Weekly Theme: Minimalism

Title: Only the Essentials
Notes: Well, yet again the theme did not immediately lend itself to my subjects. This week we visited the wonderful Devon Horse Show in Devon ( of course ) PA. It is the oldest and largest multi-breed horse show in the country. The main ring is surrounded with stands reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby too. Anyway, I didn't think I would find a good subject that was not some obscure close up and I wanted something different. I think I found it in my final choice, a shot from the Hunter competition. The dapple grey horse and rider were in bright sun, jumping a white hurdle with white fence and white bleachers in the background. Over exposing blew out most of the shot as I was focused on my two subjects. The high key result left only the darkest edges of the light colored horse and most of the rider visible. Just the minimum needed for my shot ;-).
Intrigued by the volume of Boh-themed items I've see around Baltimore, and being an inspired fan of the iconic mascot of National Bohemian beer and the old-school Krylon spray paint logo, I spent a late night combining the two to make a double-awesome t-shirt graphic. The result is my contribution to the fanatical Boh scene only Baltimore can lay claim to. Not to mention the fact that Mr. Boh sure looks good in color...

Week 19 theme: A Mother's Love

Grandson, Drew, stood at our PICK-up spot, at the flagpole, on his Pre-K Graduation Day this week, just as he had done all year watching for me to pick him up.
What started out to be an act of a Mother's love for her young son, turned into so much more this school year... A Grandmother was given purpose in her 'humdrum' life... and dull days were filled with fun and color.
A Grandmother's story:
Sometimes, as Grandparents, we are asked to HELP OUT with the Grandkids...
A couple weeks into this school year, my daughter was asked to go back to being a teacher, after a seven year sabbatical from her teaching career. Her 'babies' were both in school now...their oldest son starting First grade and their youngest was just beginning Pre-K. It had been 12 years since I 'ticked' to a school schedule! The prospect of watching a clock and keeping a school calendar was intimidating.
The five year old was not a HAPPY CAMPER! He liked his Mom better, "at home", and wasn't interested at all, in explanations of a 'second income'! He wasn't ready to share HIS Mom with a room full of fifth graders and their growing pains!
My youngest grandson was hestitant about having a Grandma, fill- in for his Mom! Grandmothers do not always know how to do things like snap pant waists and tie shoes as well as Mommies do them! Gram's have to be taught things like, "I don't like pickles!" and "I only drink water!" In those first few weeks, my Grandson had CONCERN written all over his little face :(
And MY time.... Well, that was put on hold, at least until weekends. I had traded coffee and morning talk shows for Cheerios and MAX & RUBY on "nick jr." My mornings of leisurely folding laundry over phone calls and bill paying while facebooking had instead turned into building Lego sets and Playdoh activities! Lean Cuisine lunches and spinach salads were replaced with Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Hebrew National Franks, plain, in a hot- dog bun.
At first, I saw the circumstance as time that I was giving up... but within weeks, I found I loved having the companionship and the kid noises in our home again! I loved having someone telling me knock-knock jokes as we ran errands! My mind was challenged answering animal questions and my little buddy loved being asked Math Facts! My Grandson discovered that the two of us loved the same HERSHEYS chocolate bars, and that we BOTH didn't like ketchup! He asked me all the time what my favorite color or food was and gave me choices, and then would say, "Gram, we are just alike! I like that, too!" COINCIDENTALLY, we both liked scrambled eggs, and I just happened to have lots of fresh eggs! :)
I don't know any 5 year old boys that like grocery shopping. Drew soon developed a better attitude towards grocery shopping with me. I tried to keep to keep to a short list. He knew where the Deep Dish Pepperoni Pizza LUNCHABLES were stored and led me there first. About Halloween time, Drew discovered he was pretty good at helping me shop. He pointed out that he and his Poppy, liked, "the SAME things: Fig Newtons, Chobani Greek yogurts and Baby Ruth candy bars!" I had trained a shopping buddy in the art of shopping for Goodies!
AS the end of the school year draws near, it makes me sad... I will miss listening to Curious George as I put away laundry and PETE THE Cat books on cd as we drive to Walmart. But most of all, I will miss instances like seeing a little face watching me thru smudges on my car windows as I gas my car. I will miss his warm little hand as we "Share" (his idea) carrying the egg basket to the hen house to gather eggs.
A few weeks ago, my daughter told me that Drew calls HER, Gram, when she gets home, late in the afternoons. I confessed to her that Drew has inadvertently called me, MOM, the whole school year and that I had answered to MOM eagerly.
I remembered the first time that my grandson called me Mom...He got a little embarrassed and his cheeks turned red and he asked,"Gram, is it alright that I sometimes mess-up and call you Mom?"
I bent down and at eye level told him, "if YOU don't mind me pretending that you are my little boy... You know? I might call you SON!" Drew smiled and gave me a hug.
I love this little guy ... I love that he still gives me hugs and kisses.
A favorite time of my life was being a Substitute teacher in my three children's schools. I loved knowing my children's teachers and friends. I loved being a part of their school days!
This school year of 2012-2013, I loved being a Substitute MOM, never a replacement but always a stand-in Mom. In this instance, a Mother's love CAN be substituted by a Grandmother's love.

Awhile back, a colleague and I developed a new algorithm, and then more recently (and more interestingly), came up with a name for it. Since we started with an algorithm called "RX" (after its inventors, Reed and Xiaoli), and introduced a sparse aspect to it, we called it "spaRX." In April, I went to Baltimore to present a paper on it, and I brought along, as audio-visual aids, some wind-up toys. My favorite was this one: it walks across the table shooting sparks all around.
I had a very last minute order (1 day notice) to do a baby shower theme party's cakes etc.. since last week i didnt take any order as I wanted to take a break.. but haha.. after 5days, hand itchy and eager to bake some cakes, so.. i said yes to the challenge.
this whole things took me about 12hrs to do.. from 3pm to 3am (only stopping for dinner n shower).. and i swear.. tink im not gonna do a last min order again.. almost killed me literrally!!! :P

The W196 was Mercedes-Benz's entry for the Formula One World Championship for 1954-55. The model shown here, denoted W196R, and sub-titled 'Monza', refers to the unusual, closed-wheel bodywork fitted to the cars for use at high speed circuits, such as the Monza track.
The W196R was fitted with a 2.5-litre straight-eight engine. At the W196's first race, at the French GP in 1954, the engine produces 192 kW (257 hp). During the two seasons, the engine was developed to produce 220 kW (290 hp).
The W196 raced very successfully, securing 9 wins from 12 starts over the two seasons. The drivers were Juan Manuel Fangio, and Stirling Moss. Mercedes-Benz secured the Manufacturer's Championship in both years. Mercedes-Benz won all but one race for 1955, the championship was shortened due to the horrific accident at Le Mans involving a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR (itself, derived from the W196), used in the Sportscar Manufacturers Championship. Mercedes-Benz then withdrew from involvement in Sportscars and Formula One for more than thirty years.

Week 1 - "Celebration"

Celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated January 6, as a national holiday in Italy, and the tradition of La Befana are a big part of Italian Christmas celebrations. Epiphany commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the three Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. The traditional Christmas holiday season in Italy lasts through Epiphany.
The Legend of La Befana : A Christmas tale from Italian Folklore
La Befana was an old woman who lived in a small village in Italy. She was known throughout the village for her wonderful baking and the cleanliness of her kitchen. She was often seen sweeping the area in front of her home. And many had heard her say that she was so busy baking and cleaning that she rarely had time to do anything else.
One winter day, while La Befana was sweeping in front of her home, three travelers stopped to ask her for a drink of water. They told La Befana that they were astrologers (they were often called the three wise men) who were following a star to the birth place of the Christ child. She kindly gave them water and then invited them to dinner.
After dinner the astrologers prepared to continue their journey and asked her if she would like to come with them to see the Christ child. La Befana shook her head saying that she could not possibly take the time needed for such a journey. She was secretly itching to get back to her cleaning and cooking. She stood at her door and watched them leave.
La Befana went back to her sweeping. But hours later she began to feel that she had made a mistake. Maybe she should have gone with the 3 astrologers to see the Christ child. La Befana decided to follow them.
She quickly grabbed a basket and filled it with baked goods of all kinds. She then put on her shawl and with her basket and broom hurried off into the night practically running to catch up with the wise men.
La Befana traveled through the night but never caught up with the wise men. It is said that she ran and ran until she and her broom were lifted up into the air!
Ever since that night, La Befana is believed to fly through the night or run over the roofs in Italy on Epiphany eve. She stops at the home of every child, leaving them treats in their stockings if they are good and a lump of coal if they are bad.
She hopes that one of the children she visits will be the Christ child.
Legoland Windsor Resort, styled and also known as Legoland Windsor, is a theme park and resort in Windsor, Berkshire in England, themed around the Lego brand. The park opened on 17 March 1996 and is currently operated by Merlin Entertainments. The park's attractions consist of a mixture of Lego-themed rides, models, and building workshops targeted at children between three and twelve.
In 2019, the park had 2.43 million visitors, making it the most visited theme park in the United Kingdom. However, in 2020 the park had a very limited operating season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and limited capacity. As a result of this Legoland Windsor had a huge drop in attendance and was the fourth-most visited park in the UK in 2020. Overall, attendance has steadily risen since 2005. Legoland Windsor regularly draws more attendees than the original Legoland Billund Resort in Denmark; in 2011, it became the tenth-most popular theme park in Europe, a position it has held every year since. Legoland Windsor typically opens from March to January, with closures on some days.
History
In 1989, The Lego Group began research for the development of a second Legoland park after Legoland Billund with over 1000 sites considered. In January 1992, Windsor Safari Park went into receivership and the 150-acre (0.61 km2) site was chosen for the second development. Between 1992 and 1994, planning, design, site preparation and the design and construction of models began. New accommodations were created for the safari animals and services, foundations and infrastructures were installed at the park. In 1995, a scale replica of Big Ben was installed in Miniland whilst other buildings and attractions were becoming established. In September, advance bookings were opened for entrance tickets. Final installations were completed by the beginning of 1996 and at this point, the Legoland Windsor staff-base was recruited. Legoland Windsor opened on 17 March 1996. During its first season, the park attracted over 1.4 million visitors.
In April 2005, The Lego Group decided to sell Legoland parks following losses across the company. On 13 July 2005, Legoland was acquired by the Blackstone Group and control of the parks passed to Merlin Entertainments.
During the 2020 season, the resort closed on 20 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened on 4 July 2020 following a lockdown in the UK. The resort remained open until 5 November when due to government guidance it was forced to close. It reopened for a shortened period over the Christmas period on 4 December 2020 however was again forced to close when the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, where the resort is located, was placed in Tier 4 restrictions on 19 December 2020 under which theme parks could not open.
The resort announced in January 2021 that the resort would not hold its "Brick Week" event in February due to the continuing lockdown in England. It then was announced in February 2021 the resort would open on 12 April 2021 when lockdown restrictions in England allowed theme parks to open. However, it announced its indoor rides and attractions would open later in the year due to government guidelines.
In May 2021, the resort opened a new land titled Lego Mythica: World of Mythical Creatures which includes the United Kingdom's first flying theater ride, called Flight of the Sky Lion. Mythica is the first time a Legoland resort has launched a Lego intellectual property not first released as a Lego set. Also included in the land is a drop tower ride called Fire and Ice Freefall and the rebranded Hydra's Challenge previously known as S.Q.U.I.D Surfer. This land saw the Adventure Land name discontinued for this area of the resort.
In September 2022, the resort opened a new event titled Brick or Treat's Halloween Party. It included a 4D movie, The Great Monster Chase!, and ran until the end of the 2022 Halloween season.
On the 25th September 2023, the Viking River Splash river rapids ride permanently closed after 16 years of operation.
Areas
The park is split into 11 themed lands, incorporating various attractions, restaurants and shops: The Beginning, Duplo Valley, Knight's Kingdom, Lego City, Miniland, Lego Ninjago World, Pirate Shores, Heartlake City, Kingdom of the Pharaohs, Bricktopia, and Lego Mythica: World of Mythical Creatures.
The Beginning
The Beginning is the entrance area to the park. It is composed of a plaza area containing entrance turnstiles, ticket sales, and toilets and stretches to contain a small part of the resort at the bottom of the funicular railway. It has a view of the area surrounding the resort including the nearby town of Windsor, Heathrow Airport, and parts of London.
The main resort shop, The BIG Shop, is located at The Beginning and is the largest Lego store in the UK. Picsolve operates the Photo Shop, which sells photographs of visitors aboard rides and attractions in the resort.
Food and beverage outlets located at The Beginning include the Hill Top Cafe, a coffee outlet, and the Sweet Stop.
The only ride located in The Beginning is the Hill Train, a 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge funicular railway down a curved slope. It is the only ride or attraction to be retained from Windsor Safari Park, being refurbished when the park opened with stained glass windows made from translucent Lego bricks by local school children. It travels 300 metres (980 ft) between two stations, with a height difference between the top and bottom stations of approximately 27 metres (89 ft).
The Creation Centre opened at The Beginning in 2000. The building has housed a number of attractions since it has opened; the first main attraction it contained was Lego Racers in which customers created virtual Lego vehicles and raced them against others. The attraction suffered from reliability issues and closed at the end of 2004. It was revived in 2009 by members of the original team under the new name of Rocket Racers. Reliability issues remained and it closed at the end of the weekend of 8–9 October 2011. In 2012 the attraction space was repurposed for Star Wars Miniland which was based on the Star Wars franchise. Unlike Lego Racers and Rocket Racers, it was classed as a walkthrough attraction with no queue. In 2016, a large model of the Death Star was installed as the centrepiece of the attraction. Following the end of a licensing deal between Lucasfilm and Merlin Entertainments, the attraction closed on 31 December 2019.
The Creation Centre is also home to Legoland Windsor's model makers who display busts of famous figures as well as a view of their studio in a space on the second floor of the centre. On the ground floor of the centre is Apocalypseburg which was part of the Lego Movie 2 set.
Duplo Valley
Duplo Valley is a land aimed at smaller children based on the Duplo toy bricks, with the majority of rides being family rides. Since the resort's opening the land has rotated through a number of different names including Explore Land, Duplo Gardens, and Duplo Land.
At the beginning of the 2020 season, Duplo Valley was reopened following a refurbishment and the construction of a new ride, the Duplo Dino Coaster. The ride, originally planned to be called the Duplo Dream Coaster, became the resort's third rollercoaster after The Dragon and the Dragon's Apprentice. Aimed to be a "my first coaster" it saw a soft opening before the park's temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was designed by Mack Rides and manufactured by ART Engineering GmbH. Alongside the opening of the new ride was the re-theming of three rides and attractions: Duplo Express (previously Duplo Train), Duplo Airport (previously Duplo Valley Airport, Chopper Squadron, and Whirly Birds) and Duplo Playtown (previously Brickville). Also located in Duplo Valley is Fairy Tale Brook, a boat ride which takes visitors on a course containing models of fairy tale characters.
Duplo Valley is home to the resort's water park which consists of two separate rides and attractions: Drench Towers and Splash Safari. Drench Towers is a water splash area with multiple slides which was placed on land previously occupied by Mole-in-One Mini Golf. Splash Safari is a smaller splash area for toddlers which consists of water features made of Duplo models and is located below Drench Towers.
The Duplo Valley Theatre, a puppet theatre showing classic fairy tales, is located in the valley adjacent to Fairy Tale Brook. A family restaurant, Farmer's Joe Chicken Company, is located opposite the theatre.
Knights' Kingdom
Knight's' Kingdom (originally Castleland and previously NEXO Knight's Kingdom) features The Dragon roller coaster, which starts inside the castle themed station, passing Lego tableaux, before travelling outside reaching a speed of around 30 mph (48 km/h). Other rides in the land are the flat carousel ride Merlin's Challenge (previously known as Knight's Quest) and Dragon's Apprentice, a smaller rollercoaster acting as an alternative for shorter visitors not permitted to ride The Dragon.
In previous years, the land has assumed a role as Christmas Kingdom when open in the winter months and houses a grotto in the ride area of The Dragon.
Lego City
Lego City (formerly known as Traffic), is themed around transport. It features the Balloon School (a simulated hot air balloon ride), Coastguard HQ (a boat school ride for children), Fire Academy, L-Drivers (driving school for children aged 3–5) and City Driving School (driving school for children over 1.1 metres (3 ft 7 in). In 2019, a Vekoma "mad-house" attraction called Haunted House Monster Party was added to the area and in 2020, Atlantis Submarine Voyage by Sea Life (which features "submarine" vehicles used to travel through the tank) was rethemed to become Lego City Deep Sea Adventure.
Miniland
Miniland is a miniature park in Lego form, depicting towns and cities from around the world, using nearly 40 million Lego bricks. The area features a number of animated models interacting with each other. Motor vehicles use cables under the paths emitting radio wave signals to steer and allow charging when required. The train system runs on tracks, slowing for stations using slow-down bars, and the boats use underwater motor-driven rubber loops as well as sensors to operate bridges and locks. The system, with lights and sounds, is run by 14 computers using 300 kilometres (190 mi) of underground cabling.
The land is divided into different areas as they are depicted, including the UK and mainland Europe. In 2018, Miniland saw an expansion called "Explore the World" which added more Lego models of global sites including the Sydney Opera House, Forbidden Palace, and Saint Basil's Cathedral. The same year various site from the USA were added.
Lego Ninjago World
Lego Ninjago World opened in May 2017 based upon the Ninjago TV series. The centrepiece attraction is a 4D interactive ride, Ninjago: The Ride manufactured by Triotech. The zone features the relocated and rebranded ride Destiny's Bounty, a Rockin' Tug ride based on the ship in the TV series. The ride was previously known as Longboat Invader, and opened in 2008.
Pirate Shores
Pirate Shores features a log flume, Pirate Falls, a play area, a pirate ship ride named the Jolly Rocker and the Spinning Spider (a teacups-style ride where visitors ride in log-style gondolas as an animatronic Lego spider gnashes its jaws and breathes smoke on a web above).. From 1996 to 2010, this area was known as Wild Woods.
Heartlake City
Heartlake City (formerly Lego City until redecoration in 2015), based on the Lego Friends product range, includes two rides: The Legoland Express (a railway ride around Kingdom of the Pharaohs), and a Disk'O coaster called Mia's Riding Adventure. Return to Skeleton Bay (a pirate stunt show) and Lego Friends to the Rescue (a live music concert) take place around the harbour performed by the Lego Friends.
The Kingdom of the Pharaohs
The Kingdom of the Pharaohs contains Laser Raiders, an interactive dark ride through an Egyptian tomb where visitors shoot targets to gain points. Also in this area are Scarab Bouncers, Aero Nomad, Desert Chase, and Thunder Blazer. The latter three rides are fairground based attractions such as a carousel, a Ferris wheel and a chair-o-planes rides.
Bricktopia
Bricktopia (previously called Imagination and Imagination Centre) is an area themed around education through Lego. The centre piece is the Legoland Learning Academy (previously Lego Education Centre) which offers National Curriculum workshops. In 2019 the academy was awarded Best Venue for STEM Learning.
The only ride in Bricktopia is Sky Rider, which is an elevated track ride opened in March 1996 and refurbished between the 2001 and 2002 seasons.[50] The ride gives visitors views of Miniland.
Bricktopia includes Lego Studios 4D (previously known as the Imagination Theatre) which shows Lego-themed films. In the 2020 season, these were Lego City 4D – Officer in Pursuit, Lego Ninjago – Master of the 4th Dimension, and Lego Dreamzzz 4D - Z-Blob Rescue Rush.
In 2023, the Lego Reef was replaced with LEGO Ferrari Build and Race.
Lego Mythica: World of Mythical Creatures
Opening in 2021, Mythica is a land based where Adventure Land was previously located. The centrepiece is Flight of the Sky Lion, a flying theatre ride. Also in the land are two drop towers and the re-themed S.Q.U.I.D. Surfer ride known as Hydra's Challenge.

Resort hotels
Legoland Windsor Resort currently has two hotels.
Legoland Hotel
The Legoland Hotel opened in March 2012. it is located at the back of the park, in the Adventure land section, on the old site of the Jungle Coaster. Visitors enter the hotel on the ground floor but enter the park on the second floor. The hotel is home to the Bricks Restaurant (a buffet) and the Skyline Bar, both on the second floor. The resort has featured various Lego themed rooms. Customers of the hotels have access to the pirate-themed indoor pool and fitness facility (located at the Legoland Hotel), a treasure hunt in each room, and access to select park attractions before the general public enters the park. The second floor includes a loft where Lego video games can be played on PlayStation 4 consoles. The ground floor features a Lego store and bins of bricks for building.
Castle Hotel
The Legoland Castle Hotel opened on 1 July 2017. The hotel was opened by competition winner James Waine who designed a model that was built by professional model makers and put outside the hotel. The hotel offers wizard- and knight-themed rooms. The hotel is only accessible from the park; visitors must check-in at the Legoland Hotel and travel through the hotel and the park to reach the Castle Hotel. The Castle Hotel is located next to the Legoland Hotel, and includes the Tournament Tavern restaurant.
Woodland Village
In Legoland Windsor's ten-year plan, the park expressed interest in building a holiday village of 450 lodges ranging from barrel-style glamping to large family lodges. This idea culminated in the Woodland Village. Opening on the 24th May 2024, will be "a haven to retreat to after a busy day at the Park". According to the official website, it will feature 150 lodges (much less than the planned 450), a Clubhouse with a restaurant, bar and live entertainment and the chance to become a LEGOLAND ranger. What the latter will involve is unknown at time of writing.

Peasholm Park
Peasholm Park is an oriental-themed municipal park located in the seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. It opened in 1912, and became a venue for galas, displays and exhibitions.
In 1924 the park was extended to include Peasholm Glen, a natural ravine. Attractions include an artificial boating lake, where mock naval battles are staged, a putting green and a champion tree walk.
The park suffered a decline in use from the 1970's as the number of holidaymakers visiting Scarborough decreased, but it has been restored using Heritage Lottery Funding.
The Setting of Peasholm Park
Peasholm Park is sited on the north side of the town of Scarborough in a mainly residential area. The site is about 14-hectares, and takes in a narrow steep-sided valley running north-east towards North Bay. The valley gradually broadens until it opens out on to low-lying ground closer to the sea.
The south-west tip of the site adjoins a cemetery which was opened in the late 19th. century. There is iron fencing on the perimeter of the park in some places, but most of the park boundary is defined just by pavements or grass verges alongside the perimeter roads.
The History of Peasholm Park
The park is on the site of the medieval manor house of Northstead which was part of the Crown Estate from the 14th. century. By the beginning of the 20th. century, the area was open land used for farming and public allotments.
In 1911, Scarborough Corporation bought some land called Tuckers Field from the Duchy of Lancaster to create a public park.
It was the borough engineer, Harry W Smith, who had the idea of setting out the gardens with a Japanese theme. Japanese style statues in the park were purchased from Killerby Hall, and exotic shrubs and flowers were imported from the home of a local retired banker who was living on the French Riviera.
In 1924, the park was extended south-westwards along Peasholm Glen following the purchase of more land from the Duchy of Lancaster in 1921. Parts of the east side of the Glen were in private ownership, and these were donated to the Corporation.
The park was used for aquatic displays, musical performances and evening firework displays. It became immensely popular in the immediate pre- and post-Second World War era.
After a period of decay a programme of restoration was initiated. Improvement works were made possible by a £300,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional funds from Scarborough Borough Council.
Following the draining of the lake, work was undertaken to remove the large amount of silt on the lake bottom.
The park was Grade II listed in 1999.
Peasholm Park was closed in 1999, following a fire at the pagoda started by vandals. Heritage lottery funding has since allowed the restoration of the pagoda itself, the Half-Moon Bridge and the gardens.
Features of Peasholm Park
The Peasholm Glen Tree Trail has rare and unusual trees. The lottery-funded project there aims to conserve the trees, and provides a leafleted trail identifying the most interesting and important species. The leaflet is free, and is also available to download from the Internet.
During restoration of the site, the Dicksonian Elm, a tree that was previously believed to be extinct, was discovered alive and well in Peasholm Glen.
Japanese-themed gardens and lake with a pagoda said to be based on the Willow Pattern pottery design, are a central feature of the park. The lake has an island which is accessible from a Japanese-style bridge during school holidays and tourist seasons in the daytime when the gate is unlocked.
There are also waterfalls and wildlife in the more tranquil wooded areas.
Peasholm Park Events
The Naval Warfare event, the Battle of Peasholm, has been played out for half an hour three times a week during the summer season for over 80 years.
The model boats used are mostly man-powered, earning the fleet the title of "The smallest manned navy in the world".
All the boats were man powered until 1929, when electricity was introduced, and now only the larger boats need to be steered by council employees. In the early days, the models were First World War battleships and a U-boat. Then, after the Second World War, the fleet was replaced with new vessels, and the battle that was recreated was the Battle of the River Plate.
Other events staged in the park include silver and brass band concerts, party in the park, proms in the park and lantern displays.
Remedial Work at Peasholm Park
A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled the Scarborough Borough Council to rebuild the Pagoda in its original form using fire retardant wood. The Half-moon Bridge connecting the Island to the mainland has been replaced, the cascade renovated and the gardens restored and upgraded.
J. Salmon Ltd.
Alas, J. Salmon no longer produce postcards. Having churned out small coloured rectangles of card from its factory in Kent for more than 100 years, the company stopped publishing postcards in 2017.
The fifth-generation brothers who still ran the company sent a letter to their clients in the autumn of 2017, advising them that the presses would cease printing at the end of 2017, with their remaining stock being sold off throughout the following year.
The firm’s story began in 1880, when the original J. Salmon acquired a printing business on Sevenoaks high street, and produced a collection of twelve black and white scenes of the town.
In 1912, the business broke through into the big time by commissioning the artist Alfred Robert Quinton (1853 - 1934), who produced 2,300 scenes of British life for them up until his death.
From Redruth to King’s Lynn, his softly coloured, highly detailed watercolours of rosy milkmaids, bucolic pumphouses and picturesque harbour towns earned him a place in the hearts of the public, despite references to Alfred's 'chocolate-box art' by some art critics.
J. Salmon also produced photographs and cheery oils of seaside imagery captioned with a garrulous enthusiasm: “Eat More Chips!”, “Sun, Sand & Sea”, “We’re Going Camping!”
It commissioned the comic artist Reg Maurice (who often worked under the pseudonym Vera Paterson), to produce pictures of comically bulbous children with cutesy captions, alongside the usual stock images of British towns.
It was this century’s changing habits – and technology – that did for Salmon. Co-managing director Charles Salmon noted:
“People are going for shorter breaks,
not for a fortnight, so you’re back home
before your postcards have arrived."
He barely needed to say that Instagram and Facebook had made their product all but redundant, almost wiping out the entire industry in a decade.
Michelle Abadie, co-director of the John Hinde Collection, said:
“When I heard the news, I was
actually surprised they still existed."
John Hinde was once J Salmon’s biggest rival; it sold 50-60 million postcards a year at its peak in the 1960's, but it, too, shuttered four years previously. The licensing for its rich archive of images was sold off, and repurposed in art books.
However, in one sense, the death of the postcard is overstated. Like vinyl records, our fetish for the physical objects we left behind is already making its presence felt.
Michelle Abadie points out:
“If you go into Waterstones now, they
sell lots of postcards of book covers.
The idea itself isn’t dead – as a
decorative object, people still want
them.”
