James. :sigh:
Last year I posted an album of photos from the "Hey Ma" tour in 2008 - the first in 7 years. If you perused the collection, you know the back story and about the long wait to finally see the amazing 7 live + our after show experience. Having released a new album, "The Night Before The Morning After", the boys are on the road again and lucky for me, Toronto was a stop on their tour route.
Prior to purchasing tickets, it was announced that the venue in T.O. was seated (Weird, but welcome after 2008. Standing that long for multiple evenings in a row takes it toll. My feet and knees tell me I'm getting older on a daily basis now)
This time around the band decided since they don't come across the pond very often, they would offer a VIP ticket option which allowed you into the afternoon sound check for 4-5 songs with the opportunity for photo taking. With some super speedy mouse clicking action, I score two VIP front row, just left of center seats.
Sound check was fantastic... only about 60 people, all of us along the stage with cameras clicking while belting out songs, flailing around and shouting requests when requested to do so.
The show was... a total experience rather than just seven guys on stage singing to us. We all became part of the show, so much crowd interaction. Nothing will ever measure up to that first time two years ago but this was a very close second. After wards, the band came out to the lounge/bar area of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and mingled with the 40 or so people left chatting up the night. Jim made a brief appearance, Saul, Mark, Dave and Larry greeted old friends, Andy stood and discussed his new folding bike with us while Tim graciously mingled around the room.
Many thanks lads for making music, touring again and making the trek to Canada. Much love.

Afternoon sound check, a 4-5 song set list, banter with the boys and a rehearsal for an audience/band duo later that night.

James played the O2 Brixton Academy in 20.4.13 The band was on top form and outstanding and all I can say I had an awesome time watching & shooting them for www.drownedinsound.com

Sit Down is a song by English band James, originally released in June 1989 by Rough Trade Records. The song's lyrics were written in late 1988 as a homage to author Doris Lessing and singer Patti Smith, who had inspired the lead singer of James, Tim Booth. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sit_Down_(song)

A story about me:
i have always loved James. "Laid" is the first song i heard from them, and i inmediately fell for it because of its simpleness and how fast is just passes by. When they separated i thought "there goes another band i'll never see". I never considered they would get back together much less play here. When "sometimes" was came in the setlist, tears just started flowing out of my eyes. i remember i went with you.
Laid.

And they rewarded their fans with two of their greatest hits, Laid and Getting Away with It...

James were one of the highlights for me - mixture of classics and new material - they are still indie legends. There was a surreal contrast between the sedate band and Tim Booth’s energetic dancing.

James.
The best band ever (in my books).
I discovered them mid career and was immediately taken by the lyrics of Mr. Tim Booth. Laid, Seven and Whiplash were on constant repeat and although I don't have a voice that should be heard outside the shower, I sang every song like my walls were soundproof. Wanting nothing more than to see them live in concert, I waited for a North American concert listing...it never came. My sister and I discussed flying to Europe for a concert several times but sadly the budget would never allow. In 2001, came the announcement that Tim was leaving James and the band was no longer. Dark days, my friends...dark days. Knowing that somehow life would be different if only we could see the band play live, we sulked for 7 years straight. In 2008, the skies opened and the sun shone down. James was getting back together AND coming to Canada!! After cartwheels and hysterical cheering subsided, we bought tickets to two shows, one in Montreal and the other in Toronto. The venue was general admission so we went early to ensure spots close to the stage. What we didn't count on was FRONT FREAKIN' ROW. I'm talking draped across the stage (for both shows). The show. Was. Amazing. Afterwards we took 7 bottles of maple syrup around back of the venue thinking we might catch a glimpse of the band. Not only were 3 of the 7 hanging around out back but we got to chatting them up and after giving them their bottles of Canadian goodness, were then invited backstage to take pics with the rest of the band. HELLS BELLS. Seriously. A great night... the best and the following night we got to do it all over again. Anyway, it's been one year since that craziness happened and I thought I'd post some of the concert pics in celebration. Shot with only a point and shoot, many are fuzzy and out of focus but all really capture the feeling of the nights.
If you aren't familiar with James, check out "All Out To Get You"...it's perfect.
Afternoon sound check, kinks worked out and final changes made.

You're as tight as a hunter's trap
Hidden well, what are you concealing
Take a drug to set you free
Strange fruit from a forbidden tree
You've got to come down soon
More than a drug is what I need
Need a change of scenery
Need a new life
Say something, say something anything
I've shown you everything
Give me a sign
Say something, say something, anything
Your silence is deafening
Pay me in kind

Tim Booth of James at the Bonus Arena, Hull, 22.03.2019. The band were excellent, the audience slightly more problematic at times. Lots of incessant chatter during the quieter acoustic set that James played as an opener, leading Tim Booth to ask some people to "shut the fuck up".... it didn't really work, they just carried on. Come the main set, lots of the niggling arguments and audience aggro spilled over into a massive fist fight. Tempers frayed, people got thrown out. Welcome to Hull!
