I know tilt and shift lenses are not to everyones taste, but they bring a whole new dimension to street photography, sometimes you don't want to see the entire picture, your brain wants to fill in the gaps, your imagination wants to feed off the mystery and for me as a photographer my artistic side is often driven to produce images that challenge myself to replicate pictures that I used to imagine in my head as a youngster before my adult head took over and forced me to conform to the norm of what you see is what you get.....so that's a little more of my waffle, which as always really means we generally forget the ability to see as we did as a child, so go on let loose, it's still in there......waffle over.
Noted that Thomas was at Butterley for three days between Xmas and New Year but everyday was horrible weather wise (apart from Monday but I was otherwise engaged).
Yesterday was the last chance to go and get some photos of what could be the best tilt/shift subject ever. Unfortunately, the weather conditions and lighting are completely wrong for it to be convincing but I was standing in the cold for ages so I'm bloody well going to upload some shots - even if they aren't great. I'll wait until summer when he's back again and do better next time! (where have I heard that before!!!)
I think they look quite nice and wintery though!
I am trying to get some perspective in my life at the moment.
I went to visit a friend in Hospital and thought I would take a short cut home. My shortcut took me through a cemetery. Well, it was a cemetery, but there was also a part that had been reserved for children. And my limited experience of grief had not prepared me for what was on display. Beautiful arrangements of flowers and teddies and toys and windmills and chimes and messages. I am not seeking to offend anyone. Consider this: if you think your life is bad, please think of what these parents and their children have gone through. So much love, and so much grief.
Is a map enough to find one's way?
Maps have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Red dots in photographs for many years, too. Tilt-and-shift lenses ever since I learned about their existence. SOOC.

I actually posted a rather darker version of this image. Sadly, flickr's handling of the JPG bought a further aspect of compression and the overall image was muddy. This is the 'fixed for the Internet' version. The original as seen on this monitor was rather lovely and subtle. Taken after a deluge of thunder and hail stones. At the time I was scouting for levitation backgrounds.

I present to you the District of Columbia. The city that is always sleeping. Fortunately I get to drive by the pretty side - the north-west side - of Washington D.C. every day on my way home from work. It is also fortunate for you and the aesthetic quality of this photo project. The view is much different from the south-east side of the city. This particular photo was taken from a scenic overlook along the northbound lane of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. While the views are relatively scenic I found myself focused on a much different sight while I was parked there. Some back story is required. When I pulled into this spot it was sometime around nine in the evening. There were no cars in the small lot and there was a substantial amount of wet stuff falling from the sky. This moment was not the prime opportunity to take a gander at the sights the overlook had to offer. Apparently this doesn't bother people. As I stood there in the rain trying to set up my camera and tripod another car pulled into the lot. Between the end of the lot and the spot my car was parked in there were approximately eight other parking spots available. This particular dodo decided the sport directly adjacent to mine was the most supreme real estate. Now feeling a little awkward I went about my business. I took a few photos. I glanced at the car next to me. I checked the light and the framing. I glanced at the car next to me. I checked the focus. I glanced at the car next to me. I took a few more photos. The car next to me didn't move. Nobody inside moved. The door did not open. There wasn't even any music to be heard from within. All I could see was the dark outline of a human body in the driver's seat. My mind wandered as it usually does. I imagined a man with looks similar to Dolemite smoking a cigarette while sitting in silence. Secretly he was watching me. Secretly he was dreaming about putting his Hush Puppies in uncomfortable places on my person. I began packing up my stuff. As I hurried along another car pulled in and parked directly next to the first car. Not one of the other empty spots. The spot directly next to it. I was officially creeped out. I abandoned the task of packing my camera gear properly and opted for throwing it into the back of my car and speeding out of the lot.
