Orchidaceae is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species, found in 880 genera. Selecting which of the two families is larger is still under debate, as concrete numbers on such enormous families are constantly in flux. Regardless, the number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. The family also encompasses about 6â11% of all seed plants.The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species). The family also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), Orchis (type genus), and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century, horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars. The name comes from the Ancient Greek á½ÏÏÎ¹Ï (órkhis), literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the root. Carl Linnaeus classified the family as Orchidaceae. Orchid was introduced in 1845 by John Lindley in School Botany, due to an incorrect attempt to extract the Latin stem (orchis) from Orchidaceae. The Greek myth of Orchis explains the origin of the plants. Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysus (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysus. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower.

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's use of an obscenity, "coglioni", to denigrate his adversaries raised the heat of campaigning on Tuesday five days ahead of a general election.
Berlusconi, during an address to a shopkeepers' group, used a slang word for testicles to describe center-left voters but the term is commonly used as a crude insult to describe someone of little intelligence.
Common translations of "coglioni" in British and American dictionaries range from "idiot", "cretin", "fool" and "moron" to "prick" and "asshole".
"I have too much esteem for the intelligence of Italians to think that they could be such 'coglioni' to vote against their own interests," Berlusconi told the group. "Excuse my rough but efficient language."
The incident rocketed to the top of the national news and center-left politicians led by former European Commission President Romano Prodi criticized Berlusconi, who is behind in the latest opinion polls.
"With all the respect I have for (Berlusconi's) voters I would never use that anatomical term we heard today used about us," Prodi said.
"Berlusconi is no longer fit to lead our country."

Berlusconi, who has repeatedly accused his opponents of showering him with insults during the election campaign, later defended himself, saying his comments were intended to be "ironic" and were being "manipulated". His spokesman said an opposition politician had used the same word recently.
The Democrats of the Left (DS), the largest party in the center left, said Berlusconi owed an apology to the more than 16 million Italians who did not vote for him in the 2001 elections.

This photograph is quite obviously family friendly but my description might not be for everyone. It concerns 'mens health' issues. Not something I'd usually discuss I suppose. But as us fellas are notoriously bad at discussing their health, especially in certain bodily areas and therefore I am going to buck the trend. In this way I hope to do my tiny bit (not a euphemism) towards an openness that would serve all of us guys better!
Ok, so for the past ten days or so I have been experiencing a painful left testicle. (See, I SAID it wasn't for everyone but you went on reading didn't you! You've only got yourself to blame). Despite hoping it would go away, it didn't, and I had to make an appointment with the doctor. Nothing serious, thankfully, and just a course of anti-biotics to go through.
Before the appointment I was a little nervous and it is fair to say that the worst outcomes did spring to mind. I can imagine that for some the embarrassment factor of being checked would have proved too much. But I would urge everyone (with the neccessary equipment) to check for abnormalities regularly, and don't worry about going to the docs if something is painful or amiss!
On a lighter note, after my inspection with the doctor, he concluded it was a common issue that could be treated and he asked me if I had any allergies. I said I was fine with antibiotics, but that if had a nut allergy he was seriously in trouble.
Once I'd left the surgery, I sent a text to my friend Steve, whose 'support' I had sought in the lead up to the appointment. On heading that I'd had the all clear he replied that he was disappointed he'd not have the opportunity next time we meet to sing the wartime song 'Hitler has only got one ball.' I don't know, with friends like these....
I saw my Grandma later on and I recounted the tale of the day. I don't imagine it to be the sort of thing many would talk to their Gran about, but you can tell my Grandma anything. That's not to say she wants hear about any 'Gentleman's issues' YOU may have, just that I can tell her anything about ME. I wasn't giving permission for you to use her as a sounding board for your issues. Just to be clear. She asked which doctor it was I'd seen. 'Wait until I see him next', she declared. 'I'll say, Oi! You! What have you been doing with my Grandson's balls!' Well, she's 86 and says what she thinks and she's a good laugh is my Gran.
So, while I could have chosen to write something far less personally embarrassing, I decided upon this subject because men so rarely do. And there is never anything that will get worse if you go to the doctor, it can only get better!

Orchidaceae is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Yes, I know. You think I am an evil human being. Never again be told lies, half truths and conspiracy theory laden statements to create fear in those who are wont to believe his sort of trash. At least, those were and still are my thoughts. I certainly wouldn’t want another human to harm him, as then he would become a martyr to his cult, a Jim Jones of politics with statues erected in the parks of small towns in every red state. (Insert vomiting sounds here!)
To me, it’s absolutely appalling to see the people who are usually publicly condemning him, other politicians, media people and so, so many of us ‘little folk” on social media who are shocked and sickened by him, his actions and the vast lies he tells, the dastardly deeds he does, the illegalities, financially and constitutionally, he is alleged to have made and the threats he continues to make, appalled that those same people are now ‘sending their prayers’, ‘best wishes for a speedy recovery”, ‘healing thoughts’ and other sappy Hallmark sentiments while you know damn well they are muttering under their breath, ‘Die, Die You Motherfucker’. But I understand their predicament. Being public figures they don’t want a backlash on their careers, their place in government or their particular religious beliefs on wishing someone dead. Me, I have no such boundaries. I do not subscribe to any past or present mythologies that cloud my logic as to what is right and what is wrong. And trump is wrong. Dead wrong.
I am not evil. In fact, based on what others think of me, I am a very good person. A nice person. Caring, kind, very aware and very respectful of the natural world around me and the life that is in it. I’m also aware that Donald J. Trump is the most dangerous threat to Democracy and freedom that this country, the United States of America, has ever seen. If Mother Nature does decide to eliminate that threat on a permanent basis, I’m all for it and am cheering her on. Rah-Rah Mother Nature! But I’m not holding out hope that she will permanently remove him from this mortal coil. With all the help and medical support anyone could wish for, I’m sure he will make a total recovery…..UNLESS…….
Being the consummate liar that is trump, it wouldn’t surprise me one iota to discover he is not really COVID19 positive. That he is totally faking it, creating another sham to avoid having to deal with another debate debacle, or maybe just a show to gain sympathy from his cult to gain votes from those who may have been swayed a bit with his White Supremacy support or his tax evasion or the fact he is the main reason for the misinformation circulating across the US regarding COVID19 along with his downplaying of the disease from the get go; even though he knew full well how dangerous and deadly it was, he thereby condemned to death thousands more people who may have survived if proper precautions had been taken early on instead of being ignored or mocked. Only time will tell.
I do hope Melania totally recovers from her symptoms, if she, too, really has them. I wish no ill will on her. A 2nd Century AD statue of Artemis of Ephesus is on the right side of the gallery across from a statue of Diana (the Roman version of this Greek goddess) as the goddess of the hunt. Artemis was worshiped in Ephesus mainly as a fertility goddess.
The sarcophagus here dates from about 160 AD and depicts scenes from the story of Orestes. In the myth, Prince Orestes kills his own mother, Clytemnestra, as vengeance for the murder of his father, Agamemnon.

This is the drop-tine buck that we've been watching for a few weeks. Recently, his drop-tines had balls at the ends that looked almost like an extra set of testicles. I was told that those balls were most likely blood collection and that proved true. After rubbing off his velvet, his drop-tines are now pointed, as they were a few weeks back. He's a 16 to 18-pointer, non-typical.

These flowers were previously called Orchis, Satyrion (Satyrion feminina), or "ballockwort".
