At least I think he's separating the grain from the stalks. And I'm pretty sure it's rice.
From Elstner Hilton's album of photographs he took in Japan between 1914 and 1918.
Any details ? Make, location & date unknown, can anyone help? Scanned from an original slide now in my collection.
Threshing is the process of beating paddy plants in order to separate the rice seeds or grains from the straw. The farmer holds the crop by the sheaves and beats it against a slatted bamboo, wooden platform, or any other hard object such as a steel oil drum. More from this series can be view HERE.

In September 1966, a local farmer at Brafield who owned a threshing box decided to get a traction engine in to thresh the corn. Here we see this historic process in operation using a Fowler traction engine. copyright John Evans, no unauthorised copying or use.

Taken at the Gorman Heritage Farm in Cincinnati. This modest urban farm lies in Evendale, just a few miles from downtown Cincinnati, and provides a friendly and delightful haven of flora and fauna. This rather stark image belies it's tranquility. More pastural images to follow. www.gormanfarm.org/
