2017 NSF CAREER: Three-Dimensional Unsteady Flow Interactions in Flocks and Schools

 

Keith Moored has specific interests in unsteady fluid mechanics, biological flying and swimming, vortex dynamics, fluid instability, multiple-body fluid interactions/boundary interactions, cell motility, active structures, tensegrity structures and cellular mechanics. He also has related interests in marine hydrokinetic and wind turbines. The approaches Moored uses are a combined program of theory, computations and experiments.

 

Moored's project focuses on extending our knowledge of the fluid dynamic interactions that occur in animal collectives: flocks, schools and swarms. The overarching research goal of the program is to understand the flow mechanisms that occur among unsteady, three-dimensional interacting bodies in complex arrangements. This will help scientists determine the sensitivity of biological networks in relation to overfishing, loss of habitat and the climate change.

The flexeez octahedron is topologically the same as the flexeez cube since both are Mrs. Stott's expansions of the proper version of either. This "octahedron" was built by following the undip code uunnddpp using flexeez in the squat orientation. The same code describes the "cube" when the flexeez are used in the long orientation.

Tensegrity is a structural-relationship principle in which structural shape is guaranteed by the finitely closed, comprehensively continuous, tensional behaviors of the system and not by the discontinuous and exclusively local compression member behaviors. Tensegrity provides the ability to yield increasingly without ultimately breaking or coming asunder" This system seems to be an apt metaphor for the relationship of citizens to law enforcement.

 

While steel rods are used to work through the composition designs of these works, the final works may employ wires connections to emphasize the tensional relationship of the elements.

As part of our Thursday Photography Group we walked across the Kurilpa Bridge - on of my favorite bridges, as the masts remind me of the masts of sailing ships that would have been there in the days of the city's settlement.

 

The Kurilpa Bridge, originally named the Tank Street Bridge, is a pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Kurilpa Point to Tank Street in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In 2011, the bridge was judged the winner of World Transport Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival.

 

The bridge provides access for the public connecting two central areas of Brisbane - from the central business district to the cultural hub where the Museum of Modern Art is located. The bridge features two large viewing and relaxation platforms, two rest areas, and a continuous all-weather canopy for the entire length of the bridge. The canopy is supported by a secondary tensegrity structure.

 

Kurilpa Bridge is the world's largest hybrid tensegrity bridge. Only the horizontal spars conform to tensegrity principles, using a multiple-mast, cable-stay structure. The Kurilpa Bridge utilises renowned architect, Richard Buckminster Fuller's principle of tensegrity producing a synergy between balanced tension and compression components to create a light structure that is incredibly strong.

Kenneth Snelson's sculptures have done more to popularize the concept of tensegrity than anyone's. His large scale constructs show how compression members can provide rigidity while remaining separate, not touching one another, held in stasis only by means of tensed wires. By means of discontinuous compression and continuous tension, Snelson's multi-story towers and large scale amorphous exoskeletons of wire and steel, give dramatic, visible expression to the idea that tension and compression are the eternally complementary elements in any structure, and that great economy in materials may be achieved through strategies which rely on tension primarily, compression secondarily

Buckminster Fuller Tensegrity at the Phoenix Burton Barr Library

Hey all! Saw this #tensegrity build doing the rounds on LEGO social media at the moment. Thought I would give it a crack and add my own spin to it. Credit to @jasonallemann for the original build that kicked this all off. -Greg

Located 1 Undersharft EC3A6HX this sculpture is entitled Crocodulius Philodendrus by Nancy Rubins

 

I quote the booklet -

 

"As part of her series Diversifolia– which in the scientific names of plants indicates a single species possessed with a considerable variety of leaf, Crocodylius Philodendrus employs clusters of bouquet like arrangements comprised out of a variety of animal forms that explode into space in all directions. Her calculated compositions employ a structural property called “tensegrity,” wherein individual parts are arranged in balanced compression and secured with tensile cables, that galvanizes the aluminium crocodiles, hogs and deer, cast iron tortoises, and bronze zebras into purely formal, abstract components as they propel into space due to their aggregate momentum. Circumnavigating her towering assemblage reveals the transformation of found objects and industrial refuse into expertly orchestrated abstractions that are fluid and rhizomatic in nature."

I used fireline to bead weave this piece..

The base of table rotate around axis, and make table high and low (coffee).

Balloons are linked by rubber bands made by cutting 4 mm slices across Qualatex 321Q balloons. There are two linked rubber bands across each bow width.
