The razorbill is a medium-sized seabird. It is black above and white below. It has a thick black beak which is deep and blunt, unlike the thinner bill of the similar guillemot. It breeds around the coast of the UK, with the largest colonies in northern Scotland. There are none breeding between the Humber and the Isle of Wight. Birds only come to shore to breed and winter in the northern Atlantic.

While landscapes are my primary photographic objective I pack 2 cameras in case I get lucky and see wildlife. This proud elk was standing in the Madison River while looking at his wandering herd who had wandered further downstream. Got lucky this day.
An elks impressive antlers draw a lot of attention, as they should....did you know:

Side-blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana).from the Channel Islands National Park. Was trying hard to photograph the Island Fence Lizard that is endemic to Channel Islands but it wouldn't be cooperative - well that's their loss! So lets take this opportunity to sing the praises of the side blotch lizard! They have a cool mating hierarchy discovered by biologists from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Its best described as a rock-paper-scissors strategy. Males have either orange, blue, or yellow throats and each type follows a fixed, heritable mating strategy. Orange-throated males are strongest and do not form strong pair bonds; instead, they fight blue-throated males for their females. Yellow-throated males, however, manage to snatch females away from them for mating. The large size and aggression is caused by high testosterone production. Blue-throated males are middle-sized and form strong pair bonds. While they are outcompeted by orange-throated males, they can defend against yellow-throated ones. Because blue-throated males produce less testosterone they are not as large as the orange-throated males, but it gives them the advantage of being less aggressive and able to form strong pair bonds. Yellow-throated males are smallest, and their coloration mimics females. This lets them approach females near orange-throated males and mate when the males are distracted. This is less likely to work with a female that has bonded with a blue-throated male. This can be summarized as "orange beats blue, blue beats yellow, and yellow beats orange", which is similar to the rules of rock-paper-scissors.
Although on a deer park, rather than the wilds of Scotland, this master of the rut still cut an impressive sight.
It's early days yet, but he still had his work cut out fending off rivals including a few cheeky young chancers half his size.

The fallow deer rut is in full swing over here.
These bundles of testosterone were putting on a display and challenging each other all morning long. As a result, they didn't pay much attention to me and I was able to get relatively close to get some shots.
Meadow Pipits are becoming more obvious and perching on posts as well as performing song-flights. Testosterone levels are rising with the temperature

A Red deer with 12 points (six per antler) to his antler is called a “Royal stag”, while 14 points make an “Imperial stag” and an animal with 16 points or more is referred to as a “Monarch”.
The antlers are testosterone-driven and as the stag's testosterone levels drop in the autumn, the velvet is shed and the antlers stop growing. With the approach of autumn, the antlers begin to calcify and the stags' testosterone production builds for the approaching rut (mating season).

Indigo buntings are a species that have often evaded pretty much every lens I own, camera or otherwise. While not necessarily retiring, they can be a bit wary, or at least they were whenever I tried to focus on them. However, I found out that all that wariness flies the coop at this time of year, when males are feuding with each other. The flowing testosterone probably has something to do with it, I reckon. Either way, this guy was a big fan of this perch, which yielded the best looks and photos I’ve gotten of this species to date, despite being quite common and a regular breeder.

Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)
I came upon these two youngish bucks during rut a few years ago. Without a doe anywhere in sight they did a little friendly sparring for what I can only assume was practice and perhaps venting a little testosterone build up. After a few minutes of wrestling the downhill looser spent a moment or two grooming the victor.

Last in the series of explorations into a contemporary use of Dada aesthetics, ideas and method, all on a digital platform. Why do this? It's a balance thing. AI is all the rage now and it's providing some stunning images but I still haven't warmed to the idea of creating visual images solely or mostly through words and algorithms. Chance, accident and intuition are a good balance to this and always a solution when the left brain dominates.
Logo-centricity has been declared a "Male" attribute. But I quietly question that. So here I punned on the word 'testosterone" as I put together a very 'masculine' image. Male faces, maps, cars, words and numbers ...

There's years of training in many musical fields behind his solo but it comes out in a furious and deliciously disorienting flurry of notes. Some of the most daring and definition-shattering piano work I've ever heard.

The hormones have kicked in... my sweet adorable people pleasing puppy is still adorable but increasingly, he tries it on. Ignoring me, as in this image, throwing puppy tantrums, growling, you name it, he tries it.

Pumped up with testosterone, the Red Deer stag has only one thing on its mind. Forgoing food, it fights off contenders, locking with them in a clash of antlers.
In such a stage of mind its a powerful and unpredictable beast. To photograph it I had to get fairly close, but didn't hang about too long. Seeing it attention was drawn to me, I withdraw to a safer place.
When the autumn rut is over, exhausted and battle weary, they reverts back to their calmer ways, to await another season. And so it is, the next generation is secured. Such is the cycle of life and the need to propagate the species. Long may it continue.

Black Grouse Lek the whole year around but things get a bit more serious when the testosterone wells up.
The combination of isolation, attacks on the Evans Cherry Tree community and adolescent cherry testosterone has led to an increase in incidents of bizarre and freakish behaviour.
One example of this increase in cherry rage was this past Sunday at the C.F.L. (Cherry Football League) game. A small group of adolescent cherries got into a fight which resulted in some sliced cherries, one to the pit. Thank goodness the injuries were not life threatening.
A tip through Cherry Stoppers led the authorities to the alleged instigator of the fight, which in turn led to a key witness having to identify the sour cherry.
This freak behaviour has to stop. It's time to make Sundays great again and put the cherry on top.

Wikipedia: The elk (Cervus canadensis), also known as the wapiti, is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in its native range of North America, as well as Central and East Asia. The common name elk, used in North America, creates confusion because the larger Alces alces, which is called moose in North America, is also called elk in British English, and related names in other European languages (German Elch, Swedish älg, and French élan). The name "wapiti" is sometimes used in North America for Cervus canadensis. It originates from the Shawnee and Cree word waapiti, meaning 'white rump'.
Elk have thick bodies with slender legs and short tails. They have a shoulder height of 0.75–1.5 m (2 ft 6 in – 4 ft 11 in) with a nose-to-tail length of 1.6–2.7 m (5 ft 3 in – 8 ft 10 in). Males are larger and weigh 178–497 kg (392–1,096 lb) while females weigh 171–292 kg (377–644 lb).[19]
Antlers are made of bone, which can grow at a rate of 2.5 centimeters (0.98 in) per day. While actively growing, a soft layer of highly vascularized skin known as velvet covers and protects them. This is shed in the summer when the antlers have fully developed.[25] Bull elk typically have around six tines on each antler. The Siberian and North American elk carry the largest antlers while the Altai wapiti has the smallest.[13] Roosevelt bull antlers can weigh 18 kg (40 lb).[25] The formation and retention of antlers are testosterone-driven.[26] In late winter and early spring, the testosterone level drops, which causes the antlers to shed.[27]
Actually I bet this scene has nothing to do with winter driving, but everything to do with alcohol &/or testosterone poisoning making some kid think he could drive a jeep through a marsh. :-)
A small male side-blotched lizard saw me approaching and he started doing pushups when I was 50 feet away. The pushups are meant to discourage other males from entering his territory, which he uses for courting females.
I don't know how he knew I was male.
This male, I think, is a juvenile that is developing the orange throat color that advertises the highest-testosterone, most aggressive of the three male color morphs.

Taken at Knole Park, Kent, UK.
The park is populated by around 350 wild deer today and is managed by Knole Estate. It was originally stocked purely with fallow deer until a herd of Japanese Sika deer were introduced in the 19th century, and the two species now roam the landscape together.
The herd’s ancestors stretch back 500 years and the park is one of very few wild deer parks in England to have survived this long. The park was first enclosed by a fence in 1455 by Thomas Bourchier to indulge the passion for hunting at the time.
Towards the end of March and beginning of April the deer will shed their winter coats and the lighter summer coats come through. The deer start to look messy and untidy when this happens because the new coat comes from underneath and pushes the old one out.
Antler growth is governed by testosterone levels, which is at its lowest when the antler casts (and at its highest during the rut in autumn). The deer have an open sore for a day or two but the velvet soon comes through and the new antlers start to grow.
Calving and fawning happens in June/July and the rut occurs in October/November.
