From the Big Trip 3D slide archives - 2004.
They say small things amuse small minds. Well, in Port Hedland in the far north of Western Australia there were instead many big things to amuse us. One in particular was this enormous iron ore train that makes the regular journey from the Mount Newman mine down to Port Hedland where it is loaded on enormous ships and exported around the world, with much of it heading for places like South Korea and returning to us in the form of Hyundais and Kias.
This train had around 300 wagons and from memory it was hauled by three pairs of locomotives spaced out along the train's length. It measured at around 3.2 kilometres and took nearly 15 minutes to slowly rumble past. I was amused to think that if it were in Melbourne's suburban rail network, there are places where it would almost have spanned 4 stations at once! The record for one of these trains is a whopping 7.2 kilometres long! I was lucky to just manage to squeeze the whole train in the view as it headed around the bend in the distance.
It was not the prettiest town in Australia, and this was certainly not the most scenic view, but we both enjoyed seeing these big things in and around Port Hedland. Also very big were the ships in the harbour, the tides, the salt mounds and the summer temperatures (up to 49 degrees C.)

Moss! Drippy moss! Such delicate, green and beautiful moss. I found this little splotch of fun in the Portland Arboretum on a walk with my mom yesterday. It was a nice change from the dry, bright cold of Nevada.
I love the manual focus on my new camera. You can choose out such pretty little details and mess around for hours without noticing.
