Five weeks after surgery; still rather swollen inside and out & the right side (left side in this pic) is a bit more raised than I'd like, but the scar continues to heal relatively well. 11/4/10

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck. The thyroid secretes several hormones, collectively called thyroid hormones. The main hormone is thyroxin, also called T4. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature. Thyroid hormone controls many activities in our body. Depending on how much or how little hormone your thyroid makes, you may often feel restless or tired, or you may lose or gain weight. Thyroid is a part of an intricate network of glands called the endocrine system and is responsible for coordinating many of our body’s activities. Four common disorders of the thyroid are Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease, goitre, and thyroid nodules. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is overactive. It produces too much of its hormone. ‘Graves’ disease’ is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Another shot of George after his operation to remove his thyroid glands as they were over-active.
Fortunately one was clearly separated from his parathyroid, so this wasn't damaged during the removal, which is a potential complication and leaves cats deficient in Calcium which is bad as its required for muscle contraction. Should these drop too low (and they will often plumit suddenly) then the heart has trouble pumping blood round the body (it is after all one large piece of muscle).
George's calcium levels have been assessed twice and they appear within the normal range. Got to keep a close eye on him overnight and he's popping back tomorrow for another quick check.

My wife just had her second surgery to treat thryoid cancer in just over a year. She has never looked more beautiful to me than when they were wheeling her back to her room after surgery and she waved as us with both hands. You go girl. I love you.
6 weeks after surgery; I started using calendula oil on the scar & it has healed up even more nicely since I began doing so; you can see that the right side (left side in this pic) isn't nearly as raised as it was a week ago. Still swollen, but the golf ball feeling in my throat is gradually getting smaller. 11/12/10
