I managed to get out early on the latest in a series of misty mornings characterised by a temperature inversion in the Derwent Valley (and, indeed, across a much wider area). I took this shortly after sunrise with mist starting to roll in to envelop Over Owler Tor.

A period of warm temperatures caused ice melt on the small clearing. Assesses yesterday with warm temperatures as much as 8 yesterday. Today -1 temperatures and intermittent snow storm.

The afternoon temperatures were in the low double digits Fahrenheit one day last month when I spotted this female mallard splashing and thrashing around in an area of open water at a local forest preserve.

At first, I couldn’t figure out what she was doing. But as I looked more closely, I could see that she had a coating of ice on her back that she was trying to get rid of. You can see the ice if you look closely here. After a couple of minutes of struggling--including multiple dives beneath the icy water surface--she finally got the ice to break up and fall off her back.

Maybe I haven’t been paying close enough attention, but I don’t recall seeing this situation and behavior before.

The temperature was below zero and the wind was adding to the chill factor. As I walked along the promenade two figures walked down onto the beach with their surfboards.

The South East coast of the UK is not renowned for being a good surfing coast, but occasionally the waves whip up and these two obviously thought it was worth swimming out and catching a wave or two.

This was the first boarder about to take the plunge, as the early morning sun illuminated the surface of the sea.

Unusually warm temperatures have led to a lack of snow and an overall theme of brown in the plant life, so a welcome sight of Metra MP36PH-3C #402 leading Rock Island District #401 is most needed. The classic Rock Island era searchlights at Robbins Illinois make it all the better.

Hair ice (also known as ice wool or frost beard) is a type of ice that forms on dead wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair. It is somewhat uncommon, and has been reported mostly at latitudes between 45 and 55°N in broadleaf forests. The meteorologist and discoverer of continental drift, Alfred Wegener, described hair ice on wet dead wood in 1918, assuming some specific fungi as the catalyst, a theory mostly confirmed by Gerhart Wagner and Christian Mätzler in 2005. In 2015, the fungus Exidiopsis effusa was identified as key to the formation of hair ice.

Formation

Hair ice forms on moist, rotting wood from broadleaf trees when temperatures are slightly under 0 °C (32 °F) and the air is humid. Each of the smooth, silky hairs has a diameter of about 0.02 mm and a length of up to 20 centimetres (7.9 in). The hairs are brittle, but take the shape of curls and waves. They can maintain their shape for hours and sometimes days. This long lifetime indicates that something is preventing the small ice crystals from recrystallizing into larger ones, since recrystallization normally occurs very quickly at temperatures near 0 °C.

The hairs appear to root at the mouth of wood rays (never on the bark), and their thickness is similar to the diameter of the wood ray channels. A piece of wood that produces hair ice once may continue to produce it over several years.

In 2015, German and Swiss scientists identified the fungus Exidiopsis effusa as key to the formation of hair ice. The fungus was found on every hair ice sample examined by the researchers, and disabling the fungus with fungicide or hot water prevented hair ice formation.[1] The fungus shapes the ice into fine hairs through an uncertain mechanism and likely stabilizes it by providing a recrystallization inhibitor similar to antifreeze proteins.

With temperatures above 100 degrees, Verde Canyon Railroad's tourist train crosses the bridge at mile 34.7 as it slowly journeys from Clarksville to Perkinsville, Arizona. The scenic round trip takes about four hours, but it's well worth the effort. The center span of this bridge is the old turntable from Prescott. On June 3, 2026, the 21-car train is led by VCR GP7 2164 (ex-Santa Fe) and VCR FP7 1512 (ex-Alaska Railroad).

The VCR, which extends from Drake on BNSF's Phoenix line to Clarksville, was formerly Santa Fe's Clarksville District. In addition to its passenger train, the VCR hauls freight between Drake and Clarksville.

Temperatures were rising already as this empty phosphate train passed us, hauled by a Japanese Hitachi loocomotive.

Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery, Woodbridge, 13,5%

This Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery is absolutely gorgeous! At a temperature of 20 degrees, the wine is “drinkable”, with very soft tannins, a slight flavor of currants and other dark berries. The acidity is minimal, the wine is light and goes well with boiled meat. For its almost budget price of 500 hryvnia, the wine is beyond praise. I regret that I only bought two bottles at the time.

The color is red with a ruby tint. The aroma has tones of red fruits and spices. Cherry and spices are felt in the taste. The aftertaste is long and velvety, with a pleasant tartness of ripe bird cherry berries.

It is dry with very small acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, it is well-balanced and had a moderate length finish.

Nowadays, Napa Valley has become a US wine legend. Clay soils and an excellent drainage system allow for the creation of some of the most interesting and profound wines in the world. It was the wines from Napa Valley that once glorified the Mondavi company and Robert Mondavi himself.

Masked boobies are spectacular divers. They plunge almost vertically at high speed from a depth of 12 - 100 m, at least 2 to 3 m into the sea.

The prey is swallowed underwater.

Climate change is leading to a rise in water temperatures, which in turn is causing corals to die. Especially as their habitat, the coral reefs, is under severe pressure.

Without corals, there is no habitat for the masked booby and many other sea creatures. Due to overfishing, the birds have to fly further + longer to find enough food, which is very exhausting and leads to a higher mortality rate.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The temperature has been well above freezing in recent days, and it’s been raining. The snow is melting fast.

This sea-smoky landscape was photographed about half an hour before sunset on the Gulf of Finland coast in Helsinki. In the afternoon, the temperature was about -5°C and sea smoke was forming from the open sea in varying degrees. When the sun set, the island and the small cottage at its tip were completely covered in sea smoke. The temperature quickly dropped to -10 ° C after sunset (A7R7139-4e).

It looks a bit overcast but the temperature was quite mild on this walk to the seafront with Tim. I was on a mission to look for stones to bring home and paint - shhh, I know it's not really allowed, but I don't think it would be obvious there are some missing! As it turned out, most of them were too small but I brought a few home from further up the beach!

Here you can see South Parade Pier and a couple of deckchairs - quite a rare sight on our beach despite them being manufactured by a company called 'Southsea Deckchairs', whose warehouse is next door to the one Tim works in!!

Yesterday, our temperatures dropped dramatically, going down to minus 1 overnight and around 4 degrees during the day. All the cats have taken to sleeping near radiators, buried under duvets or in front of the open fire which we lit for the first time yesterday. Thankfully we have missed the snow that some of the rest of the UK has had and luckily, at the weekend, the temperatures are due to rise again.

For our Fahrenheit friends that is 30.2 at night and 39.2 during the day

Water level decreased slowly for some days of very low temperature, so the river left some ice on the tree.

This is an image from a very cold morning where temperatures were about -5 and was able to catch sunrise with this hoar frost tree. There is nothing better then the combination of a cold morning, mist, and a sunrise in the winter. Wow - the air was crisp and so clear ! But the biggest advantage was having the park to yourself the way nature was intended !

Actually, it is not really a winter, it is a quackwinter, but we now have two days of snow again and this was the view from my living room in Odijk.

The temperature here is now + 2.5° Celsius, so tomorrow the white will be gone again.

It's a day for staying indoors. The wind is howling and the temperatures are back in the -40c range. My son and I spent the afternoon making sugar cookies. We seem to have a lot of animal-shaped cookies ... I couldn't find the Christmas cookie cutters, so we settled on our animal cutouts. The icing was just made and I've left adding colour to my son. I suspect we'll have some pretty brightly-coloured cookies by the end of the day.

This is my favourite Santa ornament - a small carved and hand-painted Santa ... I wish the focus was better, but I love the background colours. Christmas is nearly here ... life is good!!! Thanks to all my Flickr friends for being there!!

Temperatures below zero were present almost every day during my visit to the famous Kirkjufell volcano. The waterfalls and the riverbed were practically frozen. In spite of the freezing temperatures, I was able to enjoy this beautiful sunset and take this 12-photo panorama in this iconic place in Iceland. A perfect combination for the land of ice and fire as Iceland is actually well-known
