â–¶ "The western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) is a great ape found in Africa, one of two species of the hominine genus Gorilla. Large and robust with males weighing around 168 kilograms (370 lb), the species is found in a region of midwest Africa, geographically isolated from the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei).
☞ Two subspecies of western gorilla are recognised: the western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is found in most of West Africa; while the Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) is limited to a smaller range in the north at the border of Cameroon and Nigeria.
☞ The World Conservation Union lists the Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) as critically endangered, the most severe designation next to global extinction. The Ebola virus might be depleting western gorilla populations to a point where their recovery might become impossible, and the virus reduced populations in protected areas by 33% from 1992 to 2007, which may be equal to a decline of 45% for a period of just 20 years spanning 1992 to 2011. Poaching, commercial logging and civil wars in the countries that compose the western gorillas' habitat are also threats. Furthermore, reproductive rates are very low, with a maximum intrinsic rate of increase of about 3% and the high levels of decline from hunting and disease-induced mortality have caused declines in population of more than 60% over the last 20 to 25 years."

The war in Ukraine, violent as it is on the ground, has also produced elsewhere a most confrontational mindset. Each side is generating its own "narrative" with its related truth claims. Their thought police would accuse anybody of heresy who dared to look at the other narrative. These attempts at silencing more nuanced ways of thinking must be resisted. As for me, living in the UK with its very outspoken support for Ukraine, some reminders may be in order. 1. Putin's regime is the enemy, not the Russian people. 2. It is not Tolstoi or Shostakovich we have issues with. 3. Thinking about a possible postwar order must be allowed if it helps to prevent a global or nuclear confrontation.

The bayou does have some unique characters on it and you never know what you might encounter. I am certain that the birds on the bayou sit around the living room in the evening and discuss the character that come paddling by in the kayaks and canoes. This Great Egret was trying to decide as to whether it stayed or headed to some higher limbs above the bayou in order to escape that pesky clown in the canoe. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

Michelle is the quiet one in my family. Still water runs deep with this one. When I met Michelle, she was 2 years old, and was the cutest little thing you ever saw! She was always shy, but not timid, if that makes any sense. Mostly, she just seemed to prefer to absorb what was going on around her, and seemed content to keep her thoughts to herself most of the time. She has a definite serenity about her that is magnetic!
Michelle is my niece by marriage, and now that her mother and my brother are divorced, we don't see much of each other. Divorce strains more than just the relationships in the immediate family; it breaks apart many bonds. It's a sad thing.
Michelle is also a gifted photographer, having been taught by her father, who is one of Daytona's top bridal photographers. Rather than studying photography, though, she made a wise choice to pursue a nursing career. Actually, with her smarts, Michelle could easily become a doctor! (Don't know if that mind of hers is going there, but I wouldn't be surprised!) Whatever she chooses to do, I'm sure she'll do well. I'm very proud of her.
