la técncia de campo oscuro, y descubierta y recogida por Laura, Mª José y Tomás en los fondos, junto a la Isla de Moras, a 5 metros de profundidad en una muestra recogida el día 19 de abril de 2015 desde el catamarán Helios Sanabria, el primer catamarán construido en el Planeta propulsado por energía eólica y solar.

Yesterday I had a hot tip to find a Barn Owl that lives by the canal across the fields from us. I got up at 6.40 and went to find it ( car temp -9.5) stood in the field for a good hour until the sun came up.. not a bloody sausage !!! Will I try tomorrow??!!
