37403 Isle of Mull brings up the rear of the Branch Line Society's "The Merchant of Teesside" as it runs off the Hitachi test track (in reality a short dead-end single line alongside Network Rail's Bishop Auckland branch) and back into the Merchant Park factory site. [Pole, 2/6 sections (~2.7m)]
After photographing 70812 at Sunderland Bridge, running over fifty minutes late, I knew I wouldn't make it here before the BLS tour ran into the site but knew a trip on the test track was part of the itinerary so the train would reappear well before its 12.15 departure time (and then go back in again). I'd not checked out the location in advance, but looking at satellite views thought there was probably a view from the bridge. I also spotted an unmetalled road on the east side of the line, which OS maps showed was also a public footpath, and it looked like the vegetation was quite low so I could probably easily see over it using the pole.
The photographers on the bridge told me the plan was to run down the test track at 11am, and it was now 10.50. The shot from the bridge would not show the train on the test track itself, just on the connection into Merchant Park Sidings (although there was a view looking the other way, albeit looking into the sun and of 37516 not 37403), and I wanted a shot of the train on the test track if I could. It looked like getting pictures from the side of the line was going to be easy, so I parked the car at the end of the lane (there's a barrier which could be closed, so I didn't drive down - although someone else did), grabbed the pole and set off down the lane. I decided not to go very far down, at least initially, and chose this spot because there was a gap in the fence which separates the two lines, giving a better shot. I could have done the shot without any elevation, but using the pole allowed me to stand a little further back and still see over the bushes. I gave myself some "wobble allowance" (not actually needed!), so this is slightly cropped on the left and across the bottom.
Just after 11am, I heard the distinctive sound of a 37 moving away, and the sun cleared a cloud. The train came round the corner, those on the bridge got their shots, the loco appeared this side of the bridge, I took one frame before it reached the first OHL mast, and then the sun hit the next cloud: by the time the front of the train reached this position it was dull again... If I'd got the outward run in sun I had been going to move further down the line (where the fence would have been in the way), but I stayed put and hoped the sun would come out and stay out when it came back.
The sun did indeed come out and go back in again a few times before the train set off on its return, and also went in and out as the train slowly made its way towards me... so if I'd gone further down I might have been unlucky, depending on where I was actually stood. But as the train got closer, the sun got closer to a big patch of blue sky, and popped out just in time. But with a 5mph speed limit here a tiny bit of squiff still caused a slight but noticeable dimming over the train a few frames after this one (and even on this frame the area to the right of the nearest two coaches isn't fully lit). Of course, the sun angle wasn't perfect (the outward run would have been marginally better), especially with maroon coaches, so this has had a slight tickle to lighten the shadows.

A souvenir from a family vacation to Disney World about 10 years ago. Our son Dew loves everything about cars (he’s now a technician for Tesla), and the Test Track ride at Epcot was one of his favorite rides from our multi-day visit.

'DB Schenker' Class 67 No.67023 is seen accelerating away from Syston Junction heading under the bypass bridge with an early running 3Z10, Derby R.T.C.(Network Rail) to Old Dalby Network Rail test train with coaches for calibration at the test facility. This wasn't originally the planned shot but as you can see a somewhat changed weather forecast and an early running train meant that I had to settle for this location, with the sun a little head on for my liking but it'll do. The load 4 consist fitted nicely into this relatively small lit area, fellow classmate No.67008 can be seen dead in tow on the rear of the train to aid reversing movements later on at Old Dalby.
