J'ai conservé précieusement ce thermomètre à mercure en souvenir des bons et loyaux services qu'il nous a rendu à l'époque où les enfants étaient encore petits.

I find my Galileo Thermometer quite fascinating. Apparently so do Amazon Anne and Eve. It is indeed a curious thing! For those of you who are curious about it too, here's what Wikipedia has to say about the inside workings of this thermometer: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_thermometer

HMM- the macromonday theme for today, 5/4, is kitchen- utensils, gadgets and tools :) there are several possibilities (6) for today-- i measured this and it comes in as 2 and 3/4th inches!!

It's such a lovely day outside; I should go for an amble.

I have a feeling the summer is having a last hurrah. A cold front from the west Atlantic is approaching.

I like this thermometer. It's different!

During Lolly's trip to the Fort, she had just missed the snow. Luckily we found a patch of still powdery snow to have a snowball fight with.

And wouldn't ya know it, the very next day, legit snow!

Pictures were a must.

We bought these cute frog weather thermometers and this one sits in the window of my bedroom. You can just see a view of trees and our balcony through the window of the wintery weather outside.

A souvenir of Australia from a number of decades ago, this thermometer is showing the temp on my back patio, which is about 10 degrees F warmer than just outside (it is glassed in and hasn't yet lost the extra heat from the day). For 118 pictures in 2018, #02, "barometer/thermometer".

Taken a few days ago. A cold morning, the car thermometer showed -3 f (-19 c.). Was watching the waves. If the wave hit the steel groin head on, it would split cleanly. When the waves hit at an angle (above), the edge of the wave would roll over the groin. With all of the bits of floating ice it would make a neat "wocka-wocka-wocka" sound as it passed over the corrugated steel. Some people are easily amused. Thanks for viewing. All the best for 2018.

Woke up with a ridiculous sore tonsil today and fevers fluctuating all over the thermometer. They went away towards the end of the day though, hopefully this gets better.

A Galileo thermometer in black & white

Flickr Explore: Dec 25, 2013 #84Added

The Galileo thermometer consists of a vertical glass tube, typically filled with water, and sealed glass bubbles containing coloured water or alcohol. ... When the temperature of the liquid in the glass tube begins to warm up, it expands; hence lowering the density of the liquid, as its mass now occupies a larger volume.
