June 17, 2009 Part of my daily routine. One a day, not the whole handful. Although lately it feels like my dosage might not be right and maybe I need more. I made an appointment with a new doctor because my other doctor makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, but I can't get in for six weeks. Who knows, maybe I'm just a moody gal. Psammoma bodies are round, laminated, calcified structures commonly found in certain types of tumors and pathological conditions. They are formed by the deposition of calcium on necrotic cells or degenerative debris, which then take on a concentric, layered appearance. They are most commonly found in papillary thyroid carcinoma, serous papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary, meningioma, papillary renal cell carcinoma and, endometrial adenocarcinoma but may be found in a variety of other neoplasms. While their presence suggests certain cancers, they are not specific to any single condition and can be seen in a variety of neoplasms.

KYSTE DU TRACTUS THYREOGLOSSE
Définition:
Reliquats du tractus thyréoglosse (descente de la thyroïde), 50% avant à l'age de 10 ans, 65% avant 20 ans
Étiologie:
Absence de fermeture du canal thyréoglosse au moment de la descente de la thyroïde dans la 4ème semaine de la vie fœtale
Signes cliniques :
masse cervicale médiane, rénitente, élastique, sous ou en avant de l'os hyoïde, mobile à la déglutition , taille variable, sensation de masse , parfois fistule cutanée. le diagnostique est fait par interrogatoire, examen clinique, imagerie .
Diagnostic différentiel :
1. Thyroïde ectopique
2. Kyste dermoïde
3. Tumeur thyroïdienne
4. Adénopathie inflammatoire ou maligne
Examens complémentaires :
1. Biopsie du kyste : étude anatomie pathologique le kyste entouré d'un épithélium stratifié ou pseudo-stratifié avec des cellules ciliées. Présence de tissu thyroïdien dans 10 à 45% des kystes
2. Échographie cervicale
3. Scintigraphie thyroïdienne pour éliminer une ectopie
Traitement : Hospitalisation de courte durée d'environ 3 jours, ablation des fils au 8ème jour.
1. Seule la chirurgie est curatrice: la résection emporte le kyste, le corps de l'os hyoïde et le trajet fistuleux jusqu'à la base de langue (excision triangulaire).
2. Si le kyste est surinfecté, un traitement médical (antibiotiques, anti-inflammatoires) est d'abord institué. En cas de collection, un drainage est possible.
3. Antibiotiques si surinfection, puis chirurgie
Complications:
1. Surinfection
2. Fistulisation à la peau
3. Dégénérescence maligne: exceptionnelle

I did want to give an update @ Mom...the doctors still plan to remove her thyroid by the end of the month. They're not terribly worried despite its being cancer (!), but it's a very slow-growth cancer and apparently this is all right. I suppose that much as we dislike it, if they're waiting in this day and age of malpractice lawsuits, they are right. Thanks for your prayers!
Poor Ben! Much as I love the heat and humidity, Ben is understandably not much of a fan, despite a shaved tummy (AKA Collie A/C). It's been in the 90s all week, and when you factor the humidity in, it was probably quite a bit higher.
Ben wasn't at all interested in walking during the day, once the sun had come up, so we mostly just strolled about the yard while I pulled weeds, pruned plants, and made sure everything had sufficient water. Today it was only 80 degrees or so at the time of our morning walk, so we actually DID walk, but the air was so thick it really was like walking through lukewarm soup! Yuck. To say nothing of the fact that Ben's fur gets all frizzy and goofy-looking. Time for a leave-in conditioner! ;)
Thankfully, it rained most of the afternoon, and though it's still quite humid, it's about 20 degrees cooler. Ben is at least not so reluctant to leave the house!

Thyroid
Studies show a correlation between thyroid function and Testosterone levels, with both needed to effectively regulate the same processes in the body. Thyroid hormones rely on Testosterone to do the work of protein synthesis, a very complex process that takes place at a cellular level to build proteins. This supports the build-up of muscle mass and can regulate the metabolism of fat.
A low level of Testosterone can impact muscle growth and unnecessary weight gain. Testosterone therapy may be an effective treatment, but, first one must determine that the thyroid and is functioning as it should. If not, hormone replacement therapy can help, but only under the supervision of a licensed, experienced physician like Dr. Berman.

Kitty is my 22 year old hyper thyroid uncontrollable bowel arthritic senial kidney issue plagued cat. She was a stray and my parents were forced to take her in before i was born because the owner didn't want her anymore, and their method of getting rid of her was to just throw her out the house. Little did my parents know, she was also pregnant when she joined us so we ended up going from no cats to 5 cats.
She's a large part of my family, almost like a crazy old aunt, and although she's definately not there in the head anymore she still potters around happy as ever :)
