Sad, but not too bad: Leo has thyroid disease. I realised that he was lazy the last weeks, instead of running in front of me he plods behind me, at the far end of the leash. He often took a nap and seemed to have less energy. So I visited the vet with him, made a blood analysis with special eye on thyroid. And the analysis said: normally the T-Value has to be between 1-4 and Leo had 0,7. That was the reason why he was so lazy, bored of everything and I feared to loose him by such a young age. Now he gets medication to support his thyroid and helps him to feel more powerfull, get more energy. If you think your animal does not behave as usual please do yourself and your animal the favour and visit the vet. KYSTE DU TRACTUS THYREOGLOSSE
Définition:
Reliquats du tractus thyréoglosse (descente de la thyroïde), 50% avant à l'age de 10 ans, 65% avant 20 ans
Étiologie:
Absence de fermeture du canal thyréoglosse au moment de la descente de la thyroïde dans la 4ème semaine de la vie fœtale
Signes cliniques :
masse cervicale médiane, rénitente, élastique, sous ou en avant de l'os hyoïde, mobile à la déglutition , taille variable, sensation de masse , parfois fistule cutanée. le diagnostique est fait par interrogatoire, examen clinique, imagerie .
Diagnostic différentiel :
1. Thyroïde ectopique
2. Kyste dermoïde
3. Tumeur thyroïdienne
4. Adénopathie inflammatoire ou maligne
Examens complémentaires :
1. Biopsie du kyste : étude anatomie pathologique le kyste entouré d'un épithélium stratifié ou pseudo-stratifié avec des cellules ciliées. Présence de tissu thyroïdien dans 10 à 45% des kystes
2. Échographie cervicale
3. Scintigraphie thyroïdienne pour éliminer une ectopie
Traitement : Hospitalisation de courte durée d'environ 3 jours, ablation des fils au 8ème jour.
1. Seule la chirurgie est curatrice: la résection emporte le kyste, le corps de l'os hyoïde et le trajet fistuleux jusqu'à la base de langue (excision triangulaire).
2. Si le kyste est surinfecté, un traitement médical (antibiotiques, anti-inflammatoires) est d'abord institué. En cas de collection, un drainage est possible.
3. Antibiotiques si surinfection, puis chirurgie
Complications:
1. Surinfection
2. Fistulisation à la peau
3. Dégénérescence maligne: exceptionnelle
The community celebrated the life of Virginia Beach Fire Department Capt. Matthew "Chevy" Chiaverotti with a procession, including a stop at Station 7 in Town Center, where Chiaverotti worked as captain.
He died on April 17 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Loved ones and longtime colleagues honored Chiaverotti during a service at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Chiaverotti spent more than 20 years working as a firefighter in Virginia Beach. Fire Chief Ken Pravetz described him as a natural-born leader with a "heart of gold."
Additionally, Chiaverotti served as a FEMA search team manager with Virginia Task Force 2. He deployed to catastrophes places like Haiti, Puerto Rico and Florida.
Back in 2012, he spent hours at the scene of the military jet crash known as the "Good Friday Miracle."
No one can say for sure whether that caused his illness, but a hazardous mix of toxins filled the air and the ground that day.
Firefighters who are diagnosed with certain presumptive cancers can receive compensation. Earlier this year, thyroid and bladder cancers joined the list of cancers eligible for benefits. The list already included leukemia, pancreatic, prostate, rectal, throat, ovarian, breast, colon, brain, or testicular cancer.

The Postcard
A postcard that was published by Rotary Photo of London EC. On the back of the card they state:
'This is a real photograph
of a British child.'
The card was posted in Levenshulme, Manchester using a ½d. stamp on Saturday the 28th. July 1917. It was sent to:
Miss Elsie Hallam,
43, Oakfield Street,
Altrincham,
Cheshire.
The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"27th. July 1917.
Dear Elsie,
Best wishes for a Very
Happy Birthday & Many
Happy Returns.
Better late than never.
Love from Phyllis."
The Shelling of a Dutch Passenger Ship
So what else happened on the day that the card was written?
Well, on Friday the 27th. July 1917, the Dutch steam passenger ship Batavier II was shelled and sunk by Royal Navy submarine HMS E55 in the North Sea.
It was shelled because it was believed to be under German control. The crew of the Batavier II were able to steer the ship to Dutch waters before abandoning it.
Georges Guynemer
Also on that day, the French fighter pilot Georges Guynemer became the first French ace to score his 50th. victory, by shooting down a German DFW aircraft using a SPAD fighter plane.
Bourvil
The 27th. July 1917 also marked the birth, in Prétot-Vicquemare, France, of the French actor Bourvil.
Bourvil was known for his comedic roles in The Sucker and La Grande Vadrouille. He died in 1970.
John Cunningham
The day also marked the birth in Croydon of John Cunningham.
John was a British air force officer, who commanded No. 85 Squadron during World War II.
During the war, he was nicknamed 'Cat's Eyes' by the British press in order to explain his success and to avoid communicating the existence of airborne radar to the Germans.
John, was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Order, Silver Star and Order of the British Empire.

In his retirement, Cunningham devoted himself to aviation affairs of a charitable nature while building a retirement fund for himself. In 1980, he was appointed Chairman of the Sir Geoffrey de Havilland Flying Foundation, a charity to help young people with aspirations in aviation.
Over a number of years, former senior RAF officers had been attracted to investing in Lloyd's of London as a Lloyd's 'name'. Cunningham's commitment was one of unlimited liability, and so when Lloyd's ran into financial difficulty in 1988, he was faced with enormous debts.
He was therefore forced to live frugally until the end of his life. Having never married, John Cunningham died a bachelor aged 84 on the 21st. July 2002 in Welwyn Garden City.
Emil Theodor Kocher
The 27th. July 1917 also marked the death of Emil Theodor Kocher.
Emil, who was born on the 25th. August 1841, was a Swiss physician and medical researcher who received the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in the physiology, pathology and surgery of the thyroid.
Among his many accomplishments are the introduction and promotion of aseptic surgery and scientific methods in surgery, specifically reducing the mortality of thyroidectomies below 1% in his operations.
Kocher was the first Swiss citizen and first surgeon to ever receive a Nobel Prize in Medicine. He was considered a pioneer and leader in the field of surgery in his time.

On the evening of the 23rd. July 1917, Emil was called into the Inselspital in Bern for an emergency.
Kocher executed the surgery, but afterwards felt unwell and went to bed, working on scientific notes. He then fell unconscious and died on the 27th. July 1917.
