My all time favorite band James at the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City. My brother with their teenagers, my wife and two kids were there. An unforgettable experience. This photo says it all. The band at the background, their singer Tim Booth doing crowdsurfing and that's me, with my younger son in my arms, enjoying the moment. Photo by my older son.
"We’ll take our chances
Take our chances
Burning down the houses
We’re surrounded
Take our chances
Get out of Kansas
Escape
Time to escape
Time to escape
It’s coming over the ridge past canyon trail
Smoke in the air
Woke me up in the night
That life we left behind
Racing, we’re racing down to those beautiful beaches
Put your foot down to the floor
Racing, we’re racing down to those beautiful beaches..."
I've always loved Tim Booth and the way he greets and appreciates his audience is sweet and remarkable too. One can't help but wish the man a very Happy Birthday!

I started feeling a little negative after last week I admit so then I was thinking how there have actually been a few shows where the crowd was so into the show that it ended up changing my perception of the band and making the show much better than I had expected.
Ray Davies of Kinks fame crowds tend to be great but I would say an even better example is James. I adore Tim Booth but I didn't see James live when most people would have considered them to be in their prime form around the early-mid 90s (they never toured upstate NY where I was living anyhow to my knowledge). I have to admit that most of the tracks I love from James are from Millionaires, Laid, Wah Wah, and Gold Mother so nothing really post 2000.
When I saw and finally photographed the band back in 2008 at The Vic Theater in Chicago, I expected it to be just a nostalgic trip and that it might even make me sad. What I soon found is that i seemed like Booth and co. were completely on top of their game and that the crowd couldn't get enough. They played their best material but the fans knew every word by heart and didn't sing it obnoxiously but with a glorious camraderie that really warmed my heart. I entered with caution and left with a buoyancy in my musical soul. Thanks, James fans! You win!
I'd love to hear similar stories you might have about bands you were reluctant to see where the fans really made the show work!
Never forget, the man may have lost all of his hair but not his amazing talent...you know the great crowds that just sing along to all their favorite songs? You know all your favorite songs? They were probably written by Tim Booth AKA James and they are my favorites too.

A night I won't forget. The band put the most amazing show.

Tim Booth performing live in Istanbul at Refresh the Venue. After completing their performance, the crowd started cheering for more...
And they rewarded their fans with two of their greatest hits, Laid and Getting Away with It...
Whenever she's feeling empty
Whenever she's feeling insecure
Whenever her face is frozen
Unable to fake it anymore
Her shadow is always with her
Her shadow could always keep her small
So frightened that he won't love her
She builds up a wall
She's been in disguise forever
She's tried to disguise her stellar views
Much brighter than all this static
Now she's coming through
Don't tell her to turn down
Put on your shades if you can't see
Don't tell her to turn down
Turn up the flame
She's a star
I'm going to try to slowly photograph everything in my collection.
Let's see. I pawned almost everything I owned that was of value, and lost all the rest, from guitars to cars to houses.
But I still have most of my music.
That's probably 20,000 CDs, thousands of pieces of vinyl, and tape of all varieties. Reel-to-reel, 8-track tape, DAT, cassettes, blah blah...
This is going to be a project.
Anyway, here's some cool things, some uncool things, and some valuable things.
Top row, left to right:
Camper Van Beethoven LP. As David Lowrey was signing it, he told me that it was really limited, and they called it the "toothpaste" cover because of the color.
That's an Aerosmith "Done With Mirrors" promo signed by all members in reflective Sharpie. Is it just me, or does it always look like Joe Perry signs his name with the pen in his mouth? Or, it always looks like a 7 year old signed it. My favorite guitarist of all time.
Bon Jovi. I know, I know. I've never been a fan, but that's an early promotional copy that was supposed to be the cover of the record, and then the record company got scared that the family chain stores wouldn't carry it, so they made it into that bad waterdrop cover. It's signed by Jon Bon.
Next level: A rare Church 12" signed by everyone but the drummer.
A great Tony Bennett album that I've had for decades, signed by the man himself.
Against the wall on the right, it's my favorite Matthew Sweet songs on a promo-only 12". I used to bug him every time I saw him, asking him when these beautiful demo b-sides would be released on CD. They finally were.
Next level:
Afghan Whigs promo signed by John Curley.
Verve gatefold beauty signed by all! You know what's sad? I used to have 2 or 3 signed copies of "A Storm In Heaven" and 3 or 4 copies of "Voyager", the vaguely authorized live LP, printed in low numbers, on colored vinyl, signed by the whole band. I think I sold a signed one, and an unsigned one, and certainly didn't make the money they were worth, because I sold them in the late 90s.
Ebay is much bigger now and the Verve have come and gone and come and whatever, and a gorgeous signed copy of the Voyager vinyl would fetch me lotsa dough. I mean Jesus, there are a couple of copies on eBay right now, unsigned, priced well over $200.
Anywho-way, for the Verve fans out there, I want to describe this item because it's one of the coolest signed things I have.
It's a sexy vinyl copy of "A Storm In Heaven". A UK LP, unplayed and near minty, with a gatefold cover filled with amazing photographs. On the front, the full band, Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Peter Salisbury and Simon Jones have signed their names in reflective gold Sharpie.
A little bit of artwork, in the way of many dots, helps to liven up the front cover.
On the inside, they wrote "Barry" and drew an arrow on his thigh, pointing up to his torso, so I'd know the name of the "model" in the photograph.
The photos were taken by Michael Spencer Jones following sleeve concept, design and art direction by Brian Cannon.
On the back cover in the bottom right hand corner, the band was kind enough to write
"Brian's mum's next dore neighbour", so I'd know who the older chap was amongst the tombstones. The most alarming thing about everything they wrote on my album was the fact that the word "door" was misspelled.
Last row:
First Ramones LP (orig. 76 issue) signed by Johnny and Joey.
Mister Rogers album signed by everyone from the Loud Family
(yeah, Scott Miller, Game Theory)
and James album signed by
Tim Booth.
Along with the Verve vinyl, I have a Liz Phair album that is competing for the
same prize in the category of
Albums That I've Had Signed By A Star Who Had Time To Waste, So There's A Lot Of Extra Things Besides Just A Signature.
I think Liz is in another photograph, so I'll describe hers there.

Thanks to everyone who helped MAG raise £5,851.96p at V Festival, Weston Park last weekend!
For the eighth year running, MAG ran the Artists' Bar backstage at the festival - the money this raised will go towards saving lives and building futures in conflict-affected communities worldwide.
We also got 25 "Clear Landmines Destroy Weapons" t-shirts signed by stars, for the Music Beats Mines auction later this year.
Pictured (clockwise from top left): Everything Everything, Tom Odell, Lena Headey, Eddie Izzard, Stephen Graham, Katy B, some of the MAG team & Tim Booth.
