London and its colours at night, i loved that. After making a night shot of St. Pauls i crossed the Millenium bridge and east of it i found a spot on the river banks of the thames from where i had a nice view towards southwark bridge and the Shard in the background.

a small series of contrasts in London City, part 3: From Mississippi to Manhattan
This is neither Mississippi nor Manhattan. The ships are on River Thames and the skyscrapers at Canary Wharf, both located in the east end of London. Photo taken from Tower bridge.
The London Eye, a big wheel for viewing over the inner city, located near the river Thames and opposite of Westminster and Big Ben was originally planned to stand for about 5 years. Due to its popularity it should now remain "forever. It had its 20th anniversary three weeks ago. At first it was assembled horizontally, then erected by a crane during one week. It is now an important part of the skyline of London.

Das "London Eye", ein grosses Riesenrad, das für seine gute Aussicht über die City berühmt wurde, liegt nahe des Flusses Themse und gegenüber des Parlamentes in Westminster und des Big Bens. Es war ursprünglich für eine Standzeit von 5 Jahren geplant. Wegen seiner Popularität soll es nun dauerhaft bleiben. Vor 3 Wochen feierte es seinen 20. Geburtstag. Zunächst wurde es in horizontaler Lage zusammengebaut und anschliessend während einer Woche von einem Kran angehoben. Inzwischen ist es ein bedeutendes Teil der Londoner Skyline geworden.

Main engine, Tower Bridge London

The Tower Bridge was opened in 1894 as a suspension and counterpoise bridge over the river Thames. Its a masterpiece of engineering art in the 19th century. For me it combines in a unique way sophisticated technology of this time with desigened architecture, although in an now old fashioned style of the british historism.
This is the view on one of the main engines in southern engine hall.
Die Tower Bridge wurde im Jahr 1894 als eine kombinierte Hänge- und Klappbrücke über den Fluss Themse eröffnet. Es ist ein Meisterwerk der Ingenieurskunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Für mich kombiniert sie in einzigartiger Weise ausgefeilte Technik dieser Zeit mit einer stylischen Architektur, wenn auch in einer heute nicht mehr zeitgemässen Form des Britischen Historismus.
Das ist der Blick auf eine der Hauptantriebsmaschine der südwärts gelegenen Maschinenhalle.
On the occasion of the commemoration of the beginning of World War I one hundred years ago, the Frankfurt conceptual artist Tobias Rehberger (*1966) painted the former warship 'HMS President' with those geometric patterns that were used as 'dazzle camouflage' by the British Navy in World War I. The painting was intended to confuse the enemy's warships and submarines and to deceive them about the size and speed of the British ships. In 2014, HMS President was anchored for 6 months on Victoria Embankment near Blackfriars Bridge on the north bank of the Thames.

Anläßlich des Gedenkens an den hundert Jahre zurückliegenden Beginn des 1. Weltkriegs bemalte der Frankfurter Konzeptkünstler Tobias Rehberger (*1966) das frühere Kriegsschiff 'HMS President' mit jenen geometrischen Mustern, die als 'dazzle camouflage' im 1. Weltkrieg von der britischen Marine eingesetzt wurde. Die Bemalung sollte die Kriegsschiffe und U-Boote des Feindes verwirren und über Größe und Geschwindigkeit der britischen Schiffe täuschen. 2014 ging die HMS President für 6 Monate am Victoria Embankment nahe der Blackfriars Bridge am nördlichen Ufer der Themse vor Anker.

The first time i saw that flood barrier was in 2005 during my first London visit. We had a drink in the "anchor and hope" in the evening and i was impressed by the futuristic looking installation i saw from there. I had no camera then but i told me that one day i might come back to photograph that barrier. This year during my London visit it was definitely on my photo list.
I drove out with public transport (DLR from Cannon Street to Charlton, 621 Bus to greenwich Unitech College) on a hot summer afternoon. Apart of the sweating the conditions were perfect, fluffy clouds and a blue sky in the afternoon light.
I took advantage of my Hoya Polarizer and a Lee Big Stopper and took several shots from different angles. This one is my favourite.
THE iconic landmarks of London,Westminster bridge, Big Ben and Houses of Parliament at Sunset.
Shot with a Lee 0,9 softgrad. The Lee helped to keep the tonality and colours of the sky as seen. A HDR treatment would spoil that completely. Additionally i made a 4 minutes exposure for the water with a Lee little stopper which i blended in with Luminance Masks because i like silky and smooth water.
