It was time to store food and wood for long winter to follow soon when temperature usually hovers between minus 20 to minus 40 degree Celsius….usually the entire Ladakhi family is involved in toiling process of traditional threshing of barley and other crops in Autumn....while half a dozen of Yaks move in a circular path, the members of the family sing aloud and collect separated grains from the floor....I found it so interesting and inspiring as truly the process binds it all into oneness and the rhythm of unity that we miss in modern society...taken in a small hamlet, Phey, in Zanskar valley, Ladakh Himalayas, India
Ethiopian way of threshing. It is hard work, but so picturesque!
PS. No need to adjust your screens. It is indeed a colour photo... I was very tempted to post in B&W, but the colour version is actually a bit better. IMHO.
My father was a keen Box Brownie photographer when he was a boy in the bush in central western New South Wales, Australia. This is a threshing machine powered by a belt from a tractor PTO. Unfortunately there was no details of where this was on the back of the print.
Paddy Threshing - Threshing is the process of loosening the edible part of grain (or other crop) from the husks and straw to which it is attached. It is part of harvesting, the process of collecting the mature crop from the field. It includes cutting, hauling, threshing, cleaning and optionally field drying and stacking or piling.
The common method for manual threshing is hand beating against an object, treading, or by holding the crop against a rotating drum with spikes or rasp bars.
Hand beating methods are normally used for threshing rice that easily shatters.

....for harvest. My Grandfather's threshing machine sits in our yard, retired after many years of use. The long drive belt still wrapped on the pulley and waiting. Dad used the machine for years and we helped him, I could line the tractor up, back up so the belt was tight enough and start it up :) It doesn't seem very long ago.
