Woodbridge has had a tide mill as far back as 1170 when a mill was owned by the Augustinian Priors for around 350 years until it was confiscated by Henry VIII. The mill remained in royal ownership for many years as well as other private owners.
The present day mill was built in 1793 on the site of the previous mills although by the 1950s it had become the last working tide mill in the country. It finally closed down in 1957 but in 1968 it was saved/fully restored and opened to the public in 1973. More recently even more restoration work has been carried out and the mill is back in use as a fully working tide mill once again.
