Old carpet samples and production waste get a second life with AW’s design contest. While sorting and recycling will always be important environmental measures in the carpet and floor covering industry, upcycling pushes the envelope that bit further. By upgrading waste into new, desirable products, AW takes an ecological stand while feeding its creative hunger. The contest challenges Belgian design, fashion and textile students to create a product, garment, furniture or accessory with carpet scraps. The finest design wins a cash prize. From March 29th to May 13th the winning designs from 2011 and 2012 are being exhibited at TIO3 in Ronse.
'For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.. Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself. He threshes you to make you naked.'

I am looking forward to the show and to visiting my old Moore College of Art and Design, where I graduated 20 years ago from the Textile Design Department! I am so happy that I am still totally inspired by textiles and that I have the opportunity to teach felt making to adults and children in the Stuttgart region of Germany! I got the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in teaching art, also at Moore, so it all worked out for the best I guess!!! The only thing that worked against me 20 years ago was that the credits did not transfer from America to Germany!!!!! OOOO that made me mad back then, but now it is no big deal because I am teaching just like I always wished I would!

Here is a Graffiti Print textile I helped design while working with designer Jillian Lewis for her FW2009 collection.
This is the colorway we decided to go with. Next step is to get the fabric made.
Having 3 days time to felt the pulse warmers, the head wraps and the poncho was great! We had enough time to take time and talk and eat and take fun breaks with lots of interesting conversation.
Jo-Ann Store opening Henderson, NV July 10, 2008. We on the Strip in Las Vagas! Oh, by the way, my blouse is made from fabric I designed exclusively for Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores.
Having a breeze come through the window helps to dry the shibori quickly. If the piece is not to your satisfaction, well then it can be dyed again and again until it is just how you want it. A protective plastic sheet is a must when working around wooden floors and white tables!!!!

This is still in the beginning stages of the textile design when we were trying to decide which colorway to go with.

One dress- can be worn three ways! My first time working with a knit fabric. Why did I wait so long to sew with knits??
This will surely be a wonderful furoshiki wrap with its long silk attachments for wrapping and tying a special object into! Great dye results!!!
Once everything is laid out and ready to go, the nuno felting can begin. The first step is to gently rub the air out of the wool.
Working a nuno felt piece requires time and patience! We got the pieces lightly felted and once they were just beginning to wander, we steamed the rolled up piece for a few minutes in a big pot . Some of the ladies even microwaved their rolls so that the heat helped to felt during the fulling rock-n-rolling phase of felting!
