We were nearing the end of our stay in Philly, and even though we had just stuffed ourselves with a multiple-course dinner with Kei's family for Ray's birthday (and had sizable bowls of pho only a few hours before that), we couldn't leave town without a visit to the epicenter of cheesesteaks.
Pat's. Geno's. Cheesesteak throwdown.
Visually, you have to love the contrast:
Pat's, the original, mantaining its homey, hole-in-the-wall appearance.
Geno's, the flashy competitor, with assault-on-your-retinas neon lights that illuminate the entire block, including the Pat's storefront. It's easy to be over the top, but Geno's is on its own level. Sucking up electricity while they hawk artery-clogging meals. Demanding people order in english with a sign featuring an American flag and a bald eagle. It's more than just a cheesesteak joint, it's damn near satire.
