Rebecca Preisler, science undergraduate laboratory intern 2013 from Lewis University, is performing reciprocating tests using steel tribological specimens (cylinders, balls, pins) using a sensitive data acquisition machine. Loads up to 1800 N are possible and continuous measurements are made of vertical force, friction force, specimen position, and temperature. A heater can be used to raise the temperature of the sliding contact to 100 degrees C.
Have you ever wondered how those little, colorful battery tester strips work? They're thermochromic: they change color according to the temperature. When you press the contacts, you complete a circuit, causing a current to flow through the tester. The more energy left in the battery, the bigger the current, the hotter the strip, and the higher the reading.
This comes from our article about how thermochromic materials work.

These V Adapters were discovered by a friend of mine in a barn full of surplus electronics. All in New Old Stock condition, I believe them to be rather rare. Later Stark 9-66's could be bought with these panels already installed at the factory or you could buy them separately to install yourself on an earlier model.
Bought this from a gentleman around the corner who later turned out to be a good friend. I have no idea how this works, just what it states on the case. I don't work with selenium rectifiers much so it's basically a dust collector. As always, the day I get rid of it, I'll need it.
The cleanest example of this tester I've ever seen. The outside doesn't have so much as a nick in the tolex cover. This one differs from my other CX as the tubes sockets are black rather than red. The meter is also slightly different in that it says Stark-Hickok. The only meter of this vintage that I've seen like that. I acquired this tester from ebay on a "Buy it Now"
I haven't started the scissor case yet but i made a tester piece because i knew the pattern for the felt case & crocheted part would be too small for my scissors (partially with using thread, rather than the weight of yarn the pattern calls for).
I'm probably going to find another triangular pattern for the scissor case or make up my own. The little case I made isn't the same shape as the scissor pattern case obviously (I just made my own case pattern to fit the triangular bit).
Ran into a batch of ShiftBrite cables with a few bad ones. I needed to test all of them so I made a simple tester. It just runs a single circuit through all the wires in the cable and lights an LED. I made it in a few minutes and tested about 300 cables in 30 minutes.
This 9-55 must have been an earlier model than the other one I have posted on here. It doesn't have the added test features.

These are chock-full of all kinds of good stuff - 11 of the ingredients are on the WHFoods list! There's omega 3's from the flax and sunflower seeds, fibre from the whole wheat and oats, potassium and lots of vitamins from the fruit and even antioxidants from the blueberries and chocolate chips I tossed in! Maca root powder is an ptional ingredient that's also touted as a "superfood" for the hormonal system, helping regulate metabolism, energy levels, growth, sexual development and general sense of well being.
This test board for the micro-readerboard has the 17-segment LED display (socketed) on one side, and a 20-pin DIP ZIF socket on the other side. This allows one to quickly swap out the chip, and to swap out the display if needed. A 2xAA battery box powers the system.

A better shot of the face. A previous owner made a pair of covers for the L & R controls. Underneath the numbering is perfect.
Hemmed in by large, black BMW saloons for private hire (their drivers waiting at the petrol station shop) I spy an interesting looking small yellow car.
A search reveals the purpose of the vehicle: the laser devices and lowerable wheels detect ruts in road surfaces. It's proximity to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport suggest it may have been used to test their runways. Note the large Trimble badged GPS antenna on the roof and the LED warning lamps on the upper tailgate.
An extract from here: www.koac-npc.com/Flex/Site/Page.aspx?PageID=29166&Lan...
"Rutting, or transverse unevenness, is the permanent deformation in the road caused by great repetition of heavy trucks leaving ruts in the asphalt or block paving. Passenger cars experience great hindrance from rutting, because they do not quite fit in the ruts, which influences the steering behaviour of the car. Rutting is hazardous in rainy weather, due to large puddles forming in the tracks, which can cause aquaplaning at high speeds. If the foundation or deeper lying layers become deformed, this becomes visible on the surface in broad ruts with shallow flanks. The higher the deformation in the construction, the narrower the ruts and steeper the flanks.
KOAC•NPC can visually assess the rutting. We can measure the rut depth objectively per 5 m, at normal traffic speeds, using the ARAN (Automatic Road Analyser). Rut depths can be calculated under a 1.20 m beam, in the transverse profile measured over a traffic lane, but so too can water layer depths.
For a more detailed study of the causes of rutting, we take a measurement using the Flatmate. The Flatmate records the road profile over 2.25 m, at the project level. This test is generally combined with sequential drilling for allocation of the source of the deformation."
Empire Test Pilots School Hawker-Siddeley Andover C.1 XS606 seen at Shoreham in July 1981 during their annual visit to Singer Link-Miles at nearby Lancing.
This aircraft is fitted with an extended nose mounted pitot tube for use with the ETPS syllabus in giving additional aerodynamic data to the student pilots. It is also in the kneeling position, an ability the Andover had to allow easier access to it's rear ramp for loading.
Back then, Singer Link-Miles was a significant player in the Aircraft Simulation industry - long before computers were making in-roads into their product, each cockpit simulator had a full-blown 3D model to which cameras linked to the simulator traversed the model to make it look as though the machine was flying over actual terrain. The models were stacked vertically and housed intially in their production line which was based in the old Lancing Railway Carriage Works. Once computer graphics took over such a sizeable complex was a costly entity to run and Link-Miles gradually lost their lead and went to the wall some years later.

I picked this tube tester up on ebay for $10 a couple of years ago. Overpaid by $8. Not a very good tube tester in my opinion. I had to remove every push button on the face and file them down due to swelling. It won't test very many tube types either. It took me months to finally find a manual and when I did I copied it and had it posted on BAMA. Far better tube testers out there.
