Over 70 area realtors met with leaders from School Districts 58, 60, 61, 66, 68 and 99 at the third annual Realtor Breakfast on March 19, 2019. The purpose of the event is to provide realtors with the information they need to help show how our community is a good investment.

Third Way hosted a breakfast discussion on workforce development and modern manufacturing, and ways Congress can lead us on a path forward to improve our skills training programs and ultimately achieve a stronger manufacturing workforce. At Third Thursday: Science of Art, we discovered the intersection of science and art!

We took in live music from SCRNS and Greg Grease, chatted chemistry and art conservation in “Restoring a Masterwork III," made microscopic paintings with the Science Museum of Minnesota, got technical with the art of 3D scanning and printing, and explored the science of natural wonder with the Bell Museum of Natural History in “Shells: Magic and Science."

Check out upcoming Third Thursdays.

On my third visit to nearby Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, morning (in the rain and cold), noon (cold), and late afternoon (daylight fading and magical) to the location where three Common Redpoll had been seen the two previous days, I heard and saw a few Black-capped Chickadee fly in, and among them I caught sight of two Common Redpoll. I almost couldn't believe it when looking at their distinct field marks, what else could they be? How positively fun to be there all by myself with the birds, quickly trying for doc shots and photos. All my photos are poor, but each tells a different story and reveals different plumage characteristics and included three on my eBird checklist ebird.org/checklist/S100524063

Common Redpoll is a rarity here, out of its winter range, although shown to occur as far as Portland on the extended dotted blue line in Nat Geo, p. 444.

If you've read this far, perhaps you're an eBird user/contributor, or future eBird contributor. eBird is citizen science and developed through Cornell University. Recently when at Sauvie Island viewing birds through my scope, I was asked all sorts of questions, and I was able to share eBird and my encouragement: go to eBird. Get lost in it, go down the rabbit holes. There is a wealth of information there. Including vast information about the Common Redpoll, the latest addition to my life list. ebird.org My ornithology instructor, Joe Morlan, imparted this wisdom: "when you share and contribute to eBird, your data will live on."

Taken on the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie's Pasture North. This was the first time I've seen the preserve since Hurricane Harvey. I had permission from preserve manager Colleen Simpson to scout the preserve for the upcoming Port Aransas Christmas Bird Count.

The hurricane caused 3 new cuts to be formed in the wall along the ship channel. This was the southernmost one, just north of Piper's Channel.
