Early inspiration for the concept of the 1988 cult classic, They Live - maybe?

"Possession" (1983) and "They Live" (1988), from the waning days of the drive-in era, via for renters' attention with vivid colorful cover art.

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." In the late 80s Rowdy Roddy Piper smashed all kinds of coconuts on the silver screen in John Carpenter's They Live. A cult classic that Piper would star in after meeting Carpenter at Wrestlemania III. In this film, Piper would play a blue collar tough man who takes on a whole race of ugly, invading aliens that eerily control the masses with the use of subliminal messaging in every media facet available. Chock-full of memorable action scenes and one liner's, it's one of Piper's most iconic lines from the film that I used as inspiration for my Sugar Slam IV Entry.

Starting from the bottom we have a large glass, it's base filled with strawberry Sour Straws intended to mimic the movie's aliens' exposed muscle tissue. Next we have the shake itself, a few cups of ice cream mixed with a few table spoons of blue raspberry snow cone syrup and some blue food coloring that resemble the aliens' blue tinted flesh. This now tangy yet sweet dessert is topped off with a raspberry puree that begins to swirl and mix with the blue cream, yet another homage to the creatures' blue and red skin. Finally the shake is garnished with whipped cream, red and blue gum balls (obviously), Strawberry Pop Rocks that give each drink a nice Roddy Piper styled kick in the ass, and a few more Sour Straws on a skewer.

Now if anyone has any doubts about this entry with its movie theme let's "put the glasses on" and see that They Live is essentially "Hot Rod" Rowdy Roddy Piper uncovering a secret alien plot to take over the world, and the headstrong wrestler justifiably "changing the questions" on their asses! It's also common knowledge among fans that many of Piper's one liners came from old lists he'd make for promo ideas, and let's not forget the 9 minute, impromptu street fight Piper has against Keith David! They Live is an awesome movie that is a clever jab at how our world works in 1986 and even now a days, but it still brings with it a 1980s wrestler solving problems the only way he knows.

SKAM vs BIOEM joint collaboration. I've been thinking about what you said. It's been going around in my head. I've been thinking about what you were. It's a messy messed up blur. And when the con was over. One thing I learned. I think you'd be better off if you were dead.

This project was a collaboration between another toymaker and myself. I sculpted the heads by hand and he cast them in resin. He also put the bodies together and cast them in resin. We hand painted each figure and I created the cardback art. We made 10 sets, there are 7 left.

Just got done finishing up my Halloween DVR list, finishing with They Live. I heard they were making a remake and thought of some of the possible applications, perhaps an iPhone camera app that reveals the aliens instead of the sunglasses.

There is a world out there (perhaps) that many of us do not see. But with certain resources, perhaps we can see what is the "reality" of this world. Now where can I get a pair of those sunglasses.-- Homage to John Carpenter's film, "They Live".

Parker Street Studios will surprise most people who enter the building. The exterior looks like a storage warehouse. Once you're inside, the hallways and corridors are even worse. Dimly lit like a dungeon. Everything bad goes away once you enter the individual studios. You'll see a lot of amazing coloured artwork and creative minds working away in their brightly lit rooms. I even saw a lady demonstrating her homemade robotic vehicle. In short, Parker Street Studios is almost like Vancouver's own version of Tate Modern. However, you can't buy the artwork at Tate Modern.

I had heard of Parker St. Studio via another photographer on Flickr and I just had to find this warehouse and so I did. I was amazed and amused at this life size public art along with the other pieces of work by Canadian Artist, David Robinson. I have lived here in Vancouver, BC since 1992 and still this city brings me surprises and joy.

“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Usually on Creative Mondays I’m designing something that’s pretty close to me. Perhaps a film I’ve just seen at the cinema or maybe a video-game I’ve picked up. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen ‘They Live’ but as Mondo Monday are playing the film I thought I’d add my version to the mix. If you haven’t heard of Mondo Monday (why not) they’re all about reviving cult/b-movie cinema, throwing down the odd quiz and sometimes showcasing comedians!

It’s nice to step back from something I’m not so familiar with and push the comfort zone. I also thought to try a poster with an alternate colour and I thought it would be cool to show the line-work that went into this piece, something I’m still getting to grips with in Adobe Illustrator.
