2009 got off to an extra lousy start.

I lost about 1 terabyte of data when I started using a new 4-bay external harddisk enclosure on Saturday. 3 of the harddisks became inaccessible and the cryptic error message was "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Well thank you Microsoft.

A free and useful program "TestDisk" revealed both the MFT and MFT mirror are damaged. Short of purchasing a data recovery program, I am wondering if there is anything clever I can attempt after CHKDSK also gave up on me. I am very sure this is a software issue and I know the data is somewhere in the mist.

My last backup was more than 2 months ago. A conservative estimate puts a recovery of more than 10,000 files. This royally sucks.

Before I get back to sunrises and sunsets, permit me to break with this bit of street photography. Actually, it wasn't "street" per se but in our local farmers market. What a smile on this guy and what an odd assortment of edibles.

As for the new Flickr, here is my two cents.

I think it was high past time to upgrade the site, which looked very old by modern standards. For me, just seeing photos larger by default and on black is a treat. I am also finding that I can now peruse my contacts more effectively from within Flickr rather than using Fluidr or some such. I may switch back to Fluidr, but at least Flickr is in the game now. Nothing has been taken away that I can see. You just have to look for it, and you'll get used to it in no time. And a terabyte of storage for free ain't bad y'know. Change can be difficult but it is often good. Give it a few days.

When I moved into my place, one of the challenges was to find a separate room in my loft for working and computing. The only place that was secluded was the laundry room, which only measures about 67 inches wide, certainly enough for a washer and dryer side by side but not enough for a traditional desk.

Goals:

- Had to fit in a small confined space.

- No clutter, Minimal amount of paper (by scanning all paperwork)

- Looks awesome =)

- Can check and do laundry while on the computer. =)

A problem was finding a narrow enough desk that did not block the door way and door so i could still close the door if needed but was also wide enough to accomodate all my needs.

I eventually found a CB2 desk that measured 21 inches by 55 inches that fit EXACTLY into the space provided. For a while I had the extra monitor vertically mounted into the wall, but I liked the ability to vertically adjust the position with the stock desk mount provided.

I decided on a color scheme of red, grays, and various blacks, and thus decided to paint the wall of the laundry room a light gray color.

Because of the lack of horizontal space, I went vertical, installing a bright red shelf above my area to provide additional storage.

Hardware:

- Macbook Pro 15 (I used to be a die-hard PC builder until a year and a half ago. I made the transition suddenly when I realized I no longer had any interest in building my own systems)

- 20 inch wide LCD (Needs replacing to a newer one)

- ratzpad mousepad

- MX revolution mouse

-Logitech denovo edge keyboard

- 1.5 terabyte WD harddrive in dock.

- Canon MX860 Printer

Out of sight:

- Shredder

- Gigabit ethernet on dlink gaming router.

- Separate wifi access point using Linksys

- ATT Microcell (no reception this deep inside the building)

- QNAP TS-101 NAS (in living room) with 750 gig sata drive connected via gigabit ethernet

Type of work done:

- Basic common household tasks

- PHP development

- Web design

The Markthal was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides; these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe. Each facade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal cables. The facade was designed and installed by Octatube.

The inside of the building is adorned with an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty). The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects.

The artwork was selected out of 9 international candidates. The work was made using digital 3D-techniques. This enormous file of 1,47 terabytes needed special servers, which are also used by Pixar Studios for making animated movies. The digital 3D-animation was separated in 4000 pieces and then printed on perforated aluminum panels. The 4000 aluminum panels are now on the inside of the hall. Right after the opening in 2014, the artwork got a lot of attention from around the world. Some called it The largest artwork in the world or The Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.

The Market Hall in Rotterdam is situated between Binnenrotte , Hoogstraat and Blaak . It is a residential and commercial building with indoor market hall . The opening took place on October 1, 2014 by Queen Máxima . In addition to an indoor market, the complex houses 228 apartments , 4,600 m² of retail space , 1600 m² hospitality and parking for more than a thousand cars.

The Market Hall was designed by architects MVRDV . The gray stone building has an arch shape as a horseshoe . It has both faces a glass façade. The laminated glass panels, most of which are square and 1 485 millimeters wide, are hung in a cable net facade of 34 meters high and 42 meters wide, which thus is the largest in Europe. Each façade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal lines.

Artwork

The inner facade of the Market Hall is lined with a 11,000 m2 (two football fields) great artwork of Arno Coenen , entitled Cornucopia. This title refers to the Cornucopia , a horn from the Latin mythology that symbolizes abundance and saturation. [5] The artwork shows highly magnified fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, flowers and insects. In the background is the tower of the Laurens church to see. The artist tried with his piece "that childlike sense of wonder you had when you used to Erik and Insects Book [sic] read or Alice in Wonderland "recall. [6] According to the atheistic Coenen is his work "a worship of Nature, an ode to the universe, "which he calls" just as impressive and divine "as the story of creation . [6]

Artwork Coenen was selected from nine international candidates. [7] For the production of the animation uses digital 3D techniques. To render the huge file of 1.47 terabyte servers were used which are also used for the films of Pixar Studios . [6] The digital animation was divided into blocks and printed on perforated steel, 4,000 panels.

In 2014 international media attention arose before. [8] [9] [10] Some publications called it the greatest work of art in the world "(a claim that is probably not true) [10] or "the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam '. Arno Coenen has realized work in collaboration with a team of six specialists.

Hello everyone, this is my long awaited Cyber Sushi MOC, a cyberpunk custom build that I worked on throughout 2018 and early 2019. The concept is basically a sushi restaurant located on top of four large pillars in the middle of a cyberpunk city district with smaller buildings. If I recall correctly I was inspired to do this by some Ninjago Movie concept art or just cyberpunk concept art in general which I consume by the terabytes. I personally loved this MOC and it was one of my biggest accomplishments of the era, it doesn't have any motorized functions but it does include a battery box with lighting for the interior as well as color-changing RGBs in the front glass window which can be seen in the following video. Some of you might already be familiar with it because I did do a full walkthrough on my YouTube channel which you can check out here youtu.be/YpBEzlLBm1s

I'm glad I can finally share the photos with all of you, and I hope you like it! I plan on writing individual captions and details for each photo but since I'm uploading a huge batch it'll take some time to write but stay tuned for more MOCs as well as a big announcement that I'm making soon. I'm so happy to be back in the community after all these years and I want to contribute more creations to the global LEGO Moc community.

Long Live LEGO!

From the placard:

The Night Watch

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669)

Oil on canvas, 1642

Rembrandt's largest and most famous painting was made for one of the three headquarters of Amsterdam's civic guard. These groups of civilian soldiers defended the city from attack. Rembrandt was the first to paint all of the figures in a civic guard piece in action. The captain, dressed in black, gives the order to march out. The guardsmen are getting into formation. Rembrandt used the light to focus on particular details, like the captain's gesturing hand and the young girl in the foreground. She was the company mascot. The nickname Night Watch originated much later, when the painting was thought to represent a nocturnal scene.

------------------------------------

This work is officially called Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq or The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch. It hold pride of place in the Rijksmuseum, in a room custom-built to hold it. Surprisingly, it does not actually belong to the Rijksmuseum; it belongs to the Amsterdam Museum. The frieze gives a capsule bio of Rembrandt as it wends its way around the room.

The group portrait was a thing in 17th century Amsterdam. But here, instead of a pedestrian composition showing everybody lined up for a posed shot (like the accompanying example in the gallery), Rembrandt depicts the company in action.

"The Night Watch" is a misnomer: the painting depicts a daytime scene but has darkened over time due to a the use of a fugitive pigment (perhaps the smalt blue? The docent talked about it, but alas, I don't recall the details). It is under intensive conservation -- Operation Night Watch. So far it has been taken off its stretcher, flattened, and restretched via springs attached to a new aluminum stretcher. The tension in each spring can be monitor and individually adjusted to keep the painting under uniform tension. All the work was done here in its home gallery, inside the protective glass booth. The painting is now being scanned at insanely high resolution by various imaging modalities, including X-ray fluorescence. The investigators expect to generate ~600 terabytes of data.

The Night Watch first hung in the Great Hall of the militia headquarters. In 1715, the painting was moved to the Amsterdam Town Hall, for which it was trimmed on all four sides to fit between two columns. This alteration resulted in the loss of two characters on the left side of the painting and shifted the main figures close to the center of the canvas, changing the original asymmetric composition.

The painting was removed from the Rijksmuseum at the outset of World War II. The canvas was detached from its frame and rolled around a cylinder (which gives modern-day conservationists the heebie-jeebies, but desperate times call for desperate measures). The rolled painting was stored along with other artworks for four years in a special safe in the caves of Maastricht, the Netherlands.

So my terabyte drive that I have been storing all of my photos on for 2013 as well as video footage for my video production class, fell out of my locker today and stopped working. I brought it to our professional computer tech guy at my church and he took the drive out of the case and plugged it in and listened to it and stuff to find out what was wrong. He discovered that something within the drive, the magnetic needle reader or possibly part of the data disc itself has been knocked out of place or something and it was making a clicking noise, meaning that it is unable to read, or write, any data on it. Apparently, if you open up a hard drive you can highly risk completely ruining the data disc and stuff. Now, he said there is probably some company out there that will be able to fix it so I can obtain all my photos and such, but it will probably cost a whole lot of money. He mentioned another method I can look into, to basically freeze the hard drive for a few hours or so and hopefully that will shrink or condense the metal so that it might go back in to place. But I am unsure of it all. I am super depressed right now... and to make it worse, all of mine and two of my other friends in my video production class had all of our final project footage on it and it wasn't backed up any where, and the final is due tomorrow, and tomorrow is also our last day of school.... ughh... If I don't have some kind of a final project, Josey and I may fail the class. We'll have to talk to him...

This really sucks though. I hate this. My electric guitar broke a few weeks ago too. Thankfully my best friend and his dad build guitars and will be able to fix that... but this... this is light burned onto an image sensor. They are moments of time contained digitally and contain so many words and thoughts. I know somehow Jesus will use this for good though. I have faith that he has got my back.

It's official: Google is being completely fascist. The surprise updates out of nowhere is getting really annoying. That and they don't even seem to care for what the users have to say anymore. No one liked the new Youtube layout designs, but Google went ahead anyways, especially with that new searchbar update. Don't know what I mean? Go to Youtube, watch a video, doesn't matter what video it is, and type something into the searchbar at the top. I don't know if it's just me, but no matter how many times you click "search", nothing happens. That's because Google applied so many "upgrades" to it, it's no more than a decoration now. that and the videos never seem to load either. And another thing, Google made some updaye for Google Images that looks like an imitation of Bing, and it makes my computer lag like crazy when I use it. It can't be because I have too much stuff on it, Because I've hardly used any space on it's 1-terabyte hard drive. And the worst thing is, no matter what you do, no matter what you say, They will not change it back. It's like telling me to sell my Garand, It just won't happen. So, in a nutshell, that is why I hate Google. If you've had any bad experience with Youtube's current dictator, leave me a comment and tell me everything.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MANIFESTO GLEITZEIT 2015

BY STELLY RIESLING

Featured below is another original art work of mine in homage to THE PIONEER OF INVISIBLE ART — PAUL JAISINI. Forget all the copycats that came after him — Master Paul Jaisini was the *FIRST* of a totally original concept and the *BEST*. My favorite thing about him is that he’s a voice, not an echo, which is quite rare.

DISCLAIMER: This is for anyone who is a hater OR wishes to better understand me, what I’m all about, so you can decide whether I’m weird or normal enough for you — a kind of very loose manifesto, rushed and unrevised, full of raw uncut emotion that I don’t like to be evident in my writing as lately I prefer a more professional, formal style, so we can consider this a rough draft of the more polished writing to come when I have extra time. I might return to this text later and clean it up or break it into separate parts. Right now it’s a long-winded hot mess, so if you manage to make any sense of it, BIG PROPS TO YOU. lol …and if you manage to read it ALL, you have my solemn respect!!! in a day when reading has been reduced to just catchy headliners and short captions of images once in a while. The consequence of this one-liner internet culture is non-linear, tunnel thinking, which is baaaaaad.

There lives among us a most enigmatic and charismatic creature named Paul Jaisini who led me into the wonderful world of art, not personally, but through descriptions of his artworks in essays written and published online by his friend, which painted the most fascinating images in my mind. Early on as a kiddo, I experimented with photography, simple point and shoot whatever looked attractive to me. Digital manipulation of my photographs with computer software followed… and somehow I learned useful drawing techniques along the way to combine existing elements with nonexistent ones, which allowed me to elevate the context for my ideas. Later, I started creating my own digital art from scratch for my friends and family as a favorite pastime. They would shower me with praise and repeatedly encouraged me to share my “different” vision with the rest of the world… it took a while and wasn’t easy to overcome the insecurity of not being good enough along with a gripping fear of being harshly criticized, but one day I woman-ed up and started publishing my work on the web, reminding myself that my livelihood didn’t depend on a positive reception.

Paul Jaisini’s role in all this has been to not disgrace myself, even if what I do is just a hobby. And I would never do him and other genius artists the disservice of calling myself a professional because I know I’ll never be as good as any of the GIANTS of pre-modern history. Be the best or be nothing, no middle ground.

People’s jealousy in the past, future and present over my obsessive love of Paul Jaisini, which they are well aware is purely plutonic, has caused them to despise the man and has made many relationships/friendships impossible for me. I refuse to have such people in my life because by harboring any negativity towards Paul, they unknowingly feel that way about me and express it to me. It’s their own problem for not realizing this. Paul’s new art movement, Gleitzeit, shaped me into the allegedly awesome girl I am today, giving my art more edge, more “sexy” because it refined my vision of the world and propelled me to attain the skills necessary to not dishonor my family name through tenacious pursuit of perfection. Since the beginning of my life, I attempted to depict what I saw in visual, musical and literal forms, but continuously failed without adequate training and determination. Paul Jaisini’s Gleitzeit was the answer to my prayers. Who I am today I owe mostly to him and his selfless ideals of the artverse that I’ve given unconditional loyalty to (he has this cool ability for hyper-vision to see whole universes, not itty bitty worlds, hence I call it an artverse instead of art world, with him in mind). So again, anyone who hates Paul Jaisini hates ME because, regardless of what he means to you, he is the most important person in my life for making me ME. The way a famous actor, dancer or singer inspires others to act, dance or sing, Paul inspired me to become a better artist, better writer, better everything. More people would understand if he was a household name because they’re wired to in society. But we’re inspiring each other all the time in our own little communities without being famous, so if someone has the ability to change even ONE person’s life immensely with creativity, it is a massive achievement. And passionate folks like myself are compelled to scream it from the cyber rooftops. So here I am. It’s whatever.

Furthermore, I’d like to address here a few pressing matters in light of some recent drama brought on by both strangers and former friends. To start, I never judge the passions, interests or likes of others, which are often in my face all over the place, so likewise they have no right to judge any of mine. It is quite unfortunate and frustrating how very little understanding and education the majority of people have or want to have. Their logic is as primitive as a chipmunk when it comes to promotion of fine art on the web: “spamming, advertising, report!” It’s their own problem that they fail to understand what it’s about due to the distorted lens through which they see the world or inability to think for themselves; an inherent lack of perception or inquisitiveness. Well, guess what? Every single image, every animation, every video, every post dedicated to Mr. Paul Jaisini and “Gleitziet” (to elaborate: a revolutionary new art movement Paul founded with his partner in crime and personal friend, EYKG, who discovered him and believed in him more than anyone) has an important purpose. Every one of those things you run across is a piece of a puzzle, a move in a game, an inch down a rabbit hole; the deeper you go, the more interesting it gets; the more levels you pass, the more clues unfold, the greater the suspense and nearer the conclusion (yet further). You earn awesome rewards like enlightenment, spiritual revelations, truths, knowledge, wisdom and the most profound reward of all: the drive to improve yourself to the absolute maximum, so an unending, unshakable drive. People often make a wrong turn in this cyber game and go back a few levels or get stuck. Those that keep on pushing, however, will come to find the effort has been worth it. And what awaits you in the end of it all? The greatest challenge to beating the game: YOUR OWN MIND. You will be forced to let go of every belief you held before you had reached the last level, to completely alter your mindset and perception of the world, of life, of yourself. But by the time you’ve gotten to that point, it will be as easy as falling off a cliff! (It is a kind of suicide after all — death and rebirth of spirit.)

Paul Jaisini does NOT, *I repeat* does NOT use mystery and obscurity to his advantage as a clever marketing ploy, no, he’s too next level for that with a consciousness so rich, he should wear a radioactive warning sign (he’ll melt your brain, best wear a tinfoil hat in his presence as I certainly would.) The statement he makes is loud and clear, hidden in plain site for those who take the time to connect the dots and have enough curiosity to fuel their journey into unknown territory (an open mind and flexible perception helps a lot). Actually, anyone with an IQ above 90 is sure to figure it out sooner or later. Hint: You don’t have to SEE an extraordinary thing with your eyes to know it exists, to understand it and realize its greatness — you can only feel it in your bone marrow, your spinal fluid, your heart and soul. The moment you do figure it out, as the skeleton key of the human soul, it will unlock the greatness and massive potential buried deep within, changing the doomed direction humanity is undoubtedly headed. I don’t speak in riddles, I speak in a clear direct way that intelligent humans will understand, so I’m counting on them.

GIG is an international group of artists and writers that support Paul Jaisini’s Gleitzeit. We started off as an unofficial fan club of Jaisini in 1996, comprised of only 6 individuals spanning 3 countries, and eventually escalated in status to an official fan group across the entire globe. A decade later it had grown to hundreds of fans. Nearly another decade later, there are thousands. Let’s not leave out another delightful group of vicious haters that have been around for nearly as long as us since the late 90s and have also grown in impressive numbers. Now, for the record (and please write this one down because I’m sick of repeating myself), Paul Jaisini himself is not part of our group and has nothing to do with us. He loves and hates us equally for butchering his name and making him appear as a narcissistic nut-job in his own words. He casts hexes on us for the blinding flash we layer over the art that members contribute to GIG — “disgusting-police-lights, seizure-inducing-laser-lightshow, bourgeois-myspace-effects retarded-raver shit” in Paul’s words. Ahh, how we love his sweet-talking us. In a desperate attempt to please him, those among us who make the art and animations have spent countless hours and sleepless nights trying to solve a crazy-complex quantum-physics type of equation = how to not create tacky or tasteless content. He does fancy some of it now, we got better, that’s something! In the reason stated below, our mission just got out of hand at some point.

What little is known about Paul Jaisini, even in all this time, is he’s a horrible perfectionist who slaughtered hundreds of innocent babies — I mean — artworks of remarkable beauty created by his own right hand (mostly paintings, some watercolors and drawings). He’s a fierce recluse who wants nothing to do with anyone or anything in life. But those few of us who know of an incredible talent he possesses (one could go as far as calling it a superpower), could not allow him to live his life without the recognition he FUCKING DESERVES more than any artist out there living today and, arguably, yesterday. We use whatever means necessary to reach more people, lots of flash and razzle-dazzle to lure them into our sinister trap of a higher awareness. Mwahaha! The visual boom you’ve witnessed in both cyber and real worlds, that is GIG’s doing — two damn decades of spreading an art virus — IVA. InVisibleArtitis… or a drug as in Intravenous Art. It’s whatever you want it to be, honey.

Our Gleitzeit International Group (GIG) started off innocently enough and gradually spiraled out of control to fight the haters, annoying the hell out of them as much as humanly possible. They don’t like what we do? WE DO MORE AND MORE OF IT. But never without purpose, without a carefully executed plan in mind collectively. If we have to tolerate an endless tidal wave of everyone’s vomit — e.g., idiotic memes and comics; dumbed-down one-liner quotes; selfies; so-called “art photography” passed through one-click app filters; mindless scribbles or random splatters by regular folks who have the nerve to call themselves serious/pro artists; primitive images of pets, babies, landscapes, random objects, etc… then people sure as shit are gonna tolerate what we put out, our animated and non-animated visual art designed for our beloved master, Paul Jaisini, who has shown us the light, the right path to follow, taught us great things and done so much for us — and so in our appreciation of him, we stamp his name on everything, for the sacrifices he has made in the name of art, to save our art verse, he’s a goddamn hero. There’s a book being written in his dedication where little will be left to the imagination about him.

If Paul Jaisini was as famous as Koons or Hirst, for example, people would know it’s not him posting stuff online with his name on it but fans creating fanart like myself among others. But noooooo, such a thing is unfathomable to most people - the promotion of another artist. Like, what’s in it for us? Uhh, nothing?? This is all NON-PROFIT bitches, the way art should be. It’s a passion FIRST, a commodity/commercial product/marketable item LAST and least. Its been that way for us since the early 90s to this day. Not a single member of GIG has sold an art work (neither has Paul Jaisini who’s a true professional) and we want to keep it that way. We do it for reasons far beyond ego. So advertising? Really? How the hell do you advertise or sell thin air, you know, invisible paintings, invisible anything? Ha ha, very funny indeed. The idea here is so simple, your neighbor’s dog can grasp it. Our motives: replace fast food for the mind with fine art, actual fine art. You know, creativity? Conscious thought? Talent? Skill? Knowledge? All that good stuff rolled into one to bring viewers more than a momentary ooohand aaahh reaction. Replace the recycled images ad nauseum; repetitious, worn-out ideas; disposable, gimmicky, money-driven fast art for simpletons. Stick with the highest of ideals and save the whole bloody planet.

Fine art is often confused with craft-making. This often creates bad blood between classically trained artists who put out paintings that leave a lasting impression, that make strong conversation pieces, that are thought-provoking and deep… and trained craftspeople whose skills are adequate to create decorative pieces for homely environments — landscapes, still lifes, animals, pretty fairies, common things of fantasy, and other simplicity. Skills alone are not enough for high art, you need a vision, a purpose, the ability to tell a story with every stroke of your brush that will both fascinate and terrify the viewers, arousing powerful emotions, illuminating. I have yet to see a visible painting in my generation that does anything at all for me, other than evoke sheer outrage and disgust. What a terrible waste of space and valuable resources it all is.

Paul Jaisini leads, we follow. He wishes to remain unknown - so do most of us. I’m next in line, slipping into recluse mode, no longer wanting to attach my face, my human image to my art stuff. I wish to be a nameless, faceless artist as well, invisible like P.J., and in his footsteps I too have destroyed thousands of my own artistic photography and digital art made with tedious, labor-intensive handwork. The whole point of this destruction is achieving the finest results possible by letting go of the imperfect, purging it on a regular basis, to make way for the perfect. I love what I do so it doesn’t matter, I know I’ll keep producing as much as I’m discarding, keeping the balance. Hoarding is an enemy of progress, especially the digital kind as there’s absolutely no limit to it. It’s like carrying a load of bricks on your back you’ll never use or need.

The watering down of creativity that digital pack ratting has caused as observed over the years is most tragic. For the creative individual, relying on terabytes of stock photos or OSFAP as I call them (Once Size Fits All Photos) instead of making your own as you used to when you had no choice, being 100% original, is a splinter in the conscience. It’s not evil to use stock of, say, things you don’t have access to (outer space, deep sea, Antarctica, etc.), but many digital artists I know today can’t take their own shot of a pencil ‘cause they “ain’t got no time for that!” How did they have time before? Did time get so compressed in only a decade?

Ohhhhh, and the edits, textures, filters, plug-ins and what-have-you available out there to everyone and their cats… are responsible for the tidal wave of rubbish that eclipses the magnificent light of the real talents.

I can tell you with utmost sincerity there is no better feeling on earth than knowing your creation is ALL yours, every pixel and dot, from the first to the last. It’s not always possible to make it so, but definitely the most rewarding endeavor. I’m most proud of myself when I can accomplish that.

Back to Paul Jaisini, from the start there have been a number of theories floating around on what his real story is. One of my own theories is that he stands for the unknowns of the world who can’t get representation, can’t get exhibited at a decent gallery because highly gifted/trained artists aren’t good enough - those kind of establishments prefer bananas, balloon dogs, feces, gigantic dicks/cunts, and all kinds of what-the-fucks…

So again, you don’t get the Paul Jaisini thing? That’s your problem. Don’t hate others for getting it. People are good, very good, at making baseless assumptions and impulsively spewing it as truth. They criticize and judge as if they’re high authorities on the subject yet they clearly lack education in fine art or art history and possess little to no talent or skill to back up their bullshit. My little “credibility radar” never fails. When they say I know this or I know that, I reply don’t say “I know” or state things as fact as a general rule of thumb - instead say “I assume/believe” and state the reasons you feel thus to appear less immature, especially about a controversial topic like invisible art. I have zero respect or tolerance for egomaniacs who think they know it all and act accordingly like arrogant pricks. Who can stand those, right? Once again, a good example would be: I, Stelly Riesling, believe everything I’ve written in this little manifesto to be correct based on personal experience and observation from multiple angles, thorough research and sufficient data collected from verifiable sources (and don’t go copying-pasting my own words back at me, be original). Just because you or I say so doesn’t make it so. Just because you or me think or believe so doesn’t make it true or right. I only ask that my opinions are regarded respectfully and whoever opposes them does so in a mature, civilized manner. We should only be entitled to opinions that don’t bring out the worst in us.

I don’t normally take such a position, but the time has come to stand up for what I believe in! It’s quite amusing and comical how haters think calling me names, attacking me or my interests or members of the project I’m part of for years is going to change something. It only makes more evident the importance of what I’m doing so I push on harder still.

Words of advise to those who can identify with me, with my frustrations over people’s reluctance to change their miserable ways, with our declining art world…

DON’T waste time on people who sweat the small stuff, whose actions are consistently inconsistent with their words. DO waste time on people who always keep their eye on the ball—the bigger picture of life.

Paul Jaisini’s invisible paintings are more than hype, more than your lame assumptions. Here’s one I got that’s pure gold: a cult! It started out as A JOKE OF MINE that was used against me. I told a then-good friend that he should come join our little “art cult” in a clearly lighthearted manner, and later he takes this idea I put in his head first and accuses me of being in an (imaginary) cult—the jokes on me eh?. But wait, aren’t cults religious? Our group consists of people around the world of different faiths (or none at all) so how could that ever work? If religion was about making fine (non-pop) art mainstream and bringing awesome, fresh, futuristic concepts to the collective consciousness, the world would not be so fucked up today because talent, creativity, originality and individuality would be the main focus, not superficial poppycock; those things would be praised and encouraged and supported in society by all institutions, not demonized and stigmatized.

Here is one thing I CAN state as solid fact: only one person close to Paul Jaisini knows the TRUE story, or at least some of it: EYKG. Everything else that has ever been said about him is myth, legend, gossip, speculation, the worst of which is said by jealous non-artists (wannabes, clones, posers, hang-ons, unoriginal ppl in general) and anti-artists (religious psychos, squares, losers and -duh- stupid ppl). Sadly, people are unable to see the bigger picture by letting their egos run their lives or repeating after others as parrots.

Commercial art, consumerism, and ignorance of the masses truly makes me want to curl up in a ball, not eat or drink or move until I die, just die in my sleep while dreaming of a better world, a world where real fine artists rule it with real fine art as they used to and life is beautiful once again….

Well I hope that settled THAT for now, or perhaps inadvertently made matters worse. I hope I didn’t sound too pissed from all these issues that keep popping up like penises on ChatRoulette… just got to me already! Can you tell? I had to put my foot down, stomp ‘em all!

To be continued, still lots more ignorance and pettiness to battle… Till then peace out my bambini. MWAH!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MANIFESTO GLEITZEIT 2015

PROLOGUE

Paul Jaisini was like a messiah, as you wish, who saw/understood the impending end and complete degeneration of Fine art or Art become and investment nothing more than that. He predicted the bubble pops art when everybody would eventually become an artist, including dogs cats and horses, because they as kids followed the main rule: express yourself without skills or knowledge or any aesthetic concerns. J. Pollack started pouring paints onto canvases; Julian Schnabel, former cab driver from NY, suddenly decided he could do better than what he saw displayed in galleries, so he started gluing dishes on canvases; A.Warhol, an industrial artist who made commercial silk-screen for the factories he worked in, started to exhibit "Campbell's soup" used for commercial adds... and later the thing that made him an "American Idol": by copying and pasting Hollywood celebrities (same type of posters he made before for movie theaters).

When Paul Jaisini stood out against the Me culture in the US by burning all of his own 120 brilliant paintings (according to the then-new director of Fort Worth MoMa Museum, who offered hin an exhibition of his art in 1992, and later the Metropolitan Museum curator, Phillippe de Montebello, in 1994).Paul probably assumed all fellow true fine artists would join him or stand by him against corruption of the art world.

And after 20 years of his stand-off...the time has finally come today. Many artists and humanitarians around the world took a place beside him. His invisible Paintings became a synonym for the future reincarnation of fine art and long lost harmony. The establishment is in panic! The "moneybags" (as Paul Jaisini named them) are in panic, because they invested BILLIONS of dollars in real crap made by

craftsmen. Now they realize that the reputation of American legends of expressionism was nothing but a copy of Russian avant-garde" Kazimir Malevich, Vasiliy Kandinsky and tens of others from France and Germany.. US tycoon investors were spending billions on "Me more original, than you". "Artist Shit" is a 1061 artwork by the Italian artist Piero Manzoni. The work consists of 90 tin cans, filled with feces. A tin can was sold for £124,000, 180,000 at Sothebys, 2007.

EPILOGUE

Before I resume promoting and admiring a very important art persona on today's international art arena, I'd like to clear up some BIG questions; people ask continuously and subconsciously, directly & indirectly: "Why does the name Paul Jaisini, flood the Internet in such "obnoxious" quantities that it's started suppressing some other activities that my friends might share with the rest of the Internet's Ego Me only Me www society? I can't just answer this... so I'll try to explain why I'm writing this: Jaisini's followers keep posting art and info about,

He IMHO the only hope in quickly decomposing visual fine art. "Paul Jaisini realized many years ago, in 1994, when he declared (at that time to himself only) the start of a New era, a New vision, that he is trying to redirect from the rat race, started by an establishment in post-war New York, long before the Internet culture.

Sub related information: Adolf Gottlieb, Mart Rothko, etc (after visiting Paris France in 1933):

"We must forget analytical art, we must express ourselves, as a 5 year old child would, without a developed consciousness. Forget about results - do what you feel, EXPRESS yourself with your own unique style"

With this statement Mark Rothko starts to teach his students, degeneration of fine art begins, and the generation of war of styles took a start signal of the material race, greatly rewarded by establishment "individual" - eccentric craftsmen - show business clowns.

Sub related Information: In the summer of 1936, Adolf Gottlieb painted more than 800 paintings, which was 20X more than he created in his whole art career as a painter, starting from the time of Gottlieb becomes a founding member of "The Ten" group in NYC "Group of Ten" was a very peculiar, enigmatic group... Based on a religious point of view;(where a human figure was prohibited from being created)

GLOSSARY

IN 1997, Paul Jaisini's best friend Ellen Y.K.Gottlieb started a cyber campaign by promoting on a very young Internet, back then, Paul Jaisini's burned paintings as Invisible Paintings, visible only through poetic essays. She and a handful of people saw his originals and were devastated that nobody could ever see them again. "We, his fans, believe that someday Paul will recreate his 120 burned paintings if he has any decency and moral obligation to his fans, who have dedicated decades to make it happen, for their Phoenix to rise from the ashes and the whole world will witness that all these years we spent to get him back to re-paint the Visuals again were not in vain," - said E.Y.K.Gottlieb in 2014 during the 20th anniversary celebration of Invisible Paintings to GIGroup in NYCity. So now, hopefully, this clears up why I and others do what we do - our "cyber terrorism" of good art, dedicated to Paul Jaisini's return, which is & and was our mission & our goal. We post good art to fight "troll art" which is worthless pics, after being passed through 1-click filters of free web apps. We are, in fact, against this www pops pollution, done with "bubble art" by the out of control masses with 5 billon pics a day: Pics of cats, memes, quotes, national geographic sunsets and waterfalls, not counting their own daily "selfies: and whatever self-indulging Me-ego-Me affairs, sponsored happily by photo gadget companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony...who churn out higher quality madness tools at lower cost.

This way Government taking away attention from the real world crisis of lowest morality & economical devastation. The masses are too easily re-engineered/manipulated by the Establishment PopsStyle delivered to them by pop music and Hollywood "super" stars. In 1992 Paul Jaisini's Gleitzeit theory predict such a massive, pops self-entertain madness, following technologicalexplosion, but not in illusive scales.

Earlier in the summer I had noted that all of the year 'round resident Blue Herons seemed to have vanished. Quite a few outings resulted in NO sightings in their usual locations.

It was a relief to go into the woods Thursday, and discover they were back. Tromping through very overgrown weeds along the river, I startled four of them, and they took off in various directions. Being a bit more stealthy, I moved upriver a bit, through some more 'jungle', and found this young GBH doing some fishing. This one either wasn't old enough to be skittish, or it was concentrating so hard on the fish that I was not noticed. Getting closer than I expected, I did manage a few shots before it gulped and vamoosed.

On a different note, I've completed the external hard drive storage project. Installed the third new 3TB drive. I moved a 1TB and a 2TB external drive out to my shop computer, and retained one 2TB drive on the main system. With the tower's internal 2TB, I now have 13 terabytes of storage for photos...and many other things. (And all photo files are now stored in at least three different locations now.

Xzibit takes a 1990 Toyota Celica stuck in the 20th century and updates the ride with a sick computer setup and 2 terabytes of storage in her trunk. Taking flight the ride gets wings; Lamborghini doors that make it look like the Celica can fly.

Toyota Celica Fifth generation / T180 Series (1989–1993)

The fifth generation Celica was introduced in September 1989 for the 1990 model year. The Celica received new Super Round organic styling, upgraded wheels and tires, more powerful GT-Four (US: All-Trac) with better cooling system, and for the Japanese market only, the 4-Wheel Steering (4WS) models. Toyota engineers claimed that the round styling and lack of straight edges increased strength without adding weight. The styling was later copied by other manufacturers. Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) models were now S-R, Z-R, GT-R, Active Sports (first Toyota with Toyota Active Control Suspension), and GT-Four. The S-R and Z-R were powered by a 3S-FE engine, while the GT-R and Active Sports came with a 3S-GE. The 3S-GTE in the GT-Four features an air-to-air intercooler and CT26 twin entry turbo to eliminate exhaust gas interference. The JDM GT-Four has 165 kW (221 hp) and 304 N·m (224 lb·ft) of torque, a result of more aggressive ignition advance and ceramic turbine. The Full-time 4WD system in the GT-Four has viscous coupling limited slip center differential and Torsen rear differential. Eddie Murphy made television commercials in Japan for the fifth-generation Celica, promoting the styling and the Super Live Sound System.

In this episode of 'Pimp My Ride' Shawna's Celica is looking a bit worse for wear, and in need of fixing, as much as 'pimping'.

The team do a pretty radical job on the Celica. Shawna now has multiple I-Pods and screens in her car, with 2TB od data storage (enough to listen to music for ten years continuously and never here the same song twice - or until the hard drive fails!).

The wild orange, black and white paint work looks a bit like a tiger. Front bumper aside, the body modifications are relatively tame - oh year, I forgot about the Lamborghini-style scissor doors.

Shawna seems pretty happy, though she had never used any of the technologies before - oh dear!

Long Live LEGO!

I've discovered that I have about a terabyte of photos. I'm certain that there are numerous duplicates in there but boy, is it a big job to organize.

Part of my holidays were spent trying to do just that and in the process I realized I have a lot of favourite images that I've never posted to Flickr (or submitted to Getty, hint, hint).

This is the start of a barrage of uploads with witty captions to follow.

BTW, I'm zooming closer to my 1,000th upload and to my 1,000,000th viewing.

As I reflected about the 365 project. I couldn’t help but be a little emotional about the entire experience. I apologize in advance for the rant and shift in tenses. I have never been very confident with my writing. This is why I wanted to take photographs. Imagine, one picture replacing 1000 words. Amazing! -- But I digress. This 365 project taught me a lot about photography, my family, my friends and myself.

About photography, I learned the importance of light and controlling it. I wish I could say that I learned this due to the overwhelming amount of great shots I captured. Unfortunately, I do not believe that is the case. It is the failures after post processing and posting that taught me the value of light and the mastery of using it. Be it ambient or strobe, you always need to be vigilant about its whereabouts, its quality and its intensity. I also learned that lighting a subject was not as difficult as photographing them.

Fortunately, my favorite subjects live in the same house as I. I never expected to take this much photos of my family, especially Kenny.

Before I say anything else about my family. I would like to thank my kids: Kenny and Greg. I hope I did not traumatize them having a camera stuck in front of their faces for almost a full year. What I didn’t expect was the enjoyment we would have--not in the elaborate photoshoots--but the times I came home late from work or karate. I never expected the kids to stay up late waiting to assist or be photographed.

I learned that Greg would rather assist or take his own pictures rather than be photographed. He had his moments. For the most part, his attention lasted a few minutes then he was ready to do something else.

Kenny was my main model. He never failed to give suggestions and share ideas. I hope he enjoyed being photographed by me as I did photographing him. The best part, in addition to getting a lot of photographs for blackmail when he gets older, I got a chance to bond, interact, share moments, and just enjoy the company of Kenny and Greg.

I would also like to thank my wife, Michelle. She managed to appear in the project a few times. This project would have been more difficult without her support and understanding. My commute to and from work usually takes 4 hours. Making things more complicated, I decided go back to karate and shot weddings and portrait sessions for friends and family. Through out all the added activities, roller coaster mood swings, frustrations and jubilations, Michelle has been my rock and my sanity. When she agreed to support me with this project, she was not kidding. I would have never finished this project without her. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

My friends have been supportive with their comments. I am honored and humbled when I receive kudos and compliments from them about my photographs. Even my work friends have been following this journey. For all your support, kindness and encouragement, I thank you. I also want to thank my new-found friends through photography, my Flickr contacts. Your comments have been something I looked forward to reading this entire project. Your pictures have been inspirations.

Speaking of inspirations, there is one friend that has served as such for decades. Ervic Aquino (Stormline), thank you. You have been part of my life and my families life for a long time. We have been best friends for years. In addition to being one of my best friends, you have always been a mentor. Ervic was the first person to introduce me to graphic design when I was in limbo regarding my career choice. He showed my my first professional Mac and what it could do. He took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew. I will not say I learned everything. Let’s put it this way, his brain can hold terabytes of information. Mine, feels like a 3.5 floppy disk. What impressed me, and still impresses me, about Ervic is his vast knowledge, but his unselfishness and graciousness in sharing all that information with me.

I can honestly say that Ervic has been a major part in what I do and who I am today. From my career, karate, and family life, he has been an inspiration. Someone I strive to be. I would consider myself successful if I accomplish 1/4 of what he can do.

Oh, before I forget, he also got me into this photography thing.

Before opening my eyes to strobism, a few decades ago, he bought me my first SLR, the Canon Elan IIe. He also gave me my first DSLR, the Canon 30D. My current camera, I bought from him, the Canon T1i. We have gone on a few shoots together, mostly with our kids and family. The highlight of our photographic journey was meeting David Hobby and Joe McNally. The two gods of small flashes and the style I grew to love. Ervic remains to give valuable feedback and insight. In fact, my 365 project would have not happened if it weren’t for him. He started his project first and I was impressed. The tasked seemed daunting but Ervic assured me that I can do it and he will support me. His support gave me all the confidence I needed to begin this project.

Thank you, Ervic, for everything. Some guys are lucky to have one best friend. I am blessed to have a couple. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about photography, karate and family. I am honored to have you and your family be an important part in my life.

Okay, my apologies for rambling on. I am almost done. I promise.

Lastly, I have learned a lot about myself. I realized I am not a happy person at 1am processing photographs knowing I have to wake up at 4:30am to get ready for work the next day. It’s even worse 4 days in a row. I have also learned that I am one of those folks who needs to fail sometimes in order to learn. This happened too many times that I care to admit. I learned that I am a glutton for punishment because of all the other activities I decided to take on while working on this project.

I have been blessed with loving wife who will support me at my weakest, understand me at my worst and love me unconditionally. I have kids who love to be photographed as much as I love photographing them. I have family and friends who love viewing my photographs and giving supportive and encouraging comments and finally, I have a best friend who has, and hopefully, continue on supporting me with photography, karate and life. I cannot say this enough: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. To each and everyone of you who viewed, commented, suggested, supported, criticized, and loved my photographs. Your comments, support and suggestions have made me a better photographer. Your involvement in my life has made me a better person.

Geez, I thought this project was about photography!

Markthal, Rotterdam

The Market Hall in Rotterdam is situated between Binnenrotte , Hoogstraat and Blaak . [3] It is a residential and commercial building with indoor market hall . The opening took place on October 1, 2014 by Queen Máxima . In addition to an indoor market, the complex houses 228 apartments , 4,600 m² of retail space , 1600 m² hospitality and parking for more than a thousand cars. [1]

Architecture [ edit ]

The Market Hall was designed by architects MVRDV . The gray stone building has an arch shape as a horseshoe . It has both faces a glass façade. The laminated glass panels, most of which are square and 1 485 millimeters wide, are hung in a cable net facade of 34 meters high and 42 meters wide, which thus is the largest in Europe. Each façade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal lines. [4

Artwork [ edit ]

In 2014 international media attention arose before. [8] [9] [10] Some publications called it the greatest work of art in the world "(a claim that is probably not true) [10] or "the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam '. Arno Coenen has realized work in collaboration with a team of six specialists. [10]

I understand if we are reoccurring Pro's we will be able to renew our Pro Accounts. But I WAS CURIOUS: I looked at the email in the above photo 500,000 + photos sounds like a lot but then I noticed in the fine print "6.5 megapixels are what most Smart Phone photos are" so I wondered how this compared to my camera photos. One of my camera photos is 6.79 MB.....OK how many MB are in a megapixel....wellllllll they are two different things....there are 1,000,000 megabytes in a terabyte. If I divide 1,000,000 by 6.79 I get 143,472.02 NOT 537,731..... Megapixels and megabytes are not directly related. Pixels are used to describe the resolution of an image, whereas bytes are used to describe a measure of data. mega- is a prefix used to describe how much of them there are (1 million).......I am not that great at math.....what am I missing???????

are the SAME GUY (check those sick sideburns)

The San Francisco location of the Internet Archive sits at 300 Funston St., at the site of a former Christian Science church. Rumor has it that they bought it, in part, because the front of the building matched the already-existing logo.

The Internet Archive has a noble mission: “to give everyone access to all knowledge, forever.” This includes the Live Music Archive (LMA), which is a collection of over 250,000 concert recordings of taper-friendly bands in lossless audio formats.

The servers are cooled with ambient air, and the rest of the building is heated with the captured heat emitted by them (it IS San Francisco after all). The Archive, in total, hosts 180 petabytes of data, worldwide, with 15 petabytes residing in this location.

1 petabyte = 1024 terabytes or 1024x1024 gigabytes (or approximately 5.289e+17 bytes).

In 2025, the IA’s mission has included saving Federal webpages from the purge of The Lyin’ King’s war on the Truth. This includes thousands of of pages from the CDC, National Parks and other institutions that contained any whiff of diversity, mentioning contributions by women, queer folk and people of color, mentions of slavery or our genocide against This Continent’s original inhabitants.

Long Live LEGO!

I was tagged by (someone in my contact list). But since he didn't even stop by at all after tagging me, I may just default to Sam since she came by to do so...

I took this pic a couple of weeks ago as part of a "before and after" series.

Before, that is... THE CUT!

Yup! I chopped off ALL of my hair to a buzz cut (with just a little length on top). And for the record, this was NOT my normal look before the haircut. Yes, I look dour here (as well as being unshaven), but I hoped it would enhance the difference when I post the new pic with a happy face plastered on me (haha). I usually wore my hair styled back over my ears a bit, and am always clean shaven. Plus, the intentional dark vignetting helps to make the mood dark here as well!

As part of the "16 Random Things" tag game, most are posting SPs, so I thought I would go ahead and post it anyway--against my better judgement, (and the recommendation of others who collectively said that I look: scary, scared, mad, like a caveman and my personal favorite from a college buddy who really knows me... "evil.") Trust me, I'm not (hehe).

On to the:

16 random things about me...

1) I love music!!! I am constantly either listening to my iPod, or playing my iTunes playlists. I have a dedicated computer "just" for music and movies that I've ripped into iTunes.

I play guitar. Mostly solo, acoustic, fingerstyle guitar in altered tunings and Hawaiian Slack Key style (hence my long nails on my right hand in the picture--I had actually just trimmed them for the pic, they're usually longer, but it is only the thumb, forefinger and middle finger nails.)

My favorite genres are: Acoustic guitar, Hawaiian Slack Key, Contemporary Hawaiian, Classic Rock, '90s alternative and early '90s grunge, some good ol' '70s disco, and early '70s soul and R&B. My favorite song...? Impossible to come up with one. But I will say my favorite part of a song is from 3:05 to 7:05 (end) of The Beatles' "Hey Jude." It's nothing but, "Naaaaa, na na, na na na naaaa, na na na naaaa, heeeeey Jude!" for four minutes... And it's still not long enough. Perfect music there! The most listened to track in my iTunes Playlist (counting the number of times listened to in iTunes (since 2001--I've had the same system file catalog since then), my iPod and iPhone is: "Hijacker" by Preston Reed. It is a reeeeeally cool, solo, acoustic, tap 'n' slap-style, percussively played song! I sometimes put it on repeat and will listen to it during long walks or bike rides!

2) I am very much into self-configuring my media center. In addition to the iTunes machine above, I also have a Mac Mini hooked up to a Samsung 42" HD flat screen via HDMI. I have it connected to an external terabyte drive with nearly 1000 movies ripped to it. I use the remote that comes with Macs, and the built-in Front Row engine to watch all of the movies! It sure beats thumbing through several, large wallets of DVDs, or having to watch DVDs right away on the night that you rent them.

3) I totally do not get the whole ring tones craze for phones! Especially why people will pay twice to three times as much (2 or 3 bucks) for them than what the regular version of the song costs online (99 cents). I mean, what is up with the fifty-somethin' year-old guy who's phone rings with "My Hump" by the Black Eyed Peas? (haha--Loved that episode of The Office). Personally, I'm really hip on using the "old phone" ring tone. You know the one that sounds like a phone used to sound in the '50s, '60s and '70s before electronic sounds took over?)

4) I get annoyed at the incorrect usage of the pronoun "I" as well as the incorrect usage of the apostrophe character when typing. It's to the point of me becoming curmudgeonly :-) For example, when someone posts an image of themselves and their dog Spot, it isn't "Spot and I," it's "Spot and me!" It's simple really... whatever sounds correct by itself (I or me) is also correct when coupled with another noun. Also when others use apostrophes when pluralizing abbreviations or numbers, that drives me nut too. It's '70s, '80s and '90s, not 70's, 80's and 90's... and, it's CDs, DVDs and MP3s, not CD's, DVD's and MP3's!

Sorry if you're one who does either of these... I should probably take a chill pill and get over it! (haha)

5) I eat all of my food portions off the plate one at a time. Growing up it drove my mom crazy! She used to call me out on it in front of people during dinners...

6) I have used Photoshop since the original beta version (pre-1.0) in 1990! It has come a looooooong way baby! In 1998, I taught a seminar called "Photoshop for Architects" in 25 cities around the country. I broke even on the fees made vs. the costs to put it on, but it was worth it to visit the 25 largest cities across the county in one summer! I would do it again, only to break even, in a heartbeat... Who's with me?

:-)

7) A lot of people call me a chameleon because I never look the same from one moment in time 'til the next time they see me. Really, nearly 50 people or so in my life have said something to this effect. My hair will either be long, medium or short, or I'll have a full beard, goatee, soul patch, or be clean shaven, I'll be slightly underweight, very fit, or a little heavy. Combine all of those traits into different combinations, and you have a master of disguise, hehe! Although I can probably count on just two hands the number of years in my life I have had short hair. It's fair to say I've had long hair for 75% of my life.

In addition to the traits above changing, even my height has changed after the normal time of growing. In my junior year of high school, I was 6'-1" (185 cm). I didn't grow again until my junior year of college when I grew to 6'-2" (188 cm). And finally, several years later in my 30s, I grew to 6'-3" (191 cm) where I currently reside. I'm 43 now, so I'm pretty sure I'll only shrink from here on out!

8) I took piloting lessons but had to suspend them due to recored rains in Hawaii in the Spring of '06. I completed ground school, but just need to go back up with a CFI and continue the lessons. My friend Paul has a Cirrus SR20 GTS. I go up with him fairly often flying between Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai and the Big Isle! It is a four-seater single-engine (prop) Lexus in the sky! It's a blast! It's as easy to fly as driving a car...

9) My fave photographers are Ansel Adams and George Tice. Together, they have shown America better than any photographers I can think of. And both of them show different aspects. Ansel focuses on the majesty of nature, (in particular the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite Valley), while Tice expertly captures the urban, suburban and rural living aspects of America and its people!

10) I am of Spanish descent but have never been to Spain, and I have forgotten whatever Spanish I once knew... However, I have been to Italy twice, and speak Italian (moderately). I'm a bit ashamed of this so I feel that I must rectify it and explore Spain soon!

11) I loooooove single-malt Scotch whisky. Not the blended kind like Dewar's, Chivas and Johnnie Walker; but real, single-malt, distilled whiskies like Lagavulin, Oban, Laphroaig, Glenmorangie, etc. Any of the classic six really! (thanks for the spell check G.)

12) I once fell asleep when younger on a hard tile floor using an upright Coke can as a pillow. My roommates marveled at this and even took a picture! And no, I don't remember being drunk, just very tired.

13) Sports: I am a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE college football fan and root incesantly for my alma mater (Oklahoma Sooners), who's QB just won the Heisman trophy, and our team is playing in the National Championship game on January 8. If we lose, I will be inconsolable! :-(

I was a huge Tennis fanatic when Andre Agassi played, but not so much now that he's retired; and now that Andy Roddick has failed to compete against the giants that are Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

14) Even though I live in Hawaii, I rarely go into the ocean. I go to the beach a lot for photos, but only wade ankle deep for the shots. No real reason except that I'm just not that into ocean/water sports/play or surfing. I do however love to hike and road bike all over the island, including some very, very steep and high bike routes (Tantalus). I am hoping to ride in the "Ride to the Sun" race in August 2009 which will race from Paia, Maui at sea level, to the summit of Haleakala, 40 somthing miles away and 10,000 feet (3048 M) up.

15) I worked in my small town movie theatre growing up. I was the projectionist, concessionist, and marquee changer. I was able to watch every movie that came out in the late-'70s/early-'80s multiple times! When I changed lettering on the marquee, I would climb a 16 foot (5m) high ladder and "walk" the ladder by leaning back and teetering the ladder on only one leg and swaying left to right to have it change from the left to right support and walk it forward. People used to drive out specifically to watch me do this when movies changed over night from Thursday to Friday. In five years, I only fell once, and that was because the aluminum ladder leg buckled. I was OK.

16) I am a klutz. I am ALWAYS stubbing my toe, and a couple of times to the point of bleeding or dislocation (I have boats for feet). I also have scrapes and bruises every now and then from just generally running/bumping into things... This is particularly frightening to me because I am not at all afraid of heights, and will get myself into precarious situations trying to get the shot. I just know my klutziness will "do me in" one of these days! ...and I've nearly poked my eyes out dozens of times from my guitar nails... (haha)

Well, I'm sure I could've picked a better list of 16 random things, but I decided to just let them come to me as I type. Beware now, as I may tag you if you haven't been tagged before... (mmmmwwahahahaha!)

Farewell to 2008 and have a happy and prosperous 2009 everyone!

Rex

P.S.

Visit back in a few days as I will add links to some of the items in the list if anyone is interested...

About the new image... I think it will take some time to get used :)

Thomas and I both made a trip over the mountains today to the little town of Cove Fort. I met him at the gas station where I stopped before leaving for home to see if there were any strangers. At first I took a few photos of my daughter, but then I worked up the nerve to look around for a person to photograph. I could see Thomas's bandana peeking out from behind a vehicle, so I headed in his direction where I found him selling jewelry.

At first Thomas wasn't comfortable with the idea of being photographed, but he changed his mind after asking me about the 100 stranger group. It turns out that Thomas has a Flickr account and was enrolled in a photography class some time back. Unfortunately, he ran into some problems when trying to renew his Flickr Pro account, so he hasn't been back since. Maybe the "New Flickr" some people love to hate will help to bring back all the missing photos with that free terabyte. :)

Once again I was a nervous idiot and did a bit of rambling, but Thomas's quiet and gentle personality didn't seem to mind. I did manage to shut up long enough to learn that he is from one of the most beautiful parts of Utah near Bryce Canyon National Park and many other amazing sights.

As I walked away, Thomas wished me luck, and that's the story of Stranger #77. :)

Find out more about the 100 strangers project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/

1 terabyte of free space, better make the most of it! :D

As you can tell, I won NaNoWrimo by meeting my word count goal of 5,000 words with a novel inspired by a LEGO minifig, believe it or not! Here's the novel that I wrote, if you're interested!

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 10.31.2110

I couldn’t decipher much of the system log, as I am not that good with computer language. From what I can piece together, it happened like this:

It was a cold, dark, dry Martian night in the Sector 12 station. Sergeant-at-Arms Kelby had just begun checking his third-quarter timesheets, when an old, disused pad (100198) started to hack into the system form the disused back entrance. Eventually, it managed to hack the security codes so that it carried Captain Piccadilly’s code! The operator of the pad used this to get into Level 9, our chaotic call center. Then, he/she opened fire on the cavernous room, filled to the gills with vidphone operators. We lost three operators at that instant. They were Susan Adams, “Acid” Wund, and Jon Baker. They were all at the top of their game, and much too young to die. The security cameras caught a glimpse of a completely black-clad figure dual-wielding banned Walther Disentegrators. I ran a face-match on this picture, and had no luck. The perp suddenly teleported out of there. A small orange and red object dropped, and then KA-WHAM!, no more feed or system logging. I instantly recognized the explosion type. It was a 1-2 megaton fission bomb, with about the yield of the one that destroyed Hiroshima. Thankfully, the system’s last gasp included activating the rad shields and sealing off every section. The system and all the other electronic devices went kaput, because the Keptin designers forgot to add shielding to their design. We had no deaths from the blast, but about 50 got concussion wounds, and all of the evidence was destroyed. I might mention that the café’s food suddenly tasted like a mouthful of brick dust. I can only hope the radiation didn’t affect Sector Twelve’s food stores. The case is nowhere near closed, though.

Chapter 2

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 988) Stardate 11.2.2110

Today started out well enough. I had just figured out a new lead on Case 987. By looking at what was visible of the perp’s face through the mask, I was able to figure out that the perp was the same species as the infamous mugger Slizer. It is definitely not Slizer, though, because he is safe and sound in Planet Lisa’s max-security prison. Then, the worst happened. Reports started filtering in that the Skaalgan, a warrior race, had rebelled against the good rule of the Galactic Republic. First, le me give you a bit of background on the Skaalgan.

The Skaalgan are categorized as a Type 12 species. Normal Earth composition air is quite toxic to them, so they have to wear chlorine-filled pressure suits off their home planet, Schvinge. They are also a traditionally violent race, so these methane suits, if punctured, also serve as a deadly gas bomb to Type 3 (oxy-breathing mammals like the Humans) species. At last count, they have orchestrated a baker’s dozen rebellions against the Republic. (source: Hyperwikipedia)

They appeared to have no reason other than “it was Bob’s birthday, and that means we go rebel against somebody”. Their main forces for the initial assault consisted of the Mustard Juggernauts, the deadliest combination of armor, gas suits, and weapons the galaxy has ever seen. The Mustard Juggernauts are armed with the deadly GE Minigun and the Heckler&Koch MP5. While outdated, the Minigun puts out an astonishing 3,000 rounds per minute, and the MP5 is astonishingly accurate. Our forces were only ray-shielded, so these “outdated” mass throwers came as quite a surprise. Their main spearheads were on three planets: Planet Lisa, a then-deserted asteroid, and Space Station EM-3. It was a complete massacre. The Space Police peacekeepers, using the completely wrong type of shielding, dropped like flies. We had to call in the Space Marines.

I didn’t hear much from HNN on the issue. It soon went deep black. I had to go through the official channels to get any information on the rebellion. From what I heard, it has already been resolved. It’s not my department, anyways…..

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.5.2110

I think I have a lead! The only place where Walther Disentegrators can be found is Jack Jeebs Pawn in Queens, New York. I have a void in my schedule tomorrow, so I think I’ll go to Queens to check this out. There’s also a few friends of mine up there that may have some information pertaining to the case. By the way, Sally has been acting up lately. I think she somehow got a copy of Windows Vista to run as a background emulator to relieve boredom, and it is bugging up the system like heck.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.6.2110

I am on the evening rocket back to HQ as I write this. The visit to Jeebs’ place was quite eventful. It’s fresh in my mind, so I’ll give you a play-by-play.

I walked into the pawn shop at high noon, with a spring in my step thanks to some spring-augmented stilts from a street vendor. I soon accidentally bumped my head on the chandelier. I asked Jeebs about the Walther disintegrators nicely, and then he unexpectedly tells me about these kids walking in and stealing every single bit of high-tech weaponry he has, including the Walther Disentegrators! Luckily, those kids frequented the shop, so Jeebs new exactly who they were. They were Derek Rodriguez and Alfred Lord, both 17. They lived in the Jamaica Estates apartments, room 131 and 342 respectively. I will have to file for a warrant to both interview and interrogate these kids about the robbery and where the disintegrators went.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.7.2110

Paperwork sucks eggplants. I had to go through a Trip Value Assessment, an after-action report, an incident report, a polygraph test, an appeal for a warrant, an overhead expense justification sheet for the spring-augmented stilts, and a part replacement chitty for Sally’s graphics chip (it had become infested with gremlins) just for those past two days! Arrghh!

Anyway, I pulled up the files on those kids. Nothing came up except for this odd code fragment from Sally.

>fuzzy wuzzies

That’s all. I think I need to replace the monitor again.

Chapter 3

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.8.2110

I finally got the warrant for search of the Jamaica Estates apartments, rooms 131 and 342. I am right in front of the building right now, so I’ll go ahead and log it. The log may prove crucial.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.8.2110 Supplemental

2:00 I am at the lobby.

2:01 I ask the receptionist which way I should head to get to room 131.

2:02 Receptionist: “Here’s a map, you should know how to use it.”

2:03 Note to self: Do not ask directions from the receptionist. Ever.

2:04 I am knocking at the door of room 131.

2:09 Nobody has answered.

2:10 I am using the ancient elevator in lieu of a turbolift to get to room 342.

2:15 I am knocking at the door of room 342.

2:16 I apparently am knocking at the front door of the Odd Species Embassy in New York, New York.

2:17 Something has gone seriously wrong. I appear to have entered a spatial disturbance.

2:18 Starfleet Lieutenant Commander Data answers the door. I ask him about the disturbance.

Data: “I have no idea as to what just happened. However, I am on vacation and am able to assist.

2:19 Data pulls out his tricorder and scans me.

Data: “You appear to have come from the year 2110. Welcome to the twenty-fourth century.”

2:20 Make that temporal disturbance. I hate it when Carl Sagan forgets to carry a number.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.8.2410

I have entered a temporal disturbance while knocking at the door of room 342 at the Jamaica Estates apartments in Queens, New York. I have acquired a helper in the form of Starfleet Lieutenant Data. He is an android with a positronic brain. I have no leads on either Incident 987 or how I am supposed to get out of here. Yikes. Of course, the fuzzy wuzzies may have something to do with that.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.12.2410

I just searched “fuzzie wuzzies” about a minute ago and it came up with some interesting results. Fuzzie wuzzies appears to be an asteroid in the next sector over with an odd temporal anomaly on its surface. I’m in the middle of coordinating an attempt to figure out which time and system it goes to.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.16.2110

I am not allowed to divulge the methods by which I got back because of the Prime Directive, but here I am. Everything’s good now, but the Jamaica Estates apartments are going to have to have a thorough scientific scan for anomalies. I hope I can interrogate the two kids while they’re waiting for their rooms to finish the scan. Meanwhile, back to Sally’s defective monitor…

Transcript of interview of Derek Rodriguez and Alfred Lord by SPSI Saxon Fletcher

Stardate 11.16.2110 2:00 PM

Saxon Fletcher: Do you happen to know anything about the temporal anomaly in Alfred Lord’s room?

Alfred Lord: Woops, sorry about that. It’s a leftover from when my whole family lived in the apartment and I wanted to keep my little sister out of my room. I really must recalibrate that thing.

Saxon Fletcher: What do you know about the thief of Jack Jeebs’s whole weapons stock?

Derek Rodriguez: His weapons stock has never been stolen, ever. I should know. He lies to any overly curious people so they don’t go spreading rumors that Jeebs has some illegal weapons. He only sells those illegal weapons to people threatening him with a much bigger gun or a permit, though.

Alfred Lord: His whole stock is intact. I bought a target blaster off him just yesterday.

Saxon Fletcher: Do you happen to know anything about a pair of Walther Disentegrators that disappeared from Jeebs’s store about two weeks ago?

Derek Rodriguez: He sold them to a light-green colored alien that looked a lot like that Slizer dude you see on the “Most Wanted” posters.

Saxon Fletcher: That’s all. Good day.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.17.2110

I had to go through more paperwork than ever today! I think the paper I used was about the yield from an entire tree. I had to go to a debriefing run by the Physicists that Formerly said Theoretical, make an absence excuse sheet, negotiate with Sally’s defective gremlin-catching lawyer, file an After-Action Report from the interview of Rodriguez and Lord, explain the Prime Directive to about fifty of my coworkers, go through a full bio scan, and last but not least, a cost-risk assessment for some utterly unrelated thing that accidentally got wired to me. I plan to quantify Rodriguez’s statement about Jeebs’s sales with my old pals at MiB, test out those stilts, and try to catch up on my doctorate of investigation.

CHAPTER 3

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.18.2110

I’m at the Queens MiB bureau as I write this. It appears that both the MiB have developed a lifespan-enhancing drug called “boosterspice” with no ill effects. This has Potential with a capital P. Sadly, I am not allowed to divulge any details about this breakthrough, or I would have to brain-wipe you. Anyways, I checked with K about Jeeb’s activities. Turns out the kids were right. Jeebs uses everything he can to keep the long arm of the law out of his shop. The MiB (or Mibbies as we call them in the amateur xenobiologist community) assigned me Agent J to help me out on the case, as they lost one of their own (“Acid” Wund, who was visiting). I’ve also been assigned an extremely potent version of the famed Noisy Cricket with a longer antenna to use if things get interesting. Here’s a play-by play log of our “visit” to Jeebs’s shop.

11:00 AM Agent J and I are exiting the Mibbie’s Queens Bureau through the west exit.

11:02 AM I see the street vendor that sold me those spring-loaded stilts. I thank him.

11:05 AM Agent J and I stop to talk to a pug. He quantifies the kid’s statement yet again.

11:15 AM J and I are waiting at the bus stop.

11:45 AM J and I are still waiting.

12:00 PM We get on the bus to MacDougal Street.

1:00 PM We get off the bus.

1:15 We are at the “Question of Time” jewelry shop, aka Jeebs’s shop.

1:16 Agent J: “Jeebs, let’s see the goods.”

1:17 Jeebs: “I don’t know nothing about any goods! I’m just a humble jewelry shop owner!”

1:18 Agent J: “Skip it. We know you have extraterrestrial weapons here.”

1:19 Jeebs pulls out a fearsome-looking shotgun and presses it to J’s head. It’s time for the Son of the Noisy Cricket.

1:20 I shoot the Noisy Cricket II at Jeeb’s head and simultaneously cause Jeeb’s head to disappear, the shotgun drops on the button that changes Jeebs’s shelves, and the recoil throws me back about 10 feet. “Noisy Cricket” my butt.

1:21 Jeebs: “You idiot! Do you know how much that stings?”

1:22 I ask Jeebs about the two Walther Disentegrators he sold a couple weeks ago.

1:23 Jeebs: “That guy said he was mafia. I can’t tell you anything”.

1:24 Agent J: “The mafia doesn’t have aliens.”

1:25 Jeebs: “Alright, fine. I don’t know his name, but I do know where he lives and what he is. He is a rouge Igor from Discworld, transported here by a temporal anomaly. He currently lives in the Jupiter sky colonies.

1:26 Me: “That pretty much seals it. All Igors call themselves Igor, so we know his name, location, and timeframe.”

1:27 Agent J and I are heading back to MiB HQ.

5:00 We are back at MiB HQ. I hate rush hour.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.19.2110

I am starting preparations for the trip to Jupiter to track down the Jovian Igor. I’ve collected a warrant, a small rocket-powered atmosphere skipper, and the pressure suits necessary so far. I’m in the process of figuring out a vehicle-mounted weapons system that won’t accidentally shoot through the gas envelopes of the colonies. My solution so far uses a combination of a railgun shooting small, thin-walled ampoules of hydrogen at an incredibly high speed. Theoretically, this design will have a darn-near unlimited ammo supply, given that the Jovian atmosphere is primarily made up of hydrogen. I just have to keep the whole atmosphere from going up in flames! Agent J has come through with some of the gadgets we are going to need, and my alma mater Clark County University has provided us with a prototype warp drive capable of going Warp 4. Now all we need is a vehicle to cram all this stuff in.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.20.2110

We’ve got a ship. It’s a robust cargo hauler called the Star Porter. I’ve got a configuration for everything. The railgun design has been fabbed and is in shipping, and I am trying to cram the CCU warp drive into Engineering. I’ve collected a crack crew. Now to get the muscle to operate the lifts right… Agent J is wrestling with installing the scanners and matter-energy reactor. I have also come up with another lead about the Jovian Igor. He lives in Sky Colony 4, near the equator.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.21.2110

Ha, all the keys I had to press were the two, the one, and the zero. Anyways, we’ve got everything ready and will be underway once the FAA gives us a clearance, which could be tomorrow or the next millennium, knowing how the FAA hates everyone. I’m trying to find more info on Sky Colony 4. Apparently, the fourth colony disappeared into the Big Red Spot about five years ago, yet its transponders are giving the “all clear” signal, and their locators are disabled. Rumors have been circulating that Four broke away from the Republic. This adds another SP team to my crew compliment, but they’re good people. Heading up SPSI Team TWO will be Special Operator Medvedev. He will have Agent K, Bob and a young upstart named Kirk under him.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.22.2110

We’ve got an FAA clearance at last. We launch tomorrow. All preparations are done.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.23.2110

We have launched. We are going to do a mid-trip refuel with a Ramses-class supertanker, net info dump near Asteroid AP Alpha, and finally detach the atmospheric hopper section, which contains the bridge, living quarters for the SP investigation units, and a gas envelope inflator. I also am riding the hopper down. When we hit the atmosphere, we will gather inflatable gasses for about a minute (sixty kilometers downwards), inflating the gas envelope as we go down. Once the gas envelope inflates, we will gain the designation Sky Rover One. We will make our way over to Five’s last known location, then deploy rocket hoppers in a spiral search pattern.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.24.2110

We have made it to the refuel point with the Ramses-class supertanker Star Provider.

No sight of her, yet, which is very weird. Meanwhile, the crew has been amusing themselves with the holodeck. They have been having as much fun with the constant power and picture tube repairs as with using it. Changing the picture tubes requires hooking into a safety line climbing rig and climbing a hundred-foot ladder of titanium-sheathed Net conduits to the projector. There, they have to input a thirty-two digit hexadecimal security code to gain access to the projector assembly. Once they replace it, they face a hundred-fifty foot rappel down to safety. It’s not for the queasy. The projector blows quite a lot, so they get a lot of chances. One of our engineers is testing a wing system to eliminate the rappel. He has went through five “Frequent Patient” cards at sickbay.

The power units are a whole different story. When they go down, all heck breaks lose. The subject has to suit up in full “battle rattle”, containing a deactivator pistol, a high-strength locator beacon, a holoresolver HUD, and a Scout power armor suit. Once down to the engineering levels, he has to literally do battle with the failing holoprojector computer. The computer generates random images, most used in battle training and therefore quite frightening. The subject uses his holoresolver HUD to check and see if the hologram can do any damage (the holodeck computer has been known to interface with the replicator at times) and takes the required action. If the hologram is innocuous, he adjusts his HUD to block it out and move on. If the hologram’s matter-energy settings are off and it looks to be malicious, the subject tries to access the shipwide network and shut that down. If not, he shoots it with the deactivator, which tells the computer to shut that image down. The computer has, on occasion, taken cues from early pre-warp two-dimensional “videogames” and have a life system, which causes the image to take multiple shots to shut down. To counter this, the arts department is working with the geeks to create higher-power weapons such as deactivator cannons. I think that, with the proper modifications, these weapons will be quite useful on Sky Colony Four. Once the subject has gotten to the central holodeck computer, he has to interface directly with it via his Net implant to reprogram it to accept the new power circuitry. This is incredibly tedious at the best of times, and utterly nauseating and terrifying when the computer is really on the fritz or in one of its moods. After he has reprogrammed it, he has to come back through the “stacks”, which contain, at total, fifteen thousand terabytes of data. He must not bump a single memory stack for fear of taking down life support or his locator beacon receiver software. The Adar designers, in their endless wisdom, made this a fun little labyrinth. Thankfully, we haven’t lost a man yet, but it took five hours until we heard from SP Investigation Team ONE Matrix Specialist Max “Job Title” Porkins.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.25.2110

We have finally sighted the Star Provider and refueled. The Bussard-Cherenkov balance refueling process is quite a spectacle, so I’ll relate the process to you.

First, the subject has to bleed off all its fuel. This is usually accomplished by having the refueling point when the subject is almost completely out of fuel, but the modified Star Porter is a bit different. Our modifications meant that the quad-blaster cannon gas reserves are in the previous main fuel tank, and the fuel is contained in MASSIVE external conformal fuel tanks (ECFTs). The ECFT designer forgot to add external dump valves. Additionally, our refuel point had to be when we were midway there, because that was the last refuel point until Jupiter. We could have lasted until we were three-quarters there, but then we would be dead in space with no refueling opportunity.

Our pilot accomplishes this by taking the Star Porter through VERY aggressive combat maneuvers. He first detaches the atmospheric hopper section so the crew doesn’t get nauseated, and then goes through about twenty barrel rolls. It worked, thankfully, and I didn’t have to ride shotgun on THAT stagecoach. Next, the atmospheric hopper pilot reattaches with the main section (taking up precious fuel, but the main section pilot made it within a kilometer). Next, the tanker takes down an umbilical and refuels each ECFT individually, a painstaking process. Finally, the tanker detaches. Anyways, we refueled well and are now going towards the Net dump.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.26.2110

We have made it to the Net dump but are having some problems. The conduits are overflowing and maxing out the processors. It’s definitely going to be interesting. The engineers have hacked up a solution, involving some duct tape and a welder. We’ll see how long that holds up. I’ve actually managed to dredge u some information regarding these rebel Igors. They actually have a secret society and are plotting to take over Jupiter. They have, so far, only been able to put one Igor in, our perp.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.27.2110

We are now separating the atmospheric section from the section with the warp drive.

T+1 The section has been successfully separated.

T+2 The section is in free fall.

T+3 The envelope has been inflated.

T+4 Redesignation: Sky Rover One.

T+5: Heading to the bearing of the last transmit from Five.

T+6: Preparing to offload rocket hoppers.

T+20: Last known position of Five reached. Initiating full sensor scan.

T+25: Faint signal heard spinwards. Deploying rocket hoppers one and two to investigate.

T+30: Rocket hoppers have reported that they have found Five. I’m heading in.

T+35: I have launched in Boarding One. I am really regretting not taking those drop sickness pills.

T+40: Boarding One has inflated its envelope and we are coming alongside Five.

T+41: Sending query.

T+42: Five has fired its railgun.

T+42: We are undertaking evasive maneuvers.

T+43: We are firing at Five’s weapons stations.

T+44: We have disabled Five’s weapons.

T+45: Coming alongside Five.

T+46: SPI teams ONE and TWO have boarded.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.28.2110

We have tracked down the Jovian Igor and he is in jail, but it’s no fun if you, dear reader, do not know how it happened, so here goes!

It was an all-too-stormy day on Jupiter. The time: high noon. We had boarded the rebel Sky Colony Five via the good ship Boarding One and swept the colony like the old Navy SEALs. Suddenly, our old friend the Jovian Igor fired at my first officer Sgt. Novak. Sadly, the perpetrator was a dead shot. I set my trusty Noisy Cricket to “stun” and went after the direction of the shot, with Men In Black Agent J trailing close behind. Little did we know, the Igor had professional training. Like any good blaster sniper, he never shot from the same spot twice. With holographic decoys that we had set out earlier dropping like flies, it looked like a miniature D-Day, except for two details: We were on a blimp and using blasters. Agent J suggested using jetpacks, which we did. Thankfully, they were the new repulsor units. Taking energy from the batteries of the dearly deceased hologram units, we took to the air like so many birds. Trouble is, our flight skills weren’t all that good (both of us having barely passed Basic Jetpack Skills in primary), so we barely made it over the courthouse roof . These comedic antics acted as excellent evasive maneuvers, so we were never hit once. I pulled out my binoculars and had a look around. Surprisingly enough, the Igor was smack-dab in my sights. I took my Noisy Cricket off safety and fired. The recoil knocked me back about 10 feet, thus throwing off my gyros. I barely had enough time to compensate before I hit the ground. My jetpack busted, I had to chase the perp on foot. He ran up a fire escape, firing wildly (and missing) all the time. When he got up, he had to change blaster gas cells. I took the opportunity and fired. The infamous Jovian Igor was down. I took out a Styrette from my supplies and injected the Igor with an anesthetic, which would keep him out for at least 5 hours. Then the worst happened. Blaster fire started pouring in from all directions. It turned out that our little friend was not alone. I left the perp to the paddy wagon and dove for cover. Fortunately, his henchmen were not as well trained, firing from the same spot all the time. Agent J was able to take most of them out, but had to leave the ones better fortified to the Noisy Cricket, which was in possession of me. I found the first one near the radio shack. He was pretty well dug in there, with Dura Crete walls and a heavy ML42. One shot with that weapon, and I would have been dead. I saw him before he saw me, though, and took him out. One shot, and KABOOM! No more bunker! I moved on to the next one, who was snug as a bug I the armory. “This is going to be hard,” I thought to myself. Completely the opposite, this guy was the dumbest of them all. He barely fired and stood way out in the open, where I shot him with the Noisy Cricket. He was, without a question, disintegrated. I took a weapon with less recoil from the armory, as well as a new repulsor pack. Again, I took to the air, but with a little more confidence this time. I spotted the third and plinked a grenade into his hideout near the commissary. It failed to go off. I plinked another, ditto. The grenades must have been affected by the harsh Jupiter atmosphere. I landed and fired my Noisy Cricket at him, and he then went down. That was the last of them. I then went back to our base and we packed up and headed for home with the Jovian Igor safe behind bars.

Investigator Saxon Fletcher’s Case Log (Incident 987) Stardate 11.29.2110

We are en route back home. We have successfully reconnected with our warp drive section, made our Net dump, refueled from the atmosphere, and solved the dual mysteries of the Jovian Igor and the missing Sky Colony Five. It turns out that the Igor society hopped onto Five disguised as normal passengers and then executed a military coup. The colony turned off its transponder and went completely self sufficient from the Republic. I can’t wait to be done with all this running around!

Hello everyone! I'm happy to report that I am making plans to recover and hopefully, exceed in file count and quality, the files that were stolen from me. I am so very grateful to have such wonderfully supportive friends and rabid nature and wildlife fans! I wish to thank each of you who have kindly taken time out of their day to leave me a message (or messages) showing such earnest support. Your words rang in my head every time I walked past my camera gear that has been collecting dust.

I started just pricing around to see what it would take to travel back to every place I've been in the last 5 years. As you can imagine, the total was quite high. Amazingly, many of the folks I met in my travels still operate at those countries/locations. Some have generously offered to discount their rates to help me out. Others are willing to guide me for nothing. I tell you, I was so moved by this kindness and combined with all your words of encouragement, I simply could not walk away from this hobby I love so much. So now its a mad scramble to scrape up my pennies so I can start booking flights! Funny how much more airline tickets are now. That's ok, I hear you can live a fairly full life on a single kidney LOL

I have since picked up a new laptop (its pretty bad-a$$ by the way) and am trying subscriptions to a couple of auto-backup services for my future files. I still have some of my main gear - Canon 1DX, 600mm f/4, 16-35mm f/2.8 and a medium capacity tripod. I guess that's really all I need! Man I hate to think of all the other gear I lost, it still stings to think about it, but I digress. I am looking forward to hitting the road and doing my best to replace what I lost. I have been told I'm crazy for planning it this way, but I hope to re-visit every place I've shot at in the last 5 years, all within ONE year!! I lost over 20 Terabytes of data or about 800,000 files, spanning 13 countries and 30 states. So like a crazy man, I hope to have a million files this time next year and if I fail in this quest, hey I know it be fun trying.

So far, the places already carved in my stone calendar include:

1. Budapest, Hungary - Hortobagy Preserve promises 25 or more species all at one of my most favorite countries on Earth. I literally live on Goulash the entire time I'm there. LOL

2. Seattle, Washington - Eagles, Short Eared Owls, and who knows what else, all with the company of great friends.

3. Sarasota, Florida - best place in North America to eat authentic Cuban food while photographing all manner of critters!

4. High Desert Landscapes - a whirlwind spin around the southwest area of the US. I just gotta get my landscape fix in!

5. Long Island, New York - one of the best places I've shot for shorebirds on the cheap!

6. Coastal Texas - so much action here, you better consult your doctor first to make sure you're healthy enough to have this much fun haha!

I was debating on whether I should post pictures as I get them, or not post anything until this yearlong quest of over. What do you all think? Honestly I don't know if I can sit on 20 terabytes of files and not share a single one for that long haha!! LOL So thanks again for your support and encouragement.

I leave you with a photo of the cause of all my troubles of late. This highly modified FJ Cruiser literally will cost me $100,000 by the time I've completed this journey

This is "Raptor", the new high performance computing cluster that we just finished building at the HPC2 at Mississippi State University. It has 2048 AMD Opteron 2218 compute cores and has a total of 4 terabytes of memory. It has a peak performance of over 10 trillion calculations per second (10 TFLOPS).

Welcome to everyone who got here through Marc Hamilton's Weblog.

Update: 11/15/2006: The 28th Top500 Supercomputer Sites list was released yesterday, and this system was listed as the 115th fastest computer in the world. It is also the largest 100% Sun-based system in the United States at this time. Sun has released a rather nice press release about our system as well.

This was taken with the camera mounted on a Trek-Tech Trekpod held over my head and using the timer to release the shutter.

In 2014 international media attention arose before. [8] [9] [10] Some publications called it the greatest work of art in the world "(a claim that is probably not true) [10] or "the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam '. Arno Coenen has realized work in collaboration with a team of six specialists. [10]

Here's something most people don't know about me: as much as I love technology, and follow the latest news from Google, Apple, et al, I actually don't buy gadgets very often. I can't stand spending money needlessly, accumulating crap that I don't know how to get rid of, and, especially, retiring a tool before I've gotten all the value out of it. I just bought my first smartphone this year. And last week, I finally retired my faithful Dell Inspiron B130, which has been my exclusive machine since September 2006.

Now, some of you may scoff. A budget laptop marketed for college students is not the kind of choice you expect from someone who is fairly tech savvy and who uses a computer pretty much 24/7, for work and for play. But after nearly half a decade of constant use, I have nothing but praise for the Little Notebook That Could. Somewhere around here, I've told the tale of how, after I accidentally deleted the boot sector during a botched Linux venture, she miraculously healed herself without the use of a Windows disc or recovery software. I never once had to reinstall the OS, never had to contact Dell support, never had a serious virus or hardware malfunction, never experienced the sluggishness, overheating and physical cruft that my friends have had with their notebooks. Guys, if you take care of your computer, your computer will take care of you.

Nonetheless, the Dell was showing her age. While the very-worn battery and hard drive could probably be replaced, a 1.7 GHz single-core processor just doesn't cut it anymore, especially if you're looking to upgrade to Windows 7. So I've switched to an HP G62x, and after a little over a week of full-time use, I have no regrets. While less mobile than a netbook, and less powerful than, say, a MacBook Pro, these mid-range workhorses can really serve you well as a primary machine, and you can get some surprising deals if you do your homework. I got this thing with half a terabyte of internal storage (no more juggling external drives to watch my movies!) and an ATI Radeon Mobility video card, which, while it wouldn't satisfy a hardcore gamer, has been a real treat for me - not least because it unlocks some Photoshop features that I could never use before. This for under $600. And since I can install up to 8GB of RAM and (someday) an SSD, I'm thinking I can make this one last even longer than its predecessor.

Anyway. This desktop post won't have anything new for the customizers. I'm just marking my switch to a brand new platform. All of my desktops up to this point - throughout all the Lightning Sunset, the browser tinkering, the Rainmeter revival - were done on that little Dell. I'm looking forward to seeing where this new vessel will take me.

- - - - - - -

Before I get into my customization details, I have to say, straight off, that Windows 7 is a fantastic operating system. I know I'm a little late to the party here, but it needs to be said. The taskbar is a sheer joy to use. Jump lists are brilliant, especially pinning files, which eliminates the need for a lot of my old hotkeys. The redesigned Windows Explorer is an incredibly sleek, refined application. Networking just works now. And there are so many little touches: if you click and drag down on the title bar of a maximized window, it will restore the window and move it with your cursor, all without lifting the button.

Really, I'd write a whole review of Windows 7 alone, if there weren't already hundreds of them. Suffice to say, I'm no longer embarrassed to be a Windows user. Not that I really was before, but you know how it is - Linux people telling you you're an ignorant slave, Mac people telling you you have no taste. Especially looking at the directions that both OS X and Ubuntu are going these days, I can say with full confidence that Windows 7 is the OS I would choose from a cold start.

Theme:

- Visual Style: Shadow for 7 by krissirk. I tried the big names, including Appows and Shine. But this one just hit the mark. So many VS designers like to add their little frills around the edges, but Shadow is just clean, consistent and simple. The subtle Aero transparency is very professional - it makes Google Chrome look gorgeous, among other things. Just a real quality VS. I doubt it'd be much different if I'd made it myself.

- Wallpaper: Big Sky by Fifty Foot Shadows, one of my favorite wallpaper sources. I'm an incurable romantic, so the fact that this is an actual photograph, when a simple Photoshop gradient would have been just as easy, makes it somehow special to me.

Startups:

- Autohotkey, though Windows 7's built-in features have rendered many of my scripts obsolete. But I'm still using keys for window transparency, text replacement, and the How-To Geek's Alt+Drag script. I've also remapped those app keys along the side of the keyboard to make them more useful - for example, one of them summons Launchy with one press, and another shows/hides my Trillian contact list.

- Launchy. The new Start Menu search, which is really wonderful, has allowed me to streamline Launchy's index a bit. (Which is good, because the current Launchy beta is a real memory leaker, unfortunately. Hoping for a fix soon.)

- 7 Taskbar Tweaker. This thing has a bunch of features, but I use exactly one of them: middle-click to close windows on the taskbar. I used Taskbar Shuffle back in XP to do the same thing, and I still strongly believe that this should be a native function for all taskbar-oriented OSes, especially since it's become a standard in every web browser.

- StartKiller. Removes the start button. I already have one on my keyboard, thankyouverymuch.

- Dropbox. No explanation needed, I think.

- Lightscreen. Very, very handy for taking screenshots - stays out of the way and gets the job done.

- http://www.stereopsis.com/flux. Which Flickr doesn't want to turn into a link, for some reason. Hmph.

I still haven't figured out what kind of Rainmeter theme I'm going to use on the new OS, and sadly I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to muck around with it. Too busy with work, another side project that moved up about a year ahead of schedule, and some other poorly-timed events... 2011 has been a challenging year thus far. But we'll see where I end up on the currents.

Having the chance to catch Jupiter's moon Io as it approach and then began to transit planet the last Sunday evening, I thought I'd try to capture several sequences showing the event in various wavelengths; the results from that effort are shown here.

Object Details: The attached is a composite consisting of images taken in succession while varying the filter used from Infrared ('pinkish'), through Methane ('purplish'), to Luminance ('natural color'). The first three images highlight Io as it approaches from the left, the middle set as the moon itself is framed against the planet's cloud tops, while the final set shows both Io and it's shadow as they both transit.

As can be seen, the appearance of the moon & it's shadow varies greatly depending on the filter utilized. In the latter set, the Methane (blocking) filter highlights the moon as the bright spot right of center and it's shadow as the black spot further left of center, while the IR shows the moon as not quite as bright, but the shadow much darker. The brightness of the moon & the darkness of it's shadow in the Luminance wavelengths being somewhat in-between their appearance via the IR & Methane.

Image Details: This composite was compiled from a selection and subsequent stacking of frames from a total of nearly half a terabyte of data collected on Jupiter over a 2 hour and 12 minute period that evening.

Shot by Jay Edwards on the of August 30, 2020 (UT date Aug. 21, 2020) at the HomCav Observatory, like some of the previous planetary composites linked below, these were also taken using a (vintage 1970) 8-inch, f/7 Criterion newtonian reflector with a 3X Televue barlow and an ASI290MC 'planetary camera / autoguider'. As usual, the scope was mounted on and tracked with a Losmandy G-11 running a Gemini 2 control system and the camera was controlled by SharpCap.

Since humans tend to see detail in images via the brightness & contrast, as opposed to the color, I have included a greyscale version beneath the 'one-shot-color' images.

As presented here, the individual shots have been processed using a combination of AS3, Reistax & PSP and have been resized down to approximately half their original resolution.

LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU WHEN YOU'RE BUSY MAKING OTHER PLANS...

It's funny how much can change in a few years. I've been going through my archives to try and put some organization and structure around terabytes of images I have collected since mid-2010. Part of that effort is to put some words next to these images, to tell the pieces of the story that aren't recorded in pixels.

We moved to California in July of that year and spent a week before we started working exploring points north. In memory and in reality this was a charmed time: filled with the promise of a new start in California, unburdened by the responsibilities of work or the pressures of a changing professional landscape that eventually pushed us toward a career change. Driving north along the Avenue of the Giants where it winds without shoulder between coastal sequoias, to quote Dylan Thomas, we rode the daft and happy hills bareback.

Two weeks after the moving truck had departed, we slid over the Golden Gate northbound through Marin and then Sonoma and then Mendocino counties until we arrived at Prairie Creek Redwood State Park. Along the way we navigated the lost coast stopping and staring in awe at the giant redwood trees.

What can one add by writing a few words about the California redwoods that Muir or others haven't added already? What can I tell you that you can't already guess about the effect these giants have on the inner child that grew up on the great, flat expanses of the Midwest?

Note photographer for scale.

Note photographer for scale.

The Chandelier Tree.

The Chandelier Tree.

They were then and remain to me now the promise of the future and the lure of western lands made fibrous, ruddy flesh. Fragrant, seemingly-immortal and utterly silent they remain, basking even now in the California sun.

I've written previously about how I think there are at least two predominant modes of photographic consumption: the first being the instantaneous "this is what I'm doing" and the second being the "this is who we were." During the last few years advances in technology have driven the first of these to new heights. It is easier and faster and cheaper than ever to take and edit and share innumerable photographs. Despite these changes, however, it is my belief that the limitations on producing powerful imagery remain at the intersection of a photographer's capabilities and the import of what he or she documents. These photographs wouldn't be as precious to me if they weren't as crisp or if they didn't encapsulate so nicely our excitement at beginning a new chapter in our lives.

If I didn't take and instantly share some photographs with my iPhone of this first of our northbound adventures then I surely did in subsequent trips. But whatever became of those photographs is anyone's guess. The ones that survived are the ones you see here, made carefully and methodically for posterity and reminding me through the intervening years of stress and joy and change of who we once were and who we still are today.

"THEY WERE THEN AND REMAIN TO ME NOW THE PROMISE OF THE FUTURE AND THE LURE OF WESTERN LANDS MADE FIBROUS, RUDDY FLESH."

I REMEMBER BEING TIRED...

The ride was a long one and we had made plans to set up camp that night at a spot inside the park. I'll admit now to being reticent to tackling a more cumbersome route when my wife first suggested the detour through the Avenue of the Giants. Whatever hesitation or frustration might have existed melted at the sight of these trees and the unceremonious way the more spectacular groves were marked with a simple plaque and a dusty patch of earth where you were expected to park, get out and walk among giants. I had learned by this point that my navigator was an adept at finding new and interesting spots via a small detour.

We found a felled tree and I climbed aboard, able to stand fully extended in the cavity formed by a fire scar or some other calamity scaled to the enormity of these pines. We stopped a bit later where a particularly rich patch of clover covered the forest floor like knotted carpet, I remember there was a road sign that reported the distance to San Francisco and one or two cars riding the ribbon of asphalt south. We drove on, through dappled sunlight and the late afternoon until we had to regain the main road to make camp.

If memory is indeed a golden sieve, then perhaps I was exhausted despite the excitement, but rather than fatigue I remember leaving the Avenue of the Giants filled with elation and wonder. I didn't know we were about to find an idyllic and utterly abandoned beach filled with driftwood and elk and fog. Nor did I anticipate the spectacular shape our hikes through the coastal redwood forests would take. And even if I did, the specifics, the 20/20 vision of hindsight has wiped whatever expectations I had from my mind. Instead I'm left with this collection of photographs that follow, breadcrumbs that trace a path I hope to re-blaze with Val, Oliver and whoever might follow in the years to come.

In 2014 international media attention arose before. [8] [9] [10] Some publications called it the greatest work of art in the world "(a claim that is probably not true) [10] or "the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam '. Arno Coenen has realized work in collaboration with a team of six specialists. [10]

JURY DISTINCTION FOR CATEGORY 1. OBJECT OF STUDY

This supercomputing simulation shows how cerebrospinal fluid streams around the optic nerve (the latter passes through the centre of the “donut” but has been removed for clarity). The flow is visualised by streamlines coloured logarithmically according to their speed. The cerebrospinal fluid flows from the brain to the optic nerve, supplying it with nutrients and removing toxic metabolites. The subarachnoid space in which it flows features complex structures at different scales, creating patterns with numerous bifurcations and junctions. An impaired flow plays a central role in eye pathologies such as papilledema and certain types of glaucoma.

The geometry of the structure was captured with synchrotron-radiation microtomography of a human optic nerve at the Paul Scherrer Institute; it consists of more than two terabytes of data. The flow field was computed with very accurate Fourier-based schemes on the Helvetios supercomputer at EPFL.

Comment of the jury │ The image, striking for its fascinating and somehow alien aesthetic, shows the power of digital modelling in opening up new perspectives on nature and biology. It unveils the inner world of the vision system and its complex organic reality. The viewer contemplates what is currently occurring in their own body, possibly getting lost in the labyrinth-like intricacies of unknown current lines.

Hello Flickr! I'm liking the new layout of the site but I'm still familiarizing! :D I'm really happy they gave us 1 terabyte of photos!! Woooo!

I terribly miss my contacts! I miss looking at your photos! I'll try my best to go to my fave photostreams after the weekend. :D

Anyway, I started taking some short photography courses over the summer until now to broaden my knowledge and learn new styles and tricks. I've learned a lot on studio lighting and more of outdoor portraiture. And this is one of my favorite tricks that I've learned! (From one of the coolest instructor/photographer in the existence. :P) It's quite editorial, far from my style but I'm really starting to like it! We've tackled a lot of concepts that I thought to myself "These are definitely portfolio quality!!" Because, let's face it my once so-called portfolio sucked. XD HAHAHA! I will post more when I have more time on my laptop, and will also work on that better portfolio. Lol.

An international collaboration presents paradigm-shifting observations of the gargantuan black hole at the heart of distant galaxy Messier 87

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) — a planet-scale array of eight ground-based radio telescopes forged through international collaboration — was designed to capture images of a black hole. Today, in coordinated press conferences across the globe, EHT researchers reveal that they have succeeded, unveiling the first direct visual evidence of a supermassive black hole and its shadow.

This breakthrough was announced today in a series of six papers published in a special issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The image reveals the black hole at the center of Messier 87 [1], a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. This black hole resides 55 million light-years from Earth and has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun [2].

The EHT links telescopes around the globe to form an Earth-sized virtual telescope with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution [3]. The EHT is the result of years of international collaboration, and offers scientists a new way to study the most extreme objects in the Universe predicted by Einstein’s general relativity during the centennial year of the historic experiment that first confirmed the theory [4].

"We have taken the first picture of a black hole," said EHT project director Sheperd S. Doeleman of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. "This is an extraordinary scientific feat accomplished by a team of more than 200 researchers."

Black holes are extraordinary cosmic objects with enormous masses but extremely compact sizes. The presence of these objects affects their environment in extreme ways, warping spacetime and super-heating any surrounding material.

"If immersed in a bright region, like a disc of glowing gas, we expect a black hole to create a dark region similar to a shadow — something predicted by Einstein’s general relativity that we’ve never seen before, explained chair of the EHT Science Council Heino Falcke of Radboud University, the Netherlands. "This shadow, caused by the gravitational bending and capture of light by the event horizon, reveals a lot about the nature of these fascinating objects and allowed us to measure the enormous mass of M87’s black hole."

Multiple calibration and imaging methods have revealed a ring-like structure with a dark central region — the black hole’s shadow — that persisted over multiple independent EHT observations.

"Once we were sure we had imaged the shadow, we could compare our observations to extensive computer models that include the physics of warped space, superheated matter and strong magnetic fields. Many of the features of the observed image match our theoretical understanding surprisingly well," remarks Paul T.P. Ho, EHT Board member and Director of the East Asian Observatory [5]. "This makes us confident about the interpretation of our observations, including our estimation of the black hole’s mass."

Creating the EHT was a formidable challenge which required upgrading and connecting a worldwide network of eight pre-existing telescopes deployed at a variety of challenging high-altitude sites. These locations included volcanoes in Hawai`i and Mexico, mountains in Arizona and the Spanish Sierra Nevada, the Chilean Atacama Desert, and Antarctica.

The EHT observations use a technique called very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) which synchronises telescope facilities around the world and exploits the rotation of our planet to form one huge, Earth-size telescope observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. VLBI allows the EHT to achieve an angular resolution of 20 micro-arcseconds — enough to read a newspaper in New York from a sidewalk café in Paris [6].

The telescopes contributing to this result were ALMA, APEX, the IRAM 30-meter telescope, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano, the Submillimeter Array, the Submillimeter Telescope, and the South Pole Telescope [7]. Petabytes of raw data from the telescopes were combined by highly specialised supercomputers hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and MIT Haystack Observatory.

The construction of the EHT and the observations announced today represent the culmination of decades of observational, technical, and theoretical work. This example of global teamwork required close collaboration by researchers from around the world. Thirteen partner institutions worked together to create the EHT, using both pre-existing infrastructure and support from a variety of agencies. Key funding was provided by the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the EU's European Research Council (ERC), and funding agencies in East Asia.

"We have achieved something presumed to be impossible just a generation ago," concluded Doeleman. "Breakthroughs in technology, connections between the world's best radio observatories, and innovative algorithms all came together to open an entirely new window on black holes and the event horizon."

Notes

[1] The shadow of a black hole is the closest we can come to an image of the black hole itself, a completely dark object from which light cannot escape. The black hole’s boundary — the event horizon from which the EHT takes its name — is around 2.5 times smaller than the shadow it casts and measures just under 40 billion km across.

[2] Supermassive black holes are relatively tiny astronomical objects — which has made them impossible to directly observe until now. As a black hole’s size is proportional to its mass, the more massive a black hole, the larger the shadow. Thanks to its enormous mass and relative proximity, M87’s black hole was predicted to be one of the largest viewable from Earth — making it a perfect target for the EHT.

[3] Although the telescopes are not physically connected, they are able to synchronize their recorded data with atomic clocks — hydrogen masers — which precisely time their observations. These observations were collected at a wavelength of 1.3 mm during a 2017 global campaign. Each telescope of the EHT produced enormous amounts of data — roughly 350 terabytes per day — which was stored on high-performance helium-filled hard drives. These data were flown to highly specialised supercomputers — known as correlators — at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and MIT Haystack Observatory to be combined. They were then painstakingly converted into an image using novel computational tools developed by the collaboration.

[4] 100 years ago, two expeditions set out for the island of Príncipe off the coast of Africa and Sobra in Brazil to observe the 1919 solar eclipse, with the goal of testing general relativity by seeing if starlight would be bent around the limb of the sun, as predicted by Einstein. In an echo of those observations, the EHT has sent team members to some of the world's highest and isolated radio facilities to once again test our understanding of gravity.

[5] The East Asian Observatory (EAO) partner on the EHT project represents the participation of many regions in Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Indonesia.

[6] Future EHT observations will see substantially increased sensitivity with the participation of the IRAM NOEMA Observatory, the Greenland Telescope and the Kitt Peak Telescope.

[7] ALMA is a partnership of the European Southern Observatory (ESO; Europe, representing its member states), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan, together with the National Research Council (Canada), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST; Taiwan), Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA; Taiwan), and Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI; Republic of Korea), in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. APEX is operated by ESO, the 30-meter telescope is operated by IRAM (the IRAM Partner Organizations are MPG (Germany), CNRS (France) and IGN (Spain)), the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope is operated by the EAO, the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano is operated by INAOE and UMass, the Submillimeter Array is operated by SAO and ASIAA and the Submillimeter Telescope is operated by the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). The South Pole Telescope is operated by the University of Chicago with specialized EHT instrumentation provided by the University of Arizona.

The EHT collaboration involves more than 200 researchers from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. The international collaboration is working to capture the most detailed black hole images ever by creating a virtual Earth-sized telescope. Supported by considerable international investment, the EHT links existing telescopes using novel systems — creating a fundamentally new instrument with the highest angular resolving power that has yet been achieved.

The individual telescopes involved are; ALMA, APEX, the IRAM 30-meter Telescope, the IRAM NOEMA Observatory, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano (LMT), the Submillimeter Array (SMA), the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT), the South Pole Telescope (SPT), the Kitt Peak Telescope, and the Greenland Telescope (GLT).

The EHT collaboration consists of 13 stakeholder institutes; the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the University of Arizona, the University of Chicago, the East Asian Observatory, Goethe-Universitaet Frankfurt, Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique, Large Millimeter Telescope, Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, MIT Haystack Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Radboud University and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
