I always love getting away and photographing John Muir Country--Yosemite, Kings Canyon & Sequoia in California I also shot it all with the Sony A7r as well as the Nikon D810 and the wonderful Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens as well as the new Tamron AFA012N700 15-30 mm f/2.8-Di VC Wide-Angle Lens for Nikon F (FX) Cameras and the Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens !

Long story short, you can't go wrong!
The Sony A7r and the Nikon D810 have the same sensor! While the D810 saves the RAW in 14bit lossless compressed (or uncompressed0, the A7r performs a bit of lossy compression, which I have never noticed, but which some say they have!
At any rate, I am super excited for the Nikon's next camera as well as for the recently released Sony A7rII Mirrorless Digital Camera which I now own! Some highlights include a 42 MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor, a
BIONZ X Image Processor,
Internal UHD 4K Video & S-Log2 Gamma, and a
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization system! You can see some of my fine art photos from the amazing camera in my photostream, with many more to come!
And I have a feeling that Nikon will be releasing something epic soon--a 50mp+ camera with awesome dynamic range!
An important thing to remember is that even though pixel sizes keep getting smaller and smaller, the technology is advancing, so the smaller pixels are more efficient at collecting light. For instance, the Sony A7RII is back-illuminated which allows more photons to hit the sensor. Semiconductor technology is always advancing, so the brilliant engineers are always improving the signal/noise ratio. Far higher pixel counts, as well as better dynamic ranger, are thus not only possible, but the future!
Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! I worked on phototranistors and photodiodes as well as an artificial retina for the blind. :)

I get asked a lot of questions (I love questions--ask away!), and one of the more common ones is "What kind of camera shoul I buy?" Begin with anything, and then, when it falls short of the beauty you are trying to capture, invest in a new one! The important thing is to think of it as buying not something for yourself, but a gift for the world, who will witness all the magnificent photos you shoot with it! Then, the next most important thing to do is to shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot! For each and every epic shot on an awesome camera helps justify its cost! I shoot with the awesome Nikon D810, Sony A7R, and now the Sony A7RII! And in the long run, the cost of the camera is a very small entity, when conpared to the cost of life and time. So buy a great camera, and then give the gift of epic photography to the world! View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! This second thunderstorm came in to the northwest of the tornadic storm near Chadron, Nebraska (July 6, 2016). It initially showed some decent rotation in the wall cloud and hints toward producing a funnel, but it soon became rain-wrapped and lost much of its inflow. It dropped rain in Chadron.

Furnas County, heading south via Hwy 283 . This storm definitely picked up steam, and it was growing. Building cells were forming to the north, northwest.
She was bound to get a warning issued, as I was caught up in the 60+ mph outbound wind-flow from the frontal boundary just south of Arapahoe Nebraska.
Packed up the gear and headed south to the Kansas / Nebraska Boarder to capture some more storm chasing Eye Candy!

Cloud to cloud lightning thunderstorm combustion striking in the sky over a country lake north east of Longmont Colorado and Boulder County. This is in SW Weld County. It wasn't exactly Scappare's maiden voyage when we took her from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu - she has seen quite a bit more in her 30+ years that took her rom the US West coast through the Pacific islands to Singapore. But it was our maiden voyage with her, and it was fantastic.
We took off from Singapore around 11 am after spending a weekend preparing her, stocking up on food and diesel. Good thing the brand new life fell into the water when we were still moored in Pungol....we recovered it and mounted it slightly better...After port clearance we were off through heavy container ship traffic and passed the Anambas Islands (part of the Riau Islands) at night, three of us exhausted from sea sickness and taking turns at the helm.
We left Bunguran Island starboard - having sailed through the Riau Islands - we later learned that this is pirate territory...
After that we didn's see land for a while! take a look at the GPS track log! The incident that made us deviate from the original path south was a encounter at midnight: A rather large ship, lit like a christmas tree, called us on VHF and directed their spotlight at us: "This is Tecnic Nirvana calling the vessel on course 156 degrees doing 5.6 knots" - oops? Thats us...."Alter your course 20 degrees to starboard!" - Sure, why argue with this guy. - "I am doing seismic research and have a 9 km tow" - OK, now thats a good reason...not messing around with him, I guess...
So we did alter our course, as you can see, and tried to look out for whatever he was towing. Spotted something far away at the horizon...and aimed for it. Well, it was an oil rig as big as Spaceship Enterprise. The tow was nowwhere to be seen and calling Technik Nirvana again wasn't much help: The new shift had now idea who we were and what we wanted.
What else happened in 7 days: The engine overheated and we had to switch it off. Found a leaking cooling hose at 2 am in the morning, and: replaced it! This boat has every spare part you can think of!
A bit closer to KK, we changed the primary andsecondary fuel filter, because the engine wouldn't start again. Learned a lot.
Getting to KK was exciting: Looking at the skyline of KK, a peacful and nice evening with half the crew on the foredeck with a drink we were caught by a really heavy and mean thunderstorm with horizontal rain and heavy gusts. The skyline disappeared and including the outlying islands we were about to pass. Sticking to the GPS track we hoped the engine wouldn's stop and motored into Sutera Harbor at 1am. Good for us, because the marina manager told us the next morning, that had we arrived during office hours we would have had to anchor out in the bay - no space inside.
This strange looking thunderstorm was over Prescott, Az on August 17, 2014. This was taken near the Prescott High School. At first the column was vertical, then it changed to this shape. It looks very much like the smoke column from a forest fire.
Shows some of the fairly distinct cyclonic structure of the storm. Not long after this, I could barely see that building through the torrential rain.

While most thunderstorms move with the mean wind flow through the layer of the troposphere that they occupy, vertical wind shear causes a deviation in their course at a right angle to the wind shear direction.
