The Texas Instruments TI-1795.

TI built this little solar desktop calculator from 1984 to 1987.

The cost back then was less than $10. It was nothing fancy, just the basics.

I found TI-1795 in my office April of 1990 when I accepted a Labor Management job for Affiliated Foods Distribution. I used it daily for the next three years.

At first I thought everything was great. I would press the keys and watch sums, differences, products and dividends appear. Quick and efficient. Never needed batteries. Powered by light. He was green before Al Gore.

All was right with the world.

But Affiliated fell on hard times. Walmart had begun to sell groceries. And it’s hard to compete with Walmart.

When we filed Chapter 7 in 1993 I was owed two weeks vacation. When I inventoried the offices for the auction, I left TI-1795 off the list and took him with me. A small victory I thought. I would hold him ransom for the vacation. When I never got it the little calculator became mine.

I took him with me to Budweiser were we calculated profit and loss, miles driven, cases of beer received, loaded, shipped and sold. We even figured the losses when the rail cars were twice burgled. Imagine the attention that a train full of Bud can draw after dark, in a college town, across the road from the football stadium. Yehaaa!

Next was Martin-Brower/PoSource/Ameriserve. While I worked there, we lost money all six years but the little machine never stopped working.

When Ameriserve filed Chapter 7 in 2000 I packed my office up and TI-1795 sat in my garage for 3 years.

In late 2003 the loss cycle was repeated when I unpacked my little friend at Vistar. I was offered a severance package and took our services to Blockbuster Distribution.

During my five years there we only made money one quarter. The other 21 quarters were a total loss of over $2 billion dollars. Now don’t get excited. The distribution division exceeded plan yearly. TI-1795 and I am not responsible for the position Blockbuster is in today. But my boss must have been superstitious, because he asked me to never bring that calculator back into the building. TI-1795 was banished to the console of Old Dollar.

I left Blockbuster in April 2010 and my little buddy is still in the truck. I fear even letting the sun shine onto his little solar panel.

TI-1795 has spent most of the last twenty years in money losing companies. I think it might be time to retire this little fellow. Maybe he just doesn’t add right? Perhaps I could spend $10 and replace him

Found while doing research on Korean Airlines 007 Attack.

A gayer version of the same thing.

Not every day you run into a 1970's calculator -- especially in a parking lot of an old, now-cleared building.

The lot used to house a car dealer; I wonder if it was used in transactions all those years ago....

By the "TIE-8000" description, this might be a Texas Instruments device -- but I can't find a reference to an 8000 model from them online. If anyone can help identify this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Texas Instruments - "La Dictée Magique".

1981.

(Vue complète).

It's an Expandora build using current-production ICs. Texas Instruments OP07s in place of the old LM308 and with a Texas Instruments RC4558 in place of the old Japan Radio Company JRC4558. Oh, and the original Sharp PC419 optocoupler has been replaced with a Fairchild H11F1.

So really, a complete substitution of the key components, all of which are out of production and rare. I have original parts to use for comparison, so this could be informative. I've socketed everything.

Another incredibly verbose ad, from when people took time to read ads.

From National Geographic, December 1983.

Science Camp – Week One:

We started off our Summer Camp season with our Science Summer Camp for girls. What a great week of learning and fun experiments! With our fearless leader, Jennifer Stimpson, teaching for our Science Camp we had a blast.

The girls had an opportunity to learn about the periodic table and conduct experiments that helped reinforce what they were learning. The campers also learned about four Scientists in our “Mystery Scientist” challenge in which they were given clues to figure out who their scientist’s were. After finding their mystery scientist, each team created a skit to teach others about their scientist, which they presented on Friday for museum staff and parents. The campers also had the opportunity to make homemade Shea butter lotion, the differences in penny materials, see an IMAX film about prehistoric sea creatures, tour the museum, and much more...

The cover of the booklet for another of my old TI99/4A games.

From the '80s, when the graphics promoting the game were better than those in the game.

This was a fun game, though; certainly, of the original TI ones, probably my favourite (not including Atarisoft games like Defender).

Replacement of the opamp 5532 for OPA1602 from Texas Instruments, on the stereo audio output of the Sony DVP-NS930V.

1st impression: "Jazzy" op-amp. Sounds great with Diana Krall. Fantastic definition.

Later impressions: A great all-round opamp, and I'm enjoying a bit more than the LM4562. Listened music like Diana Krall as said before, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Rodrigo Leão, Arcangelo Corelli, Carl Orff, Zero7, Deolinda... If know what I'm talking about, you know that there's a wide variety of music here.

Last impressions: OPA1602 sounded great in system with a Cambridge Audio A1 v3.0 (modified) and a 3 way Sony Speakers, but I moved it to a system with an Audiolab 8000A and Tannoy Mercury V4 speakers, the low frequencies lost impact. At a point that the previous 5532 sounded way better. In this Audiolab+Tannoy system, on the other hand, a SACD modified with LM4562, achieved the best sound for me, so for now this confirms the last opamp as the solution that suits me better, being at an output of a SACD or in an integrated amplifier.

Conclusion: OPA1602 will be replaced by an LM4562 and more auditions are on the way for this SACD.

Bought new from a parts distributor. Was curious to see the differences between 2-Input and 3-Input gates.

I also bought 4-Input Gates and some other gate types but TI seems to have switched to a new way of making these chips and they are much much smaller and completely covered in metal, so I can't do anything with them.

This is a Digital Baseband Processor designed by Texas Instruments in 2004. It was most likely contained in a Sony Ericsson Z520a cell phone.

This chip was incredibly difficult to identify, I only had portions of the main board and google did not return anything immediately. The only thing I was able to find which documented this chip was this page:

electronics360.globalspec.com/article/3300/sony-ericsson-...

It says:

"DBB - Digital Baseband Processor - Texas Instruments - 751979BIZ"

As far as I can tell this chip has no publicly available data sheet.

Mucking about with the macro function on my phone's camera. This is a Texas Instruments H4 board. It's basically a reference board for the ol' OMAP 2420 chip.

We used to use these a lot back at the original Symbian Software Ltd. Now they mostly gather dust (a whole bunch were thrown away recently), but due to my current work I had do dust one off and fire it up.

Ahh... the good ol' days.

Some of the more obscure Tube Screamer op amps. I tried these vs. the vintage LM1458 in the Jan Ray. Kind of a Texas (Instruments) Civil War! Heh...

The 4558s sounded pretty much like 4558s. Not a ton of high end, kind of compressed and pleasant. The 1458 is the dual version of the LM741 we all know and love from the Distortion+. It's not really hi-fi, but it has kind of a Presence peak that makes it seem more open than a 4558. For the Jan Ray, I think the 1458 sounded more appropriate.
