Astronauts from five space agencies around the world take part in ESA’s CAVES training course– Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behaviour and performance Skills.
The six cavenauts of this edition of CAVES are ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, NASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Jeanette Epps, Roscosmos’ cosmonaut Nikolai Chub, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Josh Kutryk and JAXA’s space agency Takuya Onishi.
The three-week course prepares astronauts to work safely and effectively in multicultural teams in an environment where safety is critical.
As they explore caves they encounter caverns, underground lakes and strange microscopic life. They test new technology and conduct science – just as if they were living on the International Space Station.
The six astronauts have to rely on their own skills, teamwork and ground control to achieve their mission goals – the course is designed to foster effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, leadership and team dynamics.

Traditional market town public house. The Bull goes back to the days when bulls were tethered to metal rings set in the cobble stones on market days. The rings are still there but cattle no longer come to market at Thirsk.
Thirsk is a very attractive market town that grew up between two important medieval roads on either side of Cod Beck (indeed, the name 'Thirsk' may derive from 'settlement by the river'). Old Thirsk is on the east side of the beck, where the old road from York to Yarm, now called Long Street, runs beside the water. Between the road and the beck is St James's Green, where a cattle market was held as early as the 14th century. The Green takes its name from a 12th century chapel, sadly no longer there, dedicated to St James.
The green may look peaceful now, but it has seen historical drama; the Earl of Northumberland was said to have been murdered under an elm tree here in 1489, and John Wesley preached here in 1763.
The newer Thirsk is on the west side of the beck, where the road from Topcliffe to Northallerton used to run. There are few buildings older than the 17th century, though several attractive inns from that period cluster around the market place. The Fleece Inn dates to the early 18th century, and the attractive Crown Hotel was built in 1682. The Three Tuns, though it has a Georgian frontage, may date in parts to the 17th century. The centrepiece of the market place is the Market Clock, erected in 1896 to commemorate the 1893 wedding of the Duke of York to Princess Mary of Teck, better known as King George V and Queen Mary.
There was a 12th century castle in Thirsk, built by Robert de Mowbray. A later Mowbray, Roger, defended Thirsk Castle against Henry II in 1173, but the castle was destroyed by Henry in 1176. Traces of the moat can be seen off Castlegate.

"The fragment comes from a scene in which the slaughterhouse adjacent to the Great Temple is represented. The cattle being fattened for sacrifice are tethered to a common tethering block. This representation is unusual in distinguishing calves from the full-grown oxen generally depicted in feeding scenes (Davies 1903, pl. XXIX). A veterinarian however, has suggested that the man represented here may be removing the cud from the calf`s mouth."

On March 6, 2017, FDNY launched its first ever tethered drone to respond to a fire in a 6-story building on Crotona Park North in the Bronx.
The $85,000 FDNY tethered drone weighs 8 pounds and incorporates both a high-definition camera and infrared camera. These capabilities allow the drone to transmit live images of a fire operation to the Chief in charge of the incident. The drone’s camera allows Chiefs at the command post to see where Firefighters are operating on the roof of a building and to make decisions to help suppress the fire and keep FDNY members safe. The image is fed directly to the Incident Commander and is also shared with senior decision makers in the Fire Department through the FDNY Operations Center.
"We deployed the drone for the first time in support of a 4th alarm fire in the Bronx,” says FDNY Director of FDNY Operations Center, Timothy Herlocker. “We were able to get a good view of the roof, which allowed the Incident Commander on the ground to view the Firefighters as they were conducting roof operations, venting the roof and putting water on the fire."
“This fire was helped by our drone, said Deputy Assistant Chief Dan Donoghue, the incident commander at the 4th alarm fire. “The roof started to fail and we had a lot of great radio reports but that’s only verbal, so with the drone we had good visual pictures and it really helped us make decisions to put this fire out and keep our members safe.”
The FDNY drone is tethered using a small cable that carries electricity up to the device, which gives the drone an unlimited flight time. The drone can stay aloft for as long as necessary to keep an aerial view on the target. All controls, data, and power transmit back and forth through the tether preventing interference with radio frequency signals. The drone is piloted by specially trained FDNY Firefighters from the Department’s Command Tactical Unit. The Department currently has three drones in its fleet to deploy as needed.
“This new technology is going to make a positive impact in our fire operations,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “The drone’s camera gives our Chiefs a view they never had before. It’s an important tool that will make our members, and the people we protect, even safer.”
FDNY works closely with the FAA to ensure the drone operates safely and adheres to all rules and policies regarding airspace in New York City. The Fire Department Operations Center contacts the FAA prior to flying the drone for permission to deploy at night, or into FAA Class B Air Space - the FAA’s most restricted air space. Approval takes approximately ten minutes and takes place while the drone and its operators are responding to a fire.

Well… this picture is fairly boring compared to the others!
This one did not take off, it was a tethered balloon. After this I was was too thirsty to care about anything else, so I was off to find some sweet tea! Still so happy that the sky had all those clouds!

A sculpture of a man with an ankle chain which has a mobile phone shaped block attached to it (not visible in this image). The artist's brief: The price of always being connected is -always being connected. All pervasive mobile communication has blurred the boundaries of our work and personal lives; maintaining an online presence cuts into the time we have for people in the real world; and privacy is almost a thing of the past. In the guise of making our lives easier, communications technology has come to control and define our every waking moment and ironically social networking has been shown to make users feel more alienated than ever. Be careful what you wish for!.
